Ashok Nagar has completed the investigatory project during the academic year 2019-2020 towards partial fulfillment of credit for the Chemistry practical evaluation of CBSE 2020, and submitted satisfactory report, as compiled in the following pages, under my supervision.

(MRS. KALAVATHY, P.G.T CHEM) I feel proud to present my investigatory project in the subject of chemistry about the topic “Study of the effects of metal coupling on rusting of iron”. This project would not have been possible without the proper guidance of chemistry teacher Mrs. KALAVATHY Who had guided me throughout this project in every possible way. I would like to thanks Mrs. KALAVATHY for guiding me systematic basis and ensuring that I completed all my research with ease. I would like to thank Mr.Samuel, Lab Assitant, for his help during the course of completion of this project. INTRODUCTION AIM OF THE PROJECT APPARATUS REQUIRED CHEMICALS REQUIRED PROCEDURE OBSERVATION CONCLUSION RESULT REFERENCE Metals and alloys undergo rusting and corrosion. The process by which some metals when exposed To atmospheric condition, moist air, carbon dioxide form undesirable compounds formed are usually oxides. Rusting is also the of corrosion but the term is retricted to iron. Chemically, rust is a hydrated ferric oxide. The microbial corrosion damage in iron is in the form rusticles. Rusting an Electromechanical mechanism:In The presence of dissolved oxygen and carbon dioxide, the commercial iron behaves asif composed of small electrical cells. At anode of the cell, passes into the solution as ferrous ions. The electron moves towards cathode and form of hydroxyl ions. Under the influence of dissolved oxygen the ferrous ions and hydroxyl ions interact to form rust. SOME OF THE METHODS TO PREVENT CORROSION AND RUSTING ARE STATED: BARRIER PROTECTION: In this method, a Barrier film is introduced between iron surface and atmosphere air. The film is obtained by painting, varnishing, etc.
GALVANIZATION: The metallic iron is covered
by layer of more reactive metal such as Zinc (Zn) IN THIS PROJECT THE AIM IS TO INVESTIGATE THE EFFECT OF THE METAL COUPLING ON THE RUSTING OF IRON.
FOUR CHINA DISH
FOUR TEST TUBE FOUR IRON NAIL4 BEAKER SAND PAPER WIRE GAUGE COPPER STRIPES ZINC STRIPES MAGNESIUM STRIPES POTASSIUM FERRICY ANIDE SOLUTION PHENOLPHTALEIN
1. At first we have to clean the surface of the
iron nails with the help of sand paper. 2. After that take iron nail and wind a strip of Zinc around the iron nail nail, the take a second iron nail and wind with copper stripes, then the third iron and wind it with Magnesium strips. 3. Then put each of these nails in one china dish each and the fourth iron nail in the fourth dish, they are separated so that they have no contact whatsoever. 4. Then fill the china dish with agar solution in such a way that only lower half of the nails are covered with the liquid for atleast a day or so.
5. The liquid set to a get on cooling.
6. Two types of patches are obsereved around
the rusted nail one is blue and other is pink.
Blue patch is due to the formation of
potassium. Ferricyanide whereas pink patch is due to the formation of hydroxyl ions which turn colourless phenolphthalein to pink. IT IS CLEAR FROM THE OBSERVATION THAT.. COUPLING OF IRON WITH MORE ELECTROPOSITIVE METAL SUCH AS Zinc, Magnesium RESISTS CORROSION AND RUSTING OF IRON. COUPLING OF IRON WITH LESS ELECTROPOSITIVE METAL SUCH AS COPPER INCREASES RUSTING AND CORROSION.
