INTRODUCTION

BIOMETRICS:
• It is defined as recognising and identifying a
person based on psychological or behavioural
characteristics.

• These are used to identify individuals in a

group of surveillance.
Types of Biometrics
DRAWBACKS OF EXISTING TECHNOLOGY

In present days, where

individuals can access their personal
data anytime and anywhere, people
are also faced with the risk that others
can easily access the same
information.
FINGER PRINT TECHNOLOGY:

➢Can be easily copied.

➢Wrong results if the finger is dirty or
wounded.
➢False positives if the software is not
sufficiently sophisticated.
➢Concerns over hygiene.
IRIS SCANNIG:

Iris scanners can be easily fooled by a

high quality image of an iris or
face in place of the real thing.
➢ Accuracy of scanners can be affected
by changes in lighting.
➢ More expensive than other forms of
biometrics.
➢ Very difficult to perform at a larger
distance.
FACIAL BIOMETRICS:

Susceptible to environmental changes

such as lighting.
➢ Depends on the expressions of face.
➢ Changes in appearance with the use
of cosmetics, hair styling etc
➢ It's estimated there's a 5% drop in
accuracy per year due to aging.
PLAM VEIN TECHNOLOGY

• ONE’S PALM is used as the “PASSWORD” for verification.

• Fujitsu has developed the palm vein technology which has a high level of
authentication accuracy due to the uniqueness and complexity of vein
patterns of the palm.
Palm veins as data for personal identification

• The human palm vein pattern is extremely complex.

• Veins are located inside the human body, and therefore it is
Protected against forgery and manipulation.
• The position of the palm vein vessels remain the same for
the whole life and its pattern is absolutely unique.
• Records vein patterns only in live individuals. Therefore, zero
possibility of manipulations involving deceased entities.
PRINCIPLE

• This technology uses the working of

pulmonary circulation in the human
body.
• The veins contain the deoxygenated
hemoglobin in blood while the
arteries and capillaries contain
oxygenated hemoglobin in blood.
• The veins when passed through
infrared rays ,absorb the infrared light
and appear as blue pattern.
Registration through palm vein technology

STEP 1:
• It consists of palm vein scanner.
• Hold your palm a few centimeters over
the scanner.
• The vein pattern is scanned and the
vein picture is stored.
STEP 2:
• The registered palm pattern is stored into the data base along
with personal details of the client.

WORKING

• Place your palm near to the scanner.

• The scanner flashes the near-infrared rays on the palm.
• The deoxygenated haemoglobin in the blood
flowing through the veins absorb the near
infrared rays, illuminating the veins and
making it visible to sensor.

• The image is optimised and compared with

database which is already stored.
Photography

There are two methods of photography to capture the pattern of veins.

1. Reflection photography
The reflection method illuminates the palm and photographs the light
that reflected back from the palm.
2. Transmission photography
The transmission method photographs light that passes straight
through the hand .
• Both types capture the near-infrared light
given off by the region used for
identification after diffusion through the
hand.
• However , Fujitsu employs the reflection
method as the transmission method results
in a lighter, less-contrasted image
(especially when the body is cool) in which
it is difficult to see the vessels.
Accuracy

On the basis of testing the technology by Fujitsu :

• The system had a False Rejection Rate (FRR) of 0.01%

(i.e., only one out of 10,000 scans were incorrect denials for access).

• A False Acceptance Rate (FAR) of less than 0.00008%

(i.e., incorrect approval for access in one in over a million scans).
COMPARISION
