My essay will attempt to answer the question of how college debt affects future life

choices of students. I want to learn how people can get out of this problem. Also, how to not get

into this problem in the first place. Another thing I want to know is what can happen if college

debt makes you change your future dreams.

Barbecho, Ashley. Personal interview. 24 October 2019.

This interview was conducted on October 24 2019 by Ashley Barbecho. After college

and graduating she had college debt. She did not know what do and asked her parents to help her

with it. She had so many plans for her future and becoming a nurse. She was excited for it but in

an instance she did not know she had so much to pay off her debt. Her whole dreams and future

had to change because she had to pay it all off. She had to get more than one job and was helped

with her family. She did not know that this situation could happen to her but it indeed did. Over

the years she had to pay it and what she wanted to do she could not and did not have as much of

freedom to do whatever. She was struggling in a time of difficult times she thought everything

would change but after all this she overcame it and paid all of it off.

Caldwell, Miriam. “4 ways student loans are hurting you.” The balance, 25 June 2019,

https://www.thebalance.com/ways-your-student-loans-hurt-you-4026671

This article called “4 ways student loans are hurting you.” by Miriam Caldwell published

June of 2019. This talk about many ways loans are destroying people. It also talks about how it
lowers the ability to take risks. It also talks about if people were saving up for retirement they

would probably end up using that money to pay their student loans. Most people have to buy a

house later because they have a lot of debt to pay off. Being in student debt so many people have

to change so many things them had in plan and start from the start. Most people do not notice

that debt is a big deal until they become in the same situation. Also if people have a once in a life

time opportunity they would have to pass on it because of debt and how much they have to pay.

Hsu, Hua. “Student debt is transforming the American family.” The New Yorker, 9

September 2019, https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2019/09/09/student-debt-is-

transforming-the-american-family

This article called “Student debt is transforming the American family.” by Hua Hsu

published in September 2019. It talks about how the debt is changing the American life and is

changing how they are supposed to live. Talks about how over the year’s student debt has

increased and costs so much more. Back then the debt were not so much to pay but since people

do not see what could happen it leads to more debt. In this article there are different stories of

several people who are in debt or were. They talk about how you can overcome it and not get in

the situation in the first place. They talk about how they got in the problem and what changed in

their future.

Kirby, Carrie. “How Student Loan Debt Can Derail Your Future.” Wise bread, 25 July

2018, https://www.wisebread.com/how-student-loan-debt-can-derail-your-future

According to the article “How Student Loan Debt Can Derail Your Future.” by Kirby

Carrie published July 2018. This mainly talks about how student debt can take your somewhere

else where your future is not. It also talks about not having as much free time because the people

are too busy trying to pay their debt and do not have enough time to follow their dreams. It also
talks about that if you borrowed money a lot of people do not realize that they have to pay their

debt and interest so more money to pay. Debt can lead to different choices that they have to

make and different dreams. So many people around the world are struggling with this and most

people do not know what they will have to do with all the debt. People that borrow money will

eventually have to pay more than their debt depending on the person they are borrowing from.

Myers lll, Walter. “The effect of student loans on your future: What to know before

applying for financial aid.” NBCnews.com, 2 January 2019,

your-future-no-ncna944971

This article called “The effect of student loans on your future: What to know before

applying for financial aid.” by Walter lll Myers published on January 2019. This talks about how

student debt can change your job professions on what you wanted to be. So many people have to

do something they might not want to work just to pay their debts without getting more in debt. A

lot of people change their dreams and try to pay their debts. Most people do not notice that

student loan is something that should be something that everyone is aware of. It also talks about

many effects of loans that can become bad and get you in debt. There is a greater percentage now

than before people more people want loans to help them with costs but later have to pay them.

Sometimes they forget about it until they are reminded how much they need to pay it off.

Schatz, Brian, Sen. “The student debt crisis threatens the American way of life.

Washington can’t keep ignoring it.” NBCnews.com, 29 March 2018,

According to the article “The student debt crisis threatens the American way of life.

Washington can’t keep ignoring it.” by Sen Brian Schatz published in 2018. This article talks

about college students struggling to pursue their dreams with college debt. Over the years student

debt has doubled and made futures change then what they wanted to do before. College debt has

made people stop following their dreams and making them pay for their debt. The debt is also

threatening Congress to remain inactive. Every generation is becoming and or being affected to

this no matter if you’re rich or not. “If this bill became law today, 32 states would immediately

be able to provide debt-free college to all Pell Grant students in their states.” This means that if

the states agreed and passed this bill would have had student be in no debt or less debt then

having so much debt.
