Oktibbeha County voters who
go to the polls Tuesday will decide
on a full ballot of state and county
races, everything from constable to
governor.
Polls will be open from 7 a.m. un-
til 7 p.m., with voters making their
choices in seven contested state-
wide races, one seat in the House of
Representatives and seven contest-
ed county races. Statewide races
include governor, lieutenant gov-
ernor, secretary of state, attorney
general and treasurer. Four of the
five seats on the board of supervi-
sors are being contested as well.
Deputy Circuit Clerk Sheryl
Elmore said 797 people had voted
by absentee ballot as of the end
of Saturday’s in-person absentee
voting. Mail-in absentee ballots
postmarked by 5 p.m. today should
push that number well beyond the
800 mark, Elmore said.
There are 20 polling places that
will be open in Oktibbeha County.
Voters who do not know their poll-
ing place can call the circuit clerk’s
office at 323-1356.

enny Hairston routinely finds
himself meeting people in the
most difficult circumstances
of their lives. Hairston, 51, is man-
ager of Century Hairston Funeral
Homes in Columbus and Starkville,
a third-generation family business.
“I’m sitting with families and
helping them cope with the loss of
a loved one,” Hairston said. “That’s
always difficult, but over the years,
it’s helped me communicate bet-
ter.”
Aside from his years at Rust Col-
lege, where he was a record-break-
ing track athlete, Hairston has
spent his life in the mortuary busi-
ness. All of those years of meeting
with grief-stricken families have
developed in him a highly refined
sense of empathy.
And it is away from his work
that Hairston has found a way
to make a difference in his com-
munity through his position as
chapter president of Omega Psi Phi
fraternity, which has 750 chapters
and thousands of members both
in colleges and, like Hairston, as
graduates.
“What young men know best
about Omega Psi Phi is stepping,”
Hairston said. “They all want to
learn to step.”

outlook.”

young men, who typically range in
age from 13 to 18.

JACKSON — No matter who
wins this year’s elections, Mis-
sissippi will have its biggest
turnover of state government
officials in a long time.
At least five of the eight
statewide offices will have new
occupants. Those are governor,
lieutenant governor, attorney
general, secretary of state and
treasurer.
That is a contrast to 2015,
when all eight statewide offi-
cials — the three above, plus
auditor, agriculture commis-
sioner and insurance commis-
sioner — were re-elected.
State law limits the governor
and lieutenant governor to two
terms each, and Republican
Gov. Phil Bryant is moving on
after a long career in state gov-
ernment.
Republican Lt. Gov. Tate
Reeves and Democratic At-
torney General Jim Hood are
competing to succeed Bryant
in the Governor’s Mansion. In
Tuesday’s election, they face
two candidates who have run
low-budget campaigns, inde-
pendent David Singletary and
the Constitution Party’s Bob
Hickingbottom.
State law also limits the lieu-
tenant governor to two terms,
so Reeves would be moving out
of that job even if he weren’t
running for governor. The lieu-
tenant governor’s race is be-
tween three-term Secretary of
State Delbert Hosemann, who’s

Lately I’ve spent a lot of time

driving back and forth along
Highway 82 and Highway 45
between Columbus, Starkville
and West Point. From West Point, Shannon Bardwell

82, on the crest of a hill I could see a fair distance to the
next rise. Along that stretch I counted 12 large trucks —
18 wheelers. It seemed like a lot of trucks for one short
stretch. After that I started noticing trucks on the high-
way.
There are a lot of trucks out there, which is a good sign
for the economy. There are new trucking service centers
also. I suspected it was possible the trucking industry was
increasing just from eye-balling the trucks. Naturally I
searched the internet for a few trucking facts.

said: “Impeachment
is not about punish-
ment. Impeachment
is about cleansing the office.
Impeachment is about restor-

Today, of course, Graham
has introduced a resolution
condemning the impeachment
inquiry on the risible grounds
that it denies “due process” to
the president.
In 1999, Rep. Nancy Pelosi
said: “What President Clinton
did was wrong. It is grounds for
embarrassment, not for im-
peachment.” The same was true
of Steny Hoyer, Peter DeFazio,
John Lewis and many more of

I supported the impeachment
of Bill Clinton. Was I blinkered
by excessive partisanship, as
former Rep. Bob Inglis now says
he was? Possibly. I certainly de-
spised the lying, and I opposed
many of Clinton’s policies. But I
believed then that certain lines
could not be crossed without
creating a dangerous prece-

