7.What is ISM, Why implemented

 Short form of International Safety Management Code, initiated by IMO

 Part of SOLAS (Chapter 9)
 Majority of accidents and injury are caused by human error & poor management
 ISM is organized mainly to reduce this error
 ISM is meant for standard of safety & operation of ships and for pollution prevention ISM will
become mandatory for all vessels on 1 JULY 2002

 13.CERTIFICATION AND VERIFICATION

9.Where On Board a Ship would you find Information on the Carriage of Hazardous Substances?

 Information on the Carriage of Hazardous Substances would be found in the IMDG

(International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code), which would normally be found on the Bridge.

10.What is Standard Fire Test?

 Test a specimen under fire. It is exposed to test furnace and results recorded and compared to
standard graph of time vs. temp.
 Specimen shall be as similar as possible to intended construction
 Size of specimen minimum surface 4.65 m² and height 2.44 m
 Standard time temperature curve is a smooth curve which :-
 at the first 5 min : 556°C
10 min : 659°C
15 min : 718°C
30 min : 821°C
60 min : 925°C

11.Explain classes of fire door.

Class A division

 Steel constructed or equivalent material

 Suitable stiffenedConstructed to prevent passage of smoke or flame to the end of one hour
standard fire test
 Insulated with approved non combustible material, that the average temp. of unexposed side
shall not be more than 139°C above original temp nor will be temp at any point raise more than
180°C above original temp within time listed below:
 Class A 60 60 min
A 30 30 min
A 15 15 min
A0 0 min

Class B division
 Constructed so that capable of preventing passage of smoke/flame at end of first half an hour
standard fire test
 Insulated so that average temp, on unexposed side shall not be more than 139°C and nor will be
temp. at any point more than 225°C above original temp. within time listed below :-
 Class B 15 15 min
Class B 0 0 min

Class C division

 Constructed by approved non combustible material

 no need to meet any requirement

12.What are the rules concerning pumping out bilges ?

According to MARPOL 73/78 Reg. 9, table 1 & 2,

 No pumping out of bilges in port

 No bilges can be pumped out in special area such as Persian Gulf, Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea,
Red sea, Baltic Sea unless following conditions are justified :-
 Vessel proceeding en route
 Oil content of effluent without dilution is less than 15 ppm
 In operation an oil filtering equipment with oil monitoring , device which gives alarm and auto
stop when oil content is 15 ppm and above

For tanker

 Discharge of oil or oily mixture shall be prohibited unless followings are satisfied:
 Vessel proceeding en route
 Vessel is not in special area
 Vessel is more than 50 Nm from nearest land
 Instantaneous rate of discharge of oil content does not 30 litres per nautical mile
 Total quantity of oil discharge to sea does not exceed 1/15000 of total quantity of cargo
(include the residue, for existing tankers)
 Total quantity of oil discharge to sea does not exceed 1/30000 of total quantity of cargo
(include the residue for new ship)

13.What are the oil record book entries?

 Ballast & cleaning of FO tanks

 Discharge of cleaning water or ballast water from FO tank
 Collection & discharging of oil residues (sludge)
 Condition of oil monitoring & control equipment
 Automatic discharge overboard or disposal of bilge water from machinery space
 Non auto discharge or disposal of bilge water from machinery space
 FO & LO bunkering
 Accidental discharge overboard
 Additional operation procedures & general remarks

14.What is life boat engine regulation?

 All lifeboat shall be powered by compression ignition engine

 The engine shall be provided with manual starting or power starting system with 2 independent
rechargeable energy source
 Engine shall be capable of operating more than 5 min. after starting from cold with lifeboat out
of water
 Engine shall be capable of operating when lifeboat is flooded up to centerline of crankshaft
 Propeller shafting shall be so arranged that propeller can be disengaged from engine. Also,
provision shall be made for ahead & astern propulsion
 Exhaust pipe shall be arranged so as to prevent water from entering during engine operation
 Speed of lifeboat when proceeding ahead in calm water, carrying full capacity of persons &
equipment with engine operating shall be at least 6 knots. If the boat is pulling a 25 person & a
life raft, at least 2 knots
 Engine shall be enclosed in a fire retardant casing
 Means shall be provided for recharging all engine starting, radio & search light
 Water resistant instruction for engine starting & operation shall be posted in lifeboat near the
engine

15. What is Emergency fire pump regulation?

 Must not same compartment with main fire p/p

 Starting arrangement shall be outside, independent of space containing main fire p/p
 Must have own sea suction, own overboard & cables placed outside engine room
 Pump must be located in such a way that it can provide efficient pumping at lightest draft
 If p/p is located more than 2 m above lightest load line, means of priming shall be provided
 P/p shouldn't be placed more than l0 m above lightest draft
 Arrangement - permit isolation of fire main from machinery space
