BATTERIES
Each DL is powered by an internal rechargeable NiMh battery.
If properly used, the NiMH batteries have an estimated life of at least 500 discharge cycles.
An effect known as the "memory effect", which could degrade the readout performance during the
use, may occur if batteries are left under charge for some days or if they are repeatedly and
partially discharged. In order to prevent this, it is recommended to use exclusively the battery
charger supplied with the DL and to cycle (charge and fully discharge) the batteries at least once
every two/three weeks.
Batteries should be charged only when they are completely discharged and not
before. You could charge them before only in case of extreme need.
In addition, if the DL is not going to be used for an extended period, it is preferred to store it with
the batteries fully charged.
Well charged batteries provide at least 8 hours of continuous use: this means that batteries
provide charge for more than a working day.
If the DL is not used for several months, batteries lose their capacity due to the
auto-discharge. The first time a battery charger is connected, it could signal green
after few minutes also if the batteries are not fully charged: it is advised to repeat
the charge cycle twice.
Using a good battery, a full battery charge allows a non-stop use of at least 8 hours: this means
that with a full charge it is possible to work on site for more than a working day.
BATTERY CHARGER
The supplied battery charger is controlled by a microprocessor which manages a rapid charge in
less than 3 hours.
The input voltage range is universal (90-264 V ).
This battery charger utilises a method called “–dv detection”; this method is based on the fact that
the voltage drops over the NiMH cells when batteries are fully charged. This voltage drop is
detected when the voltage has decreased of a certain percentage from the highest value and the
charge will be automatically interrupted.
If this voltage drop does not occur, the battery charger has a safety timer which will interrupt the
charge after a certain period of time to avoid batteries overcharging.
If batteries have not been used for a long period of time, the voltage could decrease in the first
part of the charge cycle. For this reason, a start-timer is built into the battery charger to prevent –
dv detection in the first minutes of the charge cycle.
Don’t take instrument readings with battery charger connected to the DL.

Don’t use a different type of battery charger than the one supplied
(0ECAB12VNMB)
INTERNAL TEMPERATURE
If the internal temperature of the DL is more than 70°C, there is a safety system
that disconnects the battery until the temperature decreases under 70°C.
Therefore, if after having charge the battery the DL won’t switch on, wait for the
battery cooling until it returns within an adequate temperature range.
The battery charger is activated connecting the jack to the readout and then connecting the
battery charger to the voltage line.
NOTE: To avoid malfunctioning, always insert the jack of the battery charger in
the DL before connecting the battery charger to the voltage line 90-264 VAC, 50-
60Hz. Similarly, before disconnecting the jack of the battery charger from the
readout, disconnect the battery charger from the voltage line.
The LED on the battery charger will be yellow before the fast charge starts and orange when the
carge has started. When the batteries are fully charged the LED will be green.
The battery charge does not remain connected to the DL more than 24 hours.
If the battery voltage is less than the normal one, the LED will indicate "error" by flickering green
and orange light.
LED MODE
Yellow Battery not connected
Yellow Battery initialization and analysis
Orange Fast charge
Green with intermittent yellow flash Top-off charge
Green Trickle charge
Alternating orange – green Error
Connecting the battery charger to the voltage, the LED will be orange for the first 5-7 seconds,
then it turns to yellow when the initialisation and the analysis start. If the battery is connected, the
charge will start a few seconds later, when the LED changes to orange.
When the charge process has ended, the LED will be green in about 4 second. This is only a signal
to test the service. When –dv has been detected, the start of the completion charge is indicated
with a green LED with intermittent yellow flashes. The LED will be green during compensation
charge.

CONFIGURING SITES
DLs have a permanent memory used to store configuration data, such as Probes and Inclinometer
Tubes, as well as data acquired from inclinometer tests.
Despite the memory maximum capacity is remarkable (2GB), the export and synchronization speed
of the DL connected to the PC depends on the data quantity.
We suggest to not charge excessively the DL memory and to use it only to save DL
files
All data in a DL are divided in sites: how to define sites is a user responsibility.
However, we advise to name these sites with the real name of the fields sites in
which the measurements are performed.
To view the site list , select Configuration in the main menu, then select Sites. The list of sites is
initially empty. To add a new site, make sure that the text box at the bottom of the screen is active
(you should see a flashing cursor in it) and type the name for the new site, then press ENTER.

