PROVING TWO TRIANGLES ARE CONGRUENT
LEARNING TARGET:
A. Discuss the steps in proving triangle congruence.
B. Demonstrate patience in proving the congruence of two triangles.
CONCEPT NOTES:
Two triangles are congruent if their vertices can be paired so that corresponding sides are congruent and
corresponding angles are congruent.
Suggested steps in proving congruence of two triangles:
1. Mark the given.
2. Mark reflexive sides or vertical sides.
3. Choose a method as to SSS or SAS.
4. List the parts in the order of the method. Fill in the reason why you mark the parts.
Examples:
̅̅̅̅ ≅ 𝐴𝐶
Given: 𝐴𝐵 ̅̅̅̅
̅̅̅̅
𝐴𝐷 bisect ∠𝐴
Prove: ∆𝐴𝐵𝐷 ≅ ∆𝐴𝐶𝐷

`STATEMENT REASON
a. ̅̅̅̅ ≅ 𝐴𝐶
𝐴𝐵 ̅̅̅̅ a. Given
b. ̅̅̅̅
𝐴𝐷 bisect∠𝐴 b. Given
c. ∠𝐵𝐴𝐷 ≅ ∠𝐶𝐴𝐷 c. Definition of angle bisector
d. ̅̅̅̅ ≅ 𝐴𝐷
𝐴𝐷 ̅̅̅̅ d. Reflexive property
e. ∆𝐴𝐵𝐷 ≅ ∆𝐴𝐶𝐷 e. SAS Congruence
