Description
Social science is a category of academic disciplines, concerned with society and the
relationships among individuals within a society. Social science as a whole has many
branches
WHAT ARE THE SOCIAL SCIENCE SUBJECTS?
A good definition is given by the European Science foundation – the social sciencesare
those subjects which examine and explain human beings. ... The major social sciences are
Anthropology, Archaeology, Economics, Geography, History, Law, Linguistics, Politics,
Psychology and Sociology.
WHAT ARE THE EXAMPLE OF SOCIAL SCIENCES?
Applied social sciences are those social science disciplines, professions and occupations which
seek to use basic social science research and theory to improve the daily life of communities,
organizations and persons.
WHAT APPLIED SOCIAL SCIENCES PRACTITIONERS DO
A social scientist would most likely conduct research in the social sciences, such
as sociology, demography, psychology, etc. An applied social science practitioner would
work directly with people and apply their knowledge of social science to their career.
HOW DID SOCIAL SCIENCES START?
The history of the social sciences has origin in the common stock of Western philosophy and
shares various precursors, but began most intentionally in the early 19th century with the
positivist philosophy of science. ... Around the start of the 20th century, Enlightenment
philosophy was challenged in various quarters.
“Social Science” is the entire area of scientific endeavor related to discovering facts (i.e. very
strong theories) about humans and other social animals; in this latter connection it is part of
a continuum from biology and ethology. As you can see, it is a very broad field that includes
ethology, anthropology, sociology, economics, psychology, linguistics, and several other
more specialized fields. Any “applied science” researches how the particular science can be
used in the real world for beneficial results. Thus, “applied social science” explores how the
notions of theorists and the findings of experimentalists in any of the social science fields
can be used in the day-to-day world. This is the realm of ethics and the sweet/scary
potential of such knowledge. And it is not a “pie in the sky” concern. Marketing, advertising,
and the legal system are principal users of this kind of knowledge. Those Russian hackers
who influenced the 2016 election? They were using social science principles to sway voters
en masse. So, too, the daily advertisers that you hear on radio, and see on TV or the social
media. Similar principles are used to make products, services, and values appealing to any
who may be influenced, whether it’s by “big pharma,” a government, or your local church.
