Tools ABS uses to support open

data

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS)

• Legislated authority to collect statistical information

• Legislated requirement to publish information, and to ensure that


information is published in a manner that is unlikely to identify any
person or organisation

• Currently around 2.7 million webpages

¾ Allows users to build their own tables from full data sets
¾ Menu driven, with mapping and charting functionality

− 2006 & 2011 Census (Free version!)
− Growing range of social surveys

• Confidentialised Unit Record Files (manual process)

via remote access (batch process)
