Comparative study of herbal

mosquito repellent
with herbal liquidator

akshara. Mat.hr.sec.school
ABSTRACT

Every year 700 millions of people are dying because of mosquitoes. Mosquitoes

spread diseases like malaria, dengue, chikengunya etc. Due to stagnant water and

water in closed vessels, mosquitoes spread diseases to us. Mosquito repellents and

liquidators become important tools for us to repel mosquitoes. Different branded

chemical repellents and liquidators are available in the market. It contains more

chemical. Even though it repels mosquitoes, various health issues like breathing

problems, headache and irritation in eyes were experienced by humans after usage.

To avoid all these problems we decided to make a herbal mosquito repellent and

liquidator to kill mosquitoes. This will not create any health issues to people. We have

collected 5 types of medicinally valuable leaves in equal quantities and ground it fine.

It was mixed with saw dust for burning and gum powder was added for binding. We

made five coils and liquidators. We also made other coils and liquidators using all 5

leaves and compared the herbal repellents with the liquidator to find out which coil

or liquidator repels mosquitoes more effectively for a longer duration.

INTRODUCTION
Mosquitoes transmit diseases without being affected themselves. Nearly 700

million people get a mosquito borne illness each year resulting in over one

million deaths. An estimated 781,000 people died from malaria in 2009 according

to the world health organization’s 2010 world malaria report, accounting for

2.23% of deaths worldwide. People use chemical mosquito repellents everywhere.

After using chemical based mosquito repellents 11.8% people were affected by

various health issues like breathing problems, headache, irritation in eyes, bronchial

irritation, cough, cold, running nose and skin infections . A couple of them also

developed asthma after using these repellents. So we decided to make natural

mosquito repellents that will not harm us.

We have made 6 types of natural mosquito repellents and liquidators. These do not

emit much smoke and don’t cause dreadful problems to human beings and the

environment. It repels only the mosquitoes. We collected the ashes resulting from

these repellents and used it as insecticide instead of chemical pesticides, with good

results.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

Our aim to identify the best repellent among the herbal mosquito repellents
and herbal mosquito liquidators.

Our objective are,

 To collect medicinal herbs

 To prepare repellent / liquidators
 To compare the repellents and liquidators.
 To create awareness.
HYPOTHESIS

Herbal mosquito repellent/ liquidator may repel mosquitoes.

Herbal mosquito repellent / liquidator may not repel mosquitoes.

NEED STATEMENT AND RELEVANCE

We wanted to do this project to repel the mosquitoes. The repellents and

liquidators that are available in shops contain a lot of chemicals. To avoid this

we made natural mosquito repellents and liquidators. We are depending on

different herbal plants instead of one particular herbal plant. If we do like this

we prevent the plants from getting destroyed too. Farmers use chemical

pesticides to plants. To avoid this we collected the ashes from the natural

repellent and used it as pesticide. It was also found to be beneficial.

METHODOLOGY

Neem Nochi Thumbai

Omavalli Lemon

We have collected 5 types of leaves such as Neem (Azadirachta), Nochi(Vitex

negundo), Thumbai(leucasaspera), lemon(citrus) and Omavalli(karpooravalli). First we
took equal quantities of all the types of leaves. We ground,
mixed it and made it into a paste. We took liquid from the
extraction to kill mosquitoes. We added sawdust for burning
and gumpowder to it. We made pellets from that repellent.
We dried it in the shade for 4 days. We did the same

process for each type of leaf. At last we made 6 types of

repellents. We collected the ashes and used as pesticides to
plant.
OBSERVATION

6 types of repellents were made and all worked well. The repellents repel all the
mosquitoes. Neem worked for more minutes than the other repellents. Thumbai,
omavalli , and nochi burnt for 40,30,35 minutes respectively. But neem burnt for 50
minutes. Mosquitoes didn’t come near me when I had rubbed the extract of repellent
all over my body. This will not cause any side effects. While doing our project, we
collected the extract of five leaves and applied on our body. We were not bitten by
any mosquito in the open place. It doesn’t harm our skin. It acts as a germicide.
Odomas cream, which is available in shops is made using chemicals. It causes so many
skin problems. We can avoid these chemically prepared items by using herbal extracts
instead. When we go out into open places, we can be free of the mosquito menace, if
we apply these herbal extracts.

DATA ANALYSIS

all the above

Repellents Time taken burn fully

Neem 50 min
Thumbai 40 min
Omavalli 30 min
Lemon 38 min
Nochi 35 min
All the above 45 min
RESULT

Our herbal mosquito repellents and liquidators are better products when

compared to the available chemically prepared coils and liquidators. When put

in comparison to these herbal mosquito liquidator is the best one because it

kills the mosquito’s larva and the extract safeguards us from mosquitoes bites.
CONCLUSION

We concluded from doing this project that liquidator kills the mosquito’s

larvae and repels mosquitoes without causing us any harm. So we can

safely use these items and be benifitted.

AWARENESS

As a part of our project, we have created awareness among school children

and in our neighbourhood. We told them to keep the vessels containing

water covered, to keep inverted plastic cups, coconut shells etc. If they

already had worms in the stagnant water, we asked them to pour neem

extract and nochi extract. Nochi extract would kill the worms. If the

number of mosquitoes was more we explained to them about the

preparation of mosquito repellent to repel mosquitoes. We asked the

children to apply the prepared extract on their body to safeguard

themselves from mosquito bites.

SOULUTION TO THE PROBLEM

Mosquito has become a major problem and the chemical repellents and liquidators
used, do not solve it. These repellents and liquidators cause many health issues to
humans. For this reason, we made natural mosquito repellents and liquidators. These
will not create any health issues to us. There are many benefits in using a natural
mosquito repellent and liquidators. The smoke of natural mosquito repellent has
medicinal values.

Benefits of natural mosquito repellent.

Natural mosquito repellent and liquidators are made up of mosquito repellent herbs.
These repellents will not cause allergies. Your kids will never get affected by
chemicals from usual chemical vapourizers that you may have been using. It is always
better to use natural mosquito repellents and liquidators as they don’t contain
dangerous chemicals like deet or prallerthin that are found in any chemical repellent
or liquidators.

Smoke effects of :

Neem : Its smoke controls air borne bacteria.

Thumbai : It does not produce any smoke which is allergic to asthma patients. The
smoke of thumbai leaves are more toxic to filarial vector mosquito and culex.

Omavalli and lemon:These leaves also repel mosquitoes and it will not produce any
harmful smoke that affects humans.

Nochi: Kill mosquitoes’ larva(larvicidal)

FUTURE PLAN

We are planning to prepare a lot of herbal mosquito repellents and

liquidators and visit villages in the vicinity of our school to spread

awareness about its benefits and explain about its preparation for home

use.
