Date: 12-2-2018
To be performed by: Men’s Choir, Treble Choir, SATB Choir, Combined Choirs (Grades
9-12)
Concert Rationale: Themes of transformation and growth are everywhere in music. There
are songs about the dark times, the journey through them and the bright times ahead. Each
Choir’s set shows transformation through these experiences. The treble choir’s music
transforms from celebratory worship (Sound the Trumpets) to quiet thoughtful prayer (At
the River, For the Beauty.) The men’s choir’s music transforms from silliness (Down
Among the Dead) to peace (Peace Like a River) and salvation (Salvation is Created). The
SATB choir showcases music’s ability to worship both joyfully (Jabula Jesu) and
thoughtfully (Esto Les Digo) and expresses gratitude that music can just be fun (Buffalo
Gals) while also having deep personal meaning (If Music Be The Food of Love.) All of the
choirs combine at the beginning to express that we are all together as children of the world
(Bonse Aba) and at the end to show that we can all grow to become agents of positive
change in the world (Hope for Resolution.)

celebrate by singing, but we can also use it to call others to gather with us to help improve the world. “At

amongst ourselves as the ultimate goal.

The Treble Choir finishes their set with this John Rutter anthem. One way we can move towards the kind of
world we seek in “At the River” is by showing appreciation for the world we live on. We would be lost in
our attempt to improve our lives if examples of beauty were not so readily available in the natural world
around us. Each stanza of “For the Beauty of the Earth” describes an aspect of our world we can both
appreciate and learn from.

“Down Among the Dead Men” is an over 200 year old tavern song. It reminds us to have fun while we are

In Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, Duke Orsino finds music as a cure for his lovesickness. Just as Orsino
becomes worn down by his obsession with love, we can become worn down, tired and hungry as we work
hard toward our passions and goals. Music is a food that can fill us back up. David Dickau’s setting of
Shakespeare’s text replenishes our souls with rich harmony. The choir also has an opportunity to add
sensitive contrast to the setting.
