Science Lesson Reflection

In the start of the lesson the teacher signaled the students to the carpet to let them know they

would be doing a planet scavenger hunt. The classroom management from the teacher was evident

from start to finish of the lesson. When she introduced the lesson, she sounded very enthusiastic

which then had the students engaged and excited to start the scavenger hunt. She set clear

expectations for the students and let them know they would have a total of twenty minutes to go

around the room and write down the facts for each number listed on their paper that she handed out

in the beginning of the lesson. This lesson was an independent lesson which was also addressed

before she let students out on their own to complete the scavenger hunt. During the lesson she

repeated guidelines to remind students of their expectations as well as how much time they had left

throughout the lesson. The teacher would sit with some students and ask elicit questions about some

of the facts that the students were finding to try and see what their prior knowledge was on the

specific fact on the planets or space in itself. At the end of the twenty minutes students were signaled

to the carpet which then they paired up with a shoulder partner to share one interesting fact they had

learned throughout the lesson and were then asked to share to the class their interesting fact they

had discovered to recap. Discussion after an independent lesson is something I feel like is important

because it gives students time to think on their own but then repeat part of the lesson to a partner

that may have missed that fact or maybe just did not quite understand something. I think its also

important for students to learn from their peers other than their teacher at times to get different

perspectives.

This lesson was not a inquiry based lesson. I say this because the teacher did not pose a question in

the beginning of the lesson and also because all the facts were different and it analyzed different

planets so students would not have been able to make a hypothesis on facts on various amounts of
planets for a scavenger hunt. I think to make it a inquiry based lesson the teacher would’ve had to ask

the class why Jupiter has a red spot in which case students could make a scientific guess on why it

Jupiter has a red spot but since it was on multiple aspects and the teacher did not pose a question for

students to make a hypothesis it made it not a inquiry based lesson.

Something I would’ve changed for the lesson would’ve been to make it a small group lesson and have

posed questions for the students to look up and find certain aspects of the planet. At the end of the

lesson I would have each group make a poster board of their findings and present to the class that

way students are more involved with the research of the planets and it also allows the students to

collaborate during the entire lesson.
