FIELD TRIP REPORT TO TUNKU TUN AMINAH LIBRARY

INTRODUCTION

University Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) is known to have the largest library in
South East Asia since May 2010. To have come this far it is definitely not an easy task.
Many researchers and developments have been made to improvise the conditions and
facilities of UTHM library. The first library in UTHM began operating on 1st October
1993 where UTHM still known as Pusat Latihan Staf Politeknik. At that time that was
only a two storey building that can accommodate 120 users and consists of only 5000
copies of books inherited from the Politeknik Batu Pahat. Later in year 2000 the library
building was extended to support the increasing number of users and in the year 2004
UTHM has opened a branch library which is situated at the town campus.

For now Tunku Tun Aminah Library is a 5 storey building and has a floor area of 16
000 square metres. It is so big that it could accommodate at least 3000 users. Besides
that, this library can fill as many as 300 000 volumes. As for now UTHM library holds
more than 182 000 copies of references books in various fields, 8000 title of thesis, 150
title of printed journal, 180 title of electric journal, 40 title of magazines and 22 000
copies of audio visual materials.

Objective :
1. To know about how this library operate and also to get know more information for
their services in facilities provided.
2. To promote this library to public as we know UTHM library is the largest library in
the South East Asia.
3. To provide information to all students about the overall picture of UTHM library

Field Observation
An academic library is a library attached to a college or university. Its purpose is to
serve students in scholarly pursuits, and to aid faculty research. It serves as a repository
for the institution’s history, such as storing dissertations and university publications.
They are often central to the teaching and research missions of the college or university.
UTHM library is open from Sunday to Thursday from 8.00 a.m until 10.00 p.m except
for 24 hours room. It is open 24 hours everyday. From the observation from mid-day
till evening, there are variety of visitors come to UTHM library and not limited to
student only but after 6.00 pm most of the visitor consist of UTHM students. There are
librarian provided at the library to assist the visitor to find the information needed.
From our experience and observation during field trip, it is easy to find any information
or academic material needed since the library is provided with an online system to assist
student to find any journal, books and etc. Borrowing of library materials can be done
at the Circulation Counter or by using the self-check out machine. Users are required
to bring their student/staff card and prohibited from using other user’s card. Users will
be given a borrowing slip for each transaction. Users are advised to check the due date
on the slip or in the library account in order to avoid fines for late returns. Returning
of the materials can be done at the Circulation Counter or by using the book drop. Users
will be given a returning slip for each transaction. Users are advised to keep the slip
and check the library account to ensure that the records has been updated.
Last but not least, there are 18 facilities provided in this library as listed below:

Each facility provided has its own function according to the visitors needed.
Lastly, one of the significance problem identified is library operating hours during
weekend. As stated before UTHM library is closed during weekend and this makes
student unable to find academic material needed in the library especially for final year
students. This problem is important and need an attention from the management since
most of the students is busy with their lecture class project and etc. Hence, they only
have free time during the weekend.

CONCLUSION

This field trip to UTHM library made us gain many valuable knowledge and experience
that we cant obtain during lecture. We are very proud that our university had such a
good library. Hope that students will take this opportunities to use all the facilities
wisely.
