Carbon Footprint
The carbon footprint is an indicator which is the absolute sum of all GHG emissions caused
directly or indirectly by an individual, organization, event or product. In a simple way, the
carbon footprint can be understood as the mark that is left on the environment with each
activity that emits greenhouse gases.
What is more, the carbon footprint allows characterize the balance between fixation and
emissions of greenhouse gases throughout the cycle of production, which means from
extraction of the raw material going through the production, transport, storage and use, until
the elimination.
In my case, my carbon footprint is 16.75 tons of 𝐶𝑂2 (Figure 1) which is it about 8 person
who live in my house. So, the carbon footprint per person in my house is 2.09 tons of 𝐶𝑂2.
The average footprint of a person in Ecuador is 2,76 tons of 𝐶𝑂2 and the global objective to
fight with the climate change is 2 tons of 𝐶𝑂2 per person.

Figure 1

Analyzing the carbon footprint result, my house is in the range of the average carbon
footprint but it’s a little bit more than the global expectancy. For that reason, we have to
reduce using some devices that produce a big amount of 𝐶𝑂2 such as car, petrol, gas,
consuming food, and start using less some electronic devices.
Ways to reduce your carbon footprint
The carbon footprint can be reduced following the next tips:
1. Disconnect the charger from your cell phone
Even if you are not using the charger, if you leave it connected, it continues to consume
energy and contribute to climate change.
2. Keep your refrigerator clean

The excess of plastic bags and packaging make your appliance needs more power to cool, and
with it more electricity is spent.
3. Use cloth bags when you make the super
Sure you already knew, but one of the biggest enemies of the environment is the excessive
use of plastic.
4. Return to the thermos
Buy plastic bottles with liquid every time you are thirsty is unfriendly to the planet, better
buy a thermos and carry your drinks in it. Over time you will see that the savings will also be
remarkable.
5. Keep your car in good condition
Cars with proper maintenance, such as properly inflated tires, generate less emissions of
greenhouse gases, plus they will not leave you lying on the road.
