ORAL COMMUNICATION IN CONTEXT


“The development of listening and speaking skills and strategies for effective communication in various situations”

LEARNING COMPETENCIES EN11/12OC-Ibe-8 and EN11/12OC-Ibe-9

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the session 85% of the students would be able to:
a. define the word function and purpose based on what they know;
b. appreciate the purpose and function of communication through an activity; and
c. create a poster that would communicate its purpose.

II. SUBJECT MATTER


A. Topic: Functions of Communication
Subtopic: Identifying Speakers Purpose
B. Reference/s: SpeaC, Speak and Listen in Context pages 11-12, 37-49
C. Materials: Projector, Posters

A. Preliminaries

B. Lesson Proper
1. Activity
The teacher is going to group the students by 5 and they are going read a text
about the purpose of their lives. After which they are going to share their thoughts
on it. They will be ask the following questions:
a. Why have a chosen GAS as my strand?
b. What is my function in school as a student?
c. What would be the soul purpose of sharing thoughts with everyone?
d. What is your own definition of purpose and function?
2. Analysis
The students will analyze the purpose and function of the different pictures
presented by the teacher.
a. A photo of brainwashing
b. A photo of smoking
c. A photo of man rescuing another in war
d. A photo of a baby trying to walk
e. A Photo on poverty
3. Abstraction
The teacher will process the answers and connect it to the lesson and that will
lead to the next activity.
4. Application
The teacher will group the students into 6 and they are going to create a short
play on the importance of the purpose of communication and its function.
5. Synthesis
The teacher will let the students rate their classmates and give their comments
on the different presentations

IV. EVALUATION
The students will create a poster that shows purpose of communication. They will be
graded through this rubric.
