Aim of lesson:
To enable students to gain knowledge on how to describe a proper story setting and be able to write one using
their own perspectives.

Step – by – step lesson plan:


Topic:

Describing a story setting.

Resource:

Ppt, samples, handouts, notebooks.

Warm up:

1. Brainstorming:
a. What technique of writing are we learning?
b. What is necessary to be descriptive?
c. What does effective descriptions appeal to? How?
d. What are the things that you need to describe while writing?
2. What are the few things that make up a good story?
a. How a story does develops well – elements of a story?
i. The elements will be listed on the board as given by the students.
ii. The first will be taken up for a detailed discussion – ‘setting’.

Main Activity:

1. Students will be taught with a powerpoint presentation to help them develop their notes of descriptive story
setting.
a. Use of five senses will be discussed to clarify the concept of sensory details.
2. Sample descriptive passages will be read out to them and they’ll be asked:
a. to reflect on how they feel when they hear the details?
b. How does it effects its senses?
3. Now they will given writing tasks to implement what they have learnt using metaphors, similes and
personification.
a. The literary terms will be discussed in detail each followed by a writing task.
b. After every writing task groups will be encouraged to read what they have written, while the others
will give their critical views and suggest improvement.
4. In the end they’ll be given a self-assessment task to note the difference the lesson has made.

Wrap up:

1. A quick go through the concept:


a. Sensory details
b. Using literary devices
c. Use of verbs, adverbs, adjectives etc.

Homework:

1. Choose a descriptive passage from The Messenger Bird and write down:
a. Why did you like it?
b. What sensory details does it focus on?
c. Which literary device has been used?
d. What effect does it create?