Archimede Portable Dataloggers User Manual
The name of a site, as well as the name of a Multiplexer, Switch Panel, Work
List or Inclinometer Tube, should be composed of the same characters used
for any valid file name in Microsoft Windows, in other words all the
characters except the following: < > : " / \ | ? *.
To delete a site, select it in the sites list and make sure that the site list is active, then press the DEL
key; if the site is not empty, the DL will ask to confirm the operation.

CONFIGURING PROBES
Probes are configured globally on the DL. They are not divided into sites: this
because it is normal for a user to use probes in different sites.
To browse or edit probes, select Configuration in the Main menu, then select Probes.
The list of probes is initially empty. Later you will be able to edit any of the probes simply selecting
the probe and pressing ENTER. To define a new probe, click the New button.
Select the probe type in the list according to the probe you are using (probes type are listed in
paragraph “Instruments list”) and press ENTER.

You should select the calibration type according to the calibration report of the probe.
Rev.4 -04.07.2016- 28 | P a g e
Archimede Portable Dataloggers User Manual
For digital probes, it is necessary to configure only Name, Notes and Decimals since the remainder
of the configuration is saved on probe memory.
If the field “Decimals” is not filled, the DL visualizes automatically a default decimal number
according to the unit of measure of the digital instrument. The number of default and maximum
digits that the DL could visualize is as follows:
For unit of measure which consider a multiplicative of sin(α) different from 1 and from 2000, you
could use a configuration function which allows to have always a different default number for
every multiplicative.
For digital probes no calibration is required because all parameters are already
configured.
With version 0.6.0 for Archimede firmware, new units of measure for digital
probes have been introduced : °, mm/m and in/ft. In addition, it is possible to
read unit of measure different from sin(α) and 20ksin(α).
The recognition of these units of measure is completely automatic, without any
configuration.
The above-mentioned units of measure and the auto-configuration system of
the decimal digits, will not work in firmware version preceding version 0.6.0.
Read paragraph “CONFIGURATION OF INCLINOMETER TUBES” if you are using a digital probe.
Rev.4 -04.07.2016- 29 | P a g e
Archimede Portable Dataloggers User Manual
The type probe calibration is normally used for biaxial inclinometers; this calibration requires two
groups of parameters, one for each axis. The parameters for each axis are the following:
• S: Sensitivity.
• E: Electrical offset.
• M: Mechanical offset.
• X: Cross axis.
• K: Multiplicative factor
The parameter "K" should be coherent with the previously selected unit. If, for example, it has
been selected 20kSen (α) as the unit of measure, it should be inserted 20000 as a parameter "K".
These parameters are used to convert the electrical measurements into physical values: Sin(α) for
example.
where “final” readings take into account the cross axis effect.
NOTE: usually the parameters of probe calibration are inserted by SISGEO if the probe is supplied
together with the DL.

• A x3 + B x2 + C x + D
Once you selected the polynomial, click the NEXT button to edit the coefficients of the polynomial.
When you have finished the parameters configuration, click the Save button: the newly created
probe will be displayed in the instruments list.
NOTE: Normally the calibration parameters of the probe are set directly from SISGEO if the
probe is supplied with the DL.

Tubes defined in the DL include the parameters describing how the physical tubes should be read.
Therefore, it could be necessary to define more tubes for the same physical tube.
For example it is possible to define a spiralometer tube and an inclinometer tube for the same
physical tube, calling them MYTUBE-SP and MYTUBE.
The DL will display a screen to select the site in which the inclinometer tube is or should be
defined; after a site is selected, it will display a list of tubes defined in the site.
When one or more tubes are listed it is possible to delete one of them by selecting it in the list and
pressing the DEL key: the DL will ask the user to confirm this operation.
It is also possible to make a copy of an existing tube by selecting it in the list and clicking the
Duplicate button: the DL will ask the name for the new tube.
The list is initially empty, so that the only possibility is to click the New button.
The DL will display a screen asking the name for the tube.

