Please define Measurements, Testing, Assessment, and Evaluation

1. (MEASUREMENT)
“Measurement is the process of quantifying or assigning a number to a
performance or trait.” (Russell &Airasian, 2012, p.11)

“Measurement is the process of quantifying the observed performance of

classroom learners.”(Brown &Abeywickrama, 2010, p.4)

Summary:
“Measurement is the process of quantifying or assigning a number to the
observed performance or trait of classroom learners.” (Brown &
Abeywickrama, 2010, p.4; Russell & Airasian, 2012, p.11)

2. (TESTING)
“Testing is a formal assessment.” (Harris & McCann’s, 1994:4)

“A test is a formal, systematic procedure used to gather information about

students’ achievement or other cognitive skills.” (Russel & Airrasian,
2012:11)

“A test is a method of measuring person’s ability, knowledge, or

performance in a given domain.” (Brown & Abeywickrama, 2010:3)

Summary:
“A test is a formal, systematic method of gathering information about
person’s ability, knowledge, performance, and other cognitive skills in a
given domain.” (Harris & McCann’s, 1994:4; Russel & Airrasian, 2012:11;
Brown & Abeywickrama, 2010:3)

3. (ASSESSMENT)
“Assessment is a process of collecting, synthesizing and interpreting
information in order to make a decision.” (Russell & Airasian, 2012:10).

“Assessment is measuring the performance of our students and the progress

they make, diagnosing the problems they have and providing our learners
with useful feedback.” (Harris & McCann, 1994: 2).
According to Mousavi in Brown & Abeywickrama (2010), assessment is
“appraising” or “estimating” the level or magnitude of some attitude of a
person through wide range of methodological techniques.

Summary:
“Assessment is collecting, synthesizing and interpreting students’
performance and the progress they make, diagnosing the problem they have,
and providing them with useful feedback through wide range of
methodological techniques.”

4. (EVALUATION)
“Evaluation is the act of using the result of a test (or the assessment
procedure) for decision making.” According to (Bachman, 1990, pp. 22-23)
in (Brown & Abeywickrama, 2010, p.5)

“Evaluation is about looking at all the factors that influence learning process
such as syllabus, objectives, course design, materials, methodology, teacher
performance, and assessment.” (Haris & McCann, 1994, p.2)

“Evaluation is the process of making judgement about what is good or

desirable.”(Russel & Airasian, 2012, p.11)

Summary:
“Evaluation is the act of making judgement of the student’s performance in
learning process by looking at several factors such as syllabus, objectives,
course design, materials, methodology, teacher performance, and
assessment.” (Brown & Abeywickrama, 2010, p.5; Haris & McCann, 1994,
p.2; Russel & Airasian, 2012, p.11)