ual misbehavior lightly. Some
conservatives, myself included,
were appalled that Clinton took
advantage of a young intern and
betrayed his wife and daughter.
How much damage was done to
the culture by the Democrats’
rallying cry, “Everyone lies
about sex”?
And contra Sensenbrenner,
Clinton did more than lie to the
American people, he committed
perjury. Though his lie was “only
about sex,” he did so in a sworn
deposition — and that has to be a
red line. Wouldn’t our culture be
healthier if Democrats had not
chosen tribalism over principle?
Republicans today are flirting
with creating their own awful
precedent: That it’s a normal
part of foreign policy for a pres-
ident to bully another nation to
create a false narrative smearing
a political opponent. The accu-
sation is not just that Trump was
playing hardball with a foreign
leader, but that he was attempt-
ing to subvert the 2020 election.
Like Democrats in 1999, Re-
publicans are now arguing that
“everybody does it.”
Clinton urged that his private
behavior not affect our judgment
of his conduct of the office of
the presidency — even if that
conduct led him into witness
tampering and perjury. Trump is
arguing that the full panoply of
executive powers can be used for
his personal political benefit —
because he does not recognize
any value higher than his own
welfare. That’s why he persists
in saying that the call with Pres-
ident Volodymyr Zelensky was
“perfect” and that he did nothing
wrong.
In the end, by acknowledging
his lie, Clinton at least permitted
the Democrats who supported
him to condemn his behavior as
wrong. Trump is not doing the
same for his Republican defend-
ers. He’s forcing them to insist,
with him, that black is white. It’s
Orwellian.

Donald John Trump, the
greatest President since
George Washington, will be
reelected in Nov. of 2020.
“It’s the economy stupid”
was a winning slogan for Bill
Clinton way back when and it’s
going to work again next year
but for President Trump and
the Republicans this time. Plus
the House of Representatives
and Senate will be back in con-
trol of Republicans for the full
second term while maintaining
the greatest economy in our
country since 1776 and keeping
our country great.
The Democratic party is
just going to slowly ride off into
the sunset after their biggest
defeat ever in the election next
Nov. Mainly because of their
failure to work with President
Trump. They haven’t done any-
thing constructive and haven’t
even debated issues that could
help our country. Ever since
they were given the majority in
our house last year they have
done nothing but cause trouble
for President Trump and for us
and it’s pretty clear that that is
their plan for the coming year
as well. Everything they have
to offer is bad for us and for ev-
ery other country in the world.
From what I can see now they
have nothing to run on other
than “tax us to death and then
tax us even after death.”
So in the election next
November, the most important
election in our history, there
will be millions more people
voting for President Trump
than in 2016. Then after
everyone has voted for Pres-
ident Trump they will go on
down the ballot voting only for
Republicans who are running
for Congress.

Since I first wrote this letter:
Friday job report much
more positive than predicted;
Stock market near all-time
high (but to the benefit of a
minority of families).
Both of these are continuing
Obama-era trends — improved
by Trump — but that may be
coming to a close, anyway, and
neither, by themselves, change
what I described below in my
original letter.
State of the economy, 2019:
n 2nd quarter growth rate:
2.0 percent
n 3rd quarter growth rate:
1.9 percent
It’s not the numbers that
are so important — they are
essentially the same. No, it’s
that President Trump said the
same day via Twitter: “Greatest
Economy in American Histo-
ry”.
This directly contradicts
what Trump said of the Obama
economy which grew at the
same rate during the first quar-
ter of 2012, obviously during
the Obama administration:
“Q1 GDP has just been revised
down to 1.9 percent... The
economy is in deep trouble.”
Isn’t there a saying, “You can’t
have it both ways.”
Here’s another bit of eco-
nomic news. In December,
2017, the Republican congress
passed Trump’s tax cut, prom-
ising that the huge and largely
corporate cuts would stimulate
the economy. They kind of did
— until they didn’t anymore.
The economy grew at slightly
over 3 percent for the last 2
quarters of 2017 and second
quarter of 2018 but have been
below that — and mostly well
below that — since. This is
especially true of the last 2
quarters when they have been
at 2 percent or slightly below.
This recent decline is in spite
of the large increase of federal
spending which, by itself , is
responsible for 25 percent of
the low 1.9 percent growth and
which has increased steadi-
ly overall since Trump took
office. The Obama economy, by
contrast, featured 10 quarters
in which the economy grew at
greater than 3 percent, and,
overall, was as robust annually
as the Trump economy — but
without the tax cut and without
the current downward trend.
All this when Trump said
back in 2017, with economic
growth at 3.3 percent, that he
didn’t see why the economy
couldn’t “accelerate to 4, 5,
and maybe even 6 percent.”
Not a good record for someone
who claims to be a genius at
business.

arc a year ago and could
also benefit from another
collegiate season.
“I realized that when I
get to the NBA, I want to
be developed and I want
to be able to stick there,”
Perry said. “All the play-
ers Coach Howland has
coached that have gone
to the NBA have stuck
there. I know I can trust
Coach Howland to contin-
ue to develop me and get
me to the next level.”
Perry should predom-
inantly play the four po-
sition, while Columbus
native Robert Woodard
II will start at the three
and will be expected to
log about 30 minutes per
night. Woodard will be
counted on to stretch the
floor, as Howland called
him one of the team’s bet-
ter 3-point shooters.

will have to win at Phoe-
nix to get in the final four.

day, Elliott got loose and

pion Jimmie Johnson has
gone a career-long 93 rac-
es without winning, but
he led nearly half of the
second stage at Texas.
Johnson led 40 laps in
the second 85-lap seg-
ment at Texas, where he

is more than capable of

trying to match up with
them, and he’s our best
perimeter defender, no
doubt about it.”