Type the name you wish to use for the new tube and press ENTER:
The DL will ask for data for the new tube; these data include:
Unit: The unit of measure to express the tube length and step length: meters or feet
(from which it is possible to obtain the unit of measure of the axis in graphs
produced by Archimede DL)
Length: The useful length of the tube in the specified unit.
Step: The useful length of the step in the specified unit.
Azimuth: The azimuth of the tube; this parameter may be omitted.
Notes: User notes.
Enter the required data and press ENTER to save the tube definition.

In case DL switches off during an inclinometer test, for example for a low battery, the readings
that have already been performed are saved. However, the inclinometer file closes, so it will be no
possible to perform other readings to complete the test. Anyway, it will be possible to delete the
partial test and repeat it in future.
Click Read inclinometer in the Main menu, then select the site in which the inclinometer tube is
located. The DL will show the list of the tubes defined in the site.
Select the tube you wish to use and press ENTER to proceed.
The DL will ask you to enter the number for the test, showing as pre-configured value the first
number available.
Enter a new number or simply press ENTER to proceed. You could perform up to 99 test on the
same tube.
Then the DL will ask you to specify some options on how the test should be performed. This screen
is not displayed for T-REX tests because these options are meaningless in this case.
First, you should specify if the readings should be triggered manually or automatically after a pre-
configured delay.
Then you should select if the runs should be performed from the head to the end of the tube or
from the end to the head.
If you need to do spiralometer test, the system doesn’t ask you this because in these tests you
have to perform the first run “From head to end” and then to perform a run “From end to head”.
Rev.4 -04.07.2016- 35 | P a g e
Archimede Portable Dataloggers User Manual
In the following pages, the DL will ask which test should be used as a reference test. We suggest to
select the first test in the list (labeled 00). Therefore, it is possible to select any test from the list or
to click the No reference button to perform an absolute test.
The values of the reference test will be displayed during the performance of the next test. They
will also be used for graphs elaboration.
The above mentioned page will not be shown in the spiralometer test, since it is not possible to
choose the reference test.
At this point, all the parameters for the data performance have been configured. The DL will ask
which run to do firstly. The number and the type of the runs depend from the type of test:
A1B1/A3B3 An A1B1 run is performed, then the probe is extracted and rotated of
180º and an A3B3 run is performed.
A2B2/A4B4 An A2B2 run is performed, then the probe is extracted and rotated of
180º and an A4B4 run is performed.
A1B1/A2B2/A3B3/A4B4 Runs A1B1, A2B2, A3B3 and A4B4 are performed in sequence;
between each run and the next the probe is extracted and rotated 90º.
Spiralometer A head to bottom run is performed; normally a second bottom to
head run is performed.
TREX A bottom to head run is performed first; sometimes a second head to
bottom run is performed next.
These sequences are those normally performed. Anyway, you could choose to perform runs in the
order you prefer.
Rev.4 -04.07.2016- 36 | P a g e

The DL will suggest the first run to perform. At the end of each run, the DL will suggest the next
run. It is possible to interrupt the test at the end of a run by selecting Save and exit and pressing
ENTER.
INCLINOMETER TESTS
During the execution of a test, what is displayed in the central part of the screen depends on the
type of test. However, the upper part and the left part of the screen shows items common to all
tests.
In the upper part of the screen the Name of the probe being used and the Name of the tube are
shown. On the left the Current date and time and the Measure unit are shown. Four buttons are
also present:
It is possible to stop the test at any time. Pushing the ESC key, a confirmation request will appear.
If you confirm, the test will be deleted. Differently, holding the ESC key pushed for a few seconds,
the data will be saved and the test will be partial. You may also abort the test at any time by
pressing the ESC key: in this case no data will be saved.
During the inclinometer test, you could save a read using the external button (0CDL300REMC). This
button has the same function as the Save button. To prevent the user from inadvertently triggering
multiple readings, the external button is disabled for two seconds after each push. We advise to
wait at least three seconds between each pushing.

runs with the next run (corresponding run) preselected. It is also possible to select “save and exit”
to stop early the runs.

