Brief introduction to the Institute of Process

Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences

IPE strive to lead the forefront of process engineering and create a
new era of process industry. On October 1st, 1958, to meet the urgent
national demands for developing iron and steel smelting, a large number
of world-famous scientists and scholars including Professors Yap Chu-
Phay, Mooson Kwauk, and Chen Jiayong was recruited and the Institute of
Chemical Metallurgy (ICM) was founded under the leadership of the
Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). Followed by its birth, the institute
immediately established the discipline of chemical metallurgy, and
proposed the “Three-High-Theory” for blast furnace intensity smelting,
which successfully led to the doubling of national iron output; it then
initiated the oxygen top-blown converter steelmaking technology that
enhanced the efficiency of steelmaking by more than twenty times; it also
developed subsequently an integrated technology for resources utilization
and set up leading-edge research in particuology and computer chemistry.
With the progression of times, the ICM’s research fields have been
broadened to cover disciplines such as energy, resources, environment,
materials and biotechnology. Several national R&D platforms were
therefore set up including the State Key Laboratory of Biochemical
Engineering, the National Engineering Research Center for Biochemical
Technology in Beijing, the State Key Laboratory of Multiphase Complex
Systems, the National Engineering Laboratory for Hydrometallurgical
Cleaner Production Technology, and the Key Laboratory of Green Process
and Engineering.
Stepping into the 21st century, guided by Academicians Li Jinghai,
Zhang Yi, Li Hongzhong and other scientists, the institute started to focus
on research programs specifically in process engineering as a national
leader. By taking time-space multi-scale structure as the core principle, and
1
carrying out systematic research in four dimensional levels, the institute
made breakthroughs in understanding and solving common and crucial
scientific issues, and laid solid foundation for developing and deepening
process engineering discipline, culminating the renaming of ICM to
Institute of Process Engineering (IPE) in 2001.
The current director is Prof. Zhang Suojiang, a CAS academician. In
historical order, the directors of IPE and ICM were Prof. Chuphay Yap,
CAS academician and founder of ICM; Prof. Mooson Kwauk, CAS
academician; Prof. Xu Zhihong; Prof. Xie Yusheng; Prof. Li Jinghai, CAS
academician and Prof. Liu Huizhou.
Currently, IPE is implementing the “One-Three-Five” Strategic
Planning, focusing on large-scale clean conversion and high-efficiency
utilization of energy and resources, promoting process industry to upgrade
and modernize towards green, high efficiency, intelligence and high-value
adding. IPE is continuously deepening its reform and enforcing the Talents
Highland Program. In order to concentrate human resources on achieving
major innovation breakthroughs, the institute has changed its
administration structure from isolated project groups to innovation teams
belonging to different research departments. Up till now, IPE has built an
integrated development platform centering on the Zhongguancun new park
supplemented by Langfang branch and Zhengzhou branch, which is termed
as“One Institute with Two Wings”, thus creating a R&D mode of
“foundation–application–industrialization”.
IPE inaugurated the meso-scale science and built one of the earliest
virtual process engineering platforms in the world. It also proposed the
non-conventional sub-molten salt medium theory and developed new
techniques for gas-solid fluidization reactors, which have been applied to
clean refining of strategic mineral resources in China, resulting in 30%
increase in mineral utilization and 20% reduction in energy consumption.
2
The ionic liquids technology has been applied in the production of basic
chemical raw materials, which completely eliminates the use of highly
toxic and corrosive acids and alkalis, reducing wastewater discharge by
more than 70%. The new method for design and large-scale preparation of
functional powder materials has been widely used in many areas such as
national defense, electric power, and chemical industry and so on.
Magnetic separation and other green process technologies have been
developed. The industrialization of straw refining for fuels and chemicals
greatly reduces the production cost. The development of a series of
uniform-sized, biochemical chromatography medium, with nano/micro
structure and that of the new membrane reaction equipment have broken
the monopolization of foreign technology in China. The industrialized
technologies of harmless treatment of coking wastewater and industrial
organic pollutants have been extensively adopted. The breakthrough in
coal pyrolysis and decoupling combustion technology has reduced NOx
emissions by more than 30%, which solves the combustion pollution
problem of small- and medium-sized boilers.
In the last decade, IPE has won four international awards and thirteen
national awards, which includes the National Natural Science Awards, the
National Technology Invention Awards, and the National Science and
Technology Progress Awards; meanwhile, it published more than 5000
SCI/EI papers and was awarded over 1300 patents. The institute sponsors
four academic journals: The Chinese Journal of Process Engineering,
Particuology, Green Energy & Environment, and Computer and Applied
Chemistry as well. In addition, the Chinese Society of Particuology, a top-
ranked professional organization, is affiliated to IPE. In 2014, the CAS
international assessment committee evaluated the institute and came to the
conclusion that IPE had reached international level for all of its research
areas examined, and some of the areas had been in a leading position in the
3
world.
IPE has a high-level scientific research team of more than 1700 staff.
Among them, there are five CAS and CAE members, 28 CAS Hundred
Talents winners, 13 State Outstanding Youth Fund winners and more than
400 professors and senior researchers. At present, there are more than 500
students enrolled in Ph.D. and master programs.
In recent years, IPE has established close relationship with world class
universities and institutions such as Harvard University, Cambridge
University and Max Planck Society, for both academic exchange and
graduate student training . IPE also collaborates with world top 500
enterprises such as British Petroleum, ToTAL and BASF. The Third World
Academy of Sciences Center of Excellence for Green Technology also
finds its home at the institute. Last but not least, our foreign collaborators,
Professor Lothar Hans Reh and Professor Jan-Christer Janson both won the
China International Science and Technology Cooperation Award.
To answer the calls of the modern era, IPE takes the social
responsibility bravely and seriously. It pays great attention to the
construction of an innovative culture with the characteristic of process
engineering, and carries out various staff activities to promote the
harmonious development of the institute. We would never forget our
original mission, and will be constantly committed to create continuous
values for the sustainable growth of mankind.
