What is Microsoft Word?

Microsoft Word is a program that allows you to create written documents


like book reports, school papers, letters, etc.

Anything you create in Microsoft Word is called a document.

When you open Word it will look like this:

Using Word
MENU BARS: The words at the top
of program window.

MENU: A list of actions/things you


can do. The menu will drop down
when you click on one of the menu
bars. For instance, if you click on
„File‟, the menu that drops down will
allow you to save your work by
clicking „Save As…‟

HIGHLIGHT/SELECTING: Hold
down the left click on the mouse and
drag across a word or sentence to
highlight it. When it is highlighted you
can make changes to it (using the
formatting tool bar)

FORMATTNG TOOLBARS: The


icons arranged across the top of the
window. You click on the icons to do
different things (like bold or
underline text). You can also change
the font face or size. If you‟re not
sure what a button does, place the
cursor on top of it to find out.

Practicing in Word

Open Word and type the following sentence:


The man wore a sweater with a purple kangaroo on it.

BOLD: A font style that makes the


letters darker. Represented by the „B’
icon seen right.

 Highlight „The‟ & make it bold by


clicking the „B‟ icon on the
toolbar.
FONT & SIZE: The way the letters Bodoni MT Black Arial
look is called the font. Each font has a Stencil Broadway
name. Some examples can be seen
right. Jokerman Lucida Sans

You can change the font and size by


using the buttons seen on the right.

 Highlight „man‟ and change the


font to Broadway & the size to 16.

UNDERLINE: Underlines words.


Represented by the „U‟ button seen
right.

 Highlight „wore a sweater‟ and


underline it.

FONT COLOR & TEXT HIGHLIGHT
COLOR: Changes the color of text
and the area surrounding it.

 Using your mouse, highlight „with Text Highlight Text Color

a purple kangaroo‟. Change the


font color to white and the text
highlight color to purple.

ITALICS: A font style that slants


words to the right. Represented by
the „I‟ icon seen right.

 Highlight „on it‟ and italicize it.

ALIGNMENT: Click on these icons to


move the text left, center, or right.
This is called aligning the text.
Left Center Right
 Highlight the entire sentence and
center it.

COPY/CUT: Once you‟ve highlighted


something with your mouse, you can
copy it or cut it. Copy creates a copy
of what you‟ve highlighted and keeps
the text in its original place. Cut
creates a copy of what you‟ve Cut Copy
highlighted but erases the original
text. In both cases you will be able to
paste the text somewhere else.

 Highlight the entire sentence.

PASTE: When you copy or cut text,
you can paste it somewhere else.
Using Cut/Paste is a way to
rearrange text that is in the wrong
order without having to re-type it.

 Press Enter on the keyboard five


times. Now Click the „Paste‟
icon.

CLIP ART: You can insert pictures


into a Word Document by clicking
„Insert‟ , then „Pictures‟, then „Clip
Art‟. Just type a search word in and
click „Go‟. Click on the picture you
want. If you want to move the
picture around the page, right-click on
the picture, then click „Format
Picture‟, then „Text Wrapping‟ and
„Square‟. Now you can use the
mouse to drag the picture where you
want it to go.

 Use Clip Art to insert a picture of


a kangaroo. Move it to the middle
of the page.

Use Word Art to create a heading that says „I am…‟ Move it to the top of
the page and make it bigger. Press Enter three times and use bullets to

Places to Visit
Make a table with five rows and two columns. Think of some places in the
U.S. and around the world that you want to visit. Are there any landmarks
in these places that you‟d like to see? A landmark is a building, statue,
park, etc that is important. For instance, the Statue of Liberty in New York
is a landmark. Use the first column to type the place you want to visit and.
Use the second column to say why you want to go there.

** Insert a picture that symbolizes the place in the left column and write at
least two complete sentences explaining why you want to go there in the
right column. Use at least three different fonts**

Mad Libs
Mad Libs is a story-telling game. Start off by typing a 5-7 sentence story.
Then, pick 5 words and erase them. As you erase each word, type in what
part of speech it is (noun, verb, adjective, adverb, etc) . These will serve as
prompts. You can also type in a more specific prompt, like “number”,
“kitchen appliance”, “holiday”, etc. You will read these prompts to a partner
and he/she will respond. For instance, if you say “noun” your partner might
say “baby” since “baby” is a noun. Your partner can‟t see the story until
he/she responds to all of your prompts. Once the words have been filled
in, read the story aloud to your partner.

**Bold and Underline the prompts in the original story. In the finished story,
use text highlight on the words your partner chooses**

Sample:

Last (noun), seven (noun + s) visited me from (proper noun). At


first, my mother was (adjective), but when she found out that they
were staying until (noun) she decided to ask them for (number)
dollars for all the (kind of food) she knew they would eat. They
responded by (verb + ing) and breaking her (item found in kitchen).
My mom immediately called (someone’s name) and had (type of
animal named earlier) taken to (noun). This was the last time I ever
saw them.

Last Halloween, seven aardvarks visited me from Russia. At first,


my mother was (happy), but when she found out that they were
staying until July she decided to ask them for 7 million dollars for all
the meatloaf she knew they would eat. They responded by
jumping and breaking her blender. My mom immediately called
Mark and had the aardvarks taken to a park. This was the last time I
ever saw them.

Tell a Story
Use text boxes and clip art to tell a story. Start by writing down the name
of:
-A city
-A store
-A type of animal
-A type of fruit
-A color

Once you‟ve written these things down, use them to come up with an idea
for your story. Your story should include all of the words you just wrote
down.

**Use at least four text boxes, with a picture to go along with each text
box. Also, bold the words you chose when you put them in the story**