CHECK SUM VALUES
The top blue box displays the Check Sum values for both channels. These are the semi-sums of the
value read for the channel in the current run and in the corresponding run (A1B1 for A3B3 and
A2B2 for A4B4) at the current level, that is:
The readings of the corresponding runs should have almost identical values with an opposite sign,
so when the second of the corresponding run is performed, the check-sum values could be near to
zero. These values are available only when the corresponding reading has already been done.
The bottom blue box shows the Reference values, that are the values read in the same run and at
the same depth of the reference test and, on the right, the Current level in the tube.
The color of the unit of measurement shown in the left part of the screen alternates from black to
blue every time reading values are updated.

With version 0.6.0 of Archimede firmware it has been introduced the auto-
dimensioning of the font of inclinometer reading visualization, according to
decimal digits.
For this reason, the size of the read numbers could vary.
If the DL finds an incompatibility with the digital instrument (i.e. it has been selected a mono-axial
digital probe while the connected probe is bi-axial) a dialog-box will be shown:
Pushing Abort the user interrupts the inclinometer test without saving any data. Pushing Continue
the user returns to the inclinometer test screen in order to re-do it. Pushing Save the user saves
the data that have been registered.
From firmware version 0.6.0 it has been introduced new log for the
measurements that are out of range. These measurements appear as “+OFV”
or “-OFV”, in case the value exceeds in positive or negative the electric range
of measure.

When the user performs an inclinometer test, it is necessary to make a distinction between the
reference test (usually the first test performed, which measures are therefore absolute) and the
other tests in which, what matters is usually the difference between the current values and the
values recorded in the reference test (relative measures).
The graphs for these two options are slightly different.
The graph for the reference test on the left is labeled as ABSOLUTE, while the graphs for the other
tests display a label indicating the test being used as reference. The reference test (or the fact that
a test is absolute) is selected when starting the test and cannot be changed later.
In the absolute graph on the left the blue line represents the inclinometer tube as seen from the
top (the center corresponds to the start of the tube).
In the relative graph the offset of the reference test is subtracted before drawing the graph and
the line represents the movement of the tube from the original position as seen from the bottom
(the center corresponds to the end of the tube

Push ENTER again to view a different representation of the same data. This time the line
represents the displacement of the tube from the vertical line for the first absolute graph and
from the reference measurement for the second relative graph.
Again, the reference zero is the top of the tube for the first graph and the bottom for the second.
Please note that only the absolute value of the displacement is represented. Direction is not
represented. Refer to the first graph to view the direction of the displacement.
In all the case it is displayed only a line for each tube: in case more runs have been performed,
their values are put together to obtain a single value represented in the graph.
In case of relative graphs, all the available runs from both the reference test and the current test
are used. For example, if runs A1B1/A2B2/A3B3/A4B4 have been performed in the reference test
and runs A1B1/A3B3 have been performed in the current test, only runs A1B1/A3B3 of both
graphs will be used.
Press ENTER again to view the same data in tabular form again.

T-REX Graph
When the user performs a T-REX inclinometer test, it is necessary to make a distinction between
the reference test (usually the first test performed, which measures are therefore absolute) and
the other tests in which, what matters is usually the difference between the current values and
the values recorded in the reference test (relative measures).
In the absolute graph on the left the blue line represents the difference between the distance of
the reference magnetic rings and the ideal value of one meter.
In the relative graph the offset of the reference test is subtracted before drawing the graph and
the line represents the lengthening of the tube at each depth from the original state.
If both an UP and a DOWN runs have been performed, they will be drawn as different lines (blue
for UP and green for DOWN).
For relative graphs a line is drawn only if the relative data is available both in the current and in
the reference test.

This same connector is used to connect the external button used to save
instruments readings. These two uses are not compatible: when an external
button is connected, the USB cable cannot be used and connecting an USB cable
when the DL expects a button will cause the PC to issue a warning stating that
the USB detection failed.
The first time Smart Manager interfaces with the DL, it could be necessary to wait
few minutes for the synchronization.

When you use SmartRemote, the DL is slightly slower than usual. This is normal and it is due to the
fact that the screen must be transmitted to the PC.
The DL is fully operative when it is used with SmartRemote, except for the USB
Disk and USB Calibration. These functions in the Communication menu are
disabled.
In addition, during the instruments readings, the external button could not be
used.
Click Remote management off button in the Communication menu to terminate SmartRemote mode.
