As kids who are still in the early years of development, it is easier for them to be

implanted with knowledge using creative methods. Activities that would catch their attention

should be done so that they will be able to memorize or analyze data and since it matches their

interest, they would divert their attention to it enabling them to assess the information that the

activities contain. Their mind will easily process or work on things that are interesting for them.

Showing pictures is one of the creative methods.

Kids are still improving and their capability is also limited due to lack of experiences.

Educators really need to start with the basics and slowly set the standards higher as they go on.

The researchers want to conduct a study to test or determine the behavior and comprehension

of the Grade 3 pupils of St. William’s Institute in the storytelling through showing of pictures.

Storytelling is the conveying of events in words, and images, often by improvisation or

embellishment. Stories or narratives have been shared in every culture as a means of

entertainment, education, cultural preservation, and to instill moral values. Crucial elements of

stories and storytelling include plot, characters, and narrative point of view. (V. Karen, 2018)

Storytelling is an ancient craft; its power is timeless because good stories will always

captivate audiences, whatever the medium. UX designers typically tell on-screen stories,

weaving narratives to make users invest their emotions in our messages. Vitally, we aim to

hook users through their feelings, as opposed to describing our offerings from a

functionalist/task-oriented viewpoint. Indeed, good user experience depends on the success of

users’ achieving their goals “usability-wise”, but storytelling is the framework we use to reach

users. As we learn about our world through metaphors, not bullet-point specifications,

storytelling is the best way to relate to audiences. Effective storytelling means going beyond

getting users emotionally invested, to keeping them engaged after their experiences, too, so

they attach more meaning to our products/services. Brands do this—building an “auxiliary

product” of an experience to advertise their goods and idealized lifestyles. “People think that

stories are shaped by people. In fact, it’s the other way around.” (P. Terry 2019)

There are different ways to tell a story, you can use a role play method, puppets, gallery

walk, discussing the story and many more. But one thing will always be played as an objective,

mainly to help the kids/ students to understand the story in a chosen way. (K. Lyndsay, 2015)

But in this study, we will show how we Determined the Level of Behavior and

Comprehension of the Grade 3 Elementary Pupils of St. William’s Institute through Showing

of Photos.

There are 11 Grade 3 Pupils in St. William’s Institute and the researchers wants to test

and determine the level of their behavior and comprehension in Storytelling while showing

pictures, and the researchers will distribute a questionnaire to each pupil as their data to be used

in the study.

The story revolves around a girl named Jen-Jen who is always being bullied by her

three classmates (Johnny, Mia and Malkova). She never fought back and even prayed for them

since she is afraid. One day, after an encounter with a magician disguised as a janitor of their

school, the three were punished because of their actions. They became cacti. Jen-Jen pitied on

her classmates who were already a plant and decided to take care of them despite from the bad

experiences she went through because of them. The moral lesson of the story is "Treat them

Good even they are Treating you Bad. That is being Righteous"

As the story goes on, the researchers were obliged to observe the pupils on how they

react and understand the story with its pictures. And after telling the story, the researchers gave

them a questionnaire consists of 8 questions, which are; What is the title of the story? Who are

the characters in the story? How do they treat Jen-Jen? How did Jen-Jen treat them in return?

Who saw Jen-Jen being bullied? What happened with the three friends? What did Jen-Jen do,

when she knew that the persons who bullied her became a little plant? What Moral Lesson did

you learn from the story of Jen-Jen and the Three Cactus?

They were given a free time to answer the questionnaire, and it was recorded that they

took 15 minutes to answer their papers. As they were answering the papers, the researchers

observed that most of them was really familiar with the flow of the story, that made it easy for

them to answer the questions. But some of them were not familiar with the names of the

characters.

The researchers observed that they focused more at the pictures than the narration of

the story. Most of their eyes was looking at the photo, which is a good thing. As the narration

goes on, the kids were paying attention because they are observing each photo slide. There was

no big problem to discuss because of the effects of the pictures that makes the kids turn their

eyes and made them observe each of it. This was the result of the questionnaire;

In relation with the table, the 11 students almost got a perfect score. But some of them

were not familiar with the names of the characters that made them confused. 5 from the 11

pupils got a wrong answer with the last question, because they were confused with the Moral

Lesson of the Story.

In conclusion with the result of the given questionnaires; there were 11 Grade 3 pupils

who took the test which consist of 8 questions that is related to the story and photo that was

been narrated to them. There are 5 kids who had a perfect score, 5 kids who had one mistake,

and 1 who had three mistakes.

From the evaluation and observation that was conducted, this conclude that telling a

story while showing photos in every scene is an effective way for students to understand a story

better. Since the students was interested with the presence of the photos, it made them more

inquisitive to learn more about the story, and listen to the narration. Since showing photos in

telling a story is a detailed method for kids to understand stories, it is proven that with this

method, it makes the kids more attentive to listen and understand the flow of the story.

The researchers observed that within this method, it catches the eye of the kids and

make them more attentive with the story. It resulted that they understand the flow, exposition,

rising action, climax, falling action, resolution, settings and the purpose of the story. Showing

photos will always be an effective way, because it helps the kid to imagine wider as he or she

is seeing a proper scene.

The researchers conclude that The Grade 3 Pupils of St. William’s Institute was been

tested and was proven that their Behavior and Comprehension in Storytelling through Showing

of Photos is VERY EFFECTIVE.

The researchers want to recommend that showing photos in storytelling is an effective

way for kids to understand the flow, exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, resolution,

settings and the purpose of the story. With this creative method, it catches their eyes and make

them more attentive with the presence of the photo that helps them understand the story as they

are seeing a detailed image.
