•Cuando se involucra la expresión “hay”, ésta se debe utilizar teniendo en cuenta que
son preguntas con there + be, así:

• How many apples are there in the basket?


• How many people were there in the party?
• How many children will there be on the trip?
• How many dogs were there in the park?
• How many students were there in the English class?
• How many colors were there in the rainbow?
•Las respuestas a estas preguntas son sencillas, empleando las alternativas vistas
anteriormente para acompañar a los sustantivos, ya sean contables o no contables.

Ejemplo:

•How many people were there in the party?


• There were 20 people

•How many students will there be in the English class?


• There will be 26 students.
Examples:
 There are several students in this classroom.
 We were running and we saw a lot of policemen in the park.
 Yesterday, a few English teachers had a meeting in this town.
 The police found some new cars in the parking lot.
 I saw a large number of red chairs in this classroom.
 My father was thirsty and he drank a lot of orange juice.
 There is a bit of water in that small bottle.
 There is a little cheese left, we need to buy more.
 During breakfast, my mother gave us a great deal of advice.
 There isn’t any sugar in this cup.

 ‘Much’ and ‘Many’ are used in negative and question forms.

Examples:
 How much milk did you buy?
 How many apples have you eaten?
 There's not much meat in the fridge.
 There weren't many guests at the party.

 They are also used with ‘too’, ‘(not) so’, and ‘(not) as’
Examples:
 It's a problem when there are so many people.
 There's not so much work to do this week.

 In affirmative statements, we use ‘a lot of’:


Examples:
 I've a lot of work this week.
 There were a lot of people at the concert.
These expressions show the speaker's attitude towards the quantity
he/she is referring to:

 ‘A few’ (for countable nouns) and ‘a little’ (for uncountable nouns)


describe the quantity in a positive way:
Examples:
 "I’ve a few friends" = Maybe not many, but enough
 "I've a little money" = I've got enough to live on

 ‘Few’ and ‘little’ describe the quantity in a negative way:


Examples:
 Few people went to the concert. = The concert wasn’t as perfect as
they want.
 She had little money = almost no money.
 I can’t buy that car. I have little money.
 The party wasn’t fun. There were few guests.
 We use ‘no’ instead of “not any” with uncountable or plural countable
nouns in affirmative sentences.
Example:
 There isn’t any water = There is no water.
 There weren’t any boys = There were no boys.

The nouns ‘Fish’ and ‘Chicken’ can be both countable or uncountable:

•They are countable when they refer to the animal as such.


Example :
 There are many chickens in the farm; I saw a few colorful fish in the fish
tank.
• They are uncountable nouns when they are used to refer to their meet as
food.
Example :
 I want a little chicken for dinner; we want three plates of fish.
