Important word to know:  What it means:

Genre  Types of texts. In kindergarten we will focus on fiction

(fake), nonfiction (real) and songs/poems.

Pattern  Something that repeats itself over and over.

Literacy connections: When you read with your Scholar, be sure to ask them
what kind of book they are reading.
1. Is it fiction, nonfiction or a song/poem?
2. How do they know?
a. Is it made up?
b. Is it about something they have seen in their life?
c. Talk about the illustrations. Are they photographs or drawings?
3. Have scholars make a prediction before they begin reading.
4. Remind your scholars to ask questions when they don’t understand
something.

Math connections: You can work with your Scholar on counting and
comparing numbers at home. Ask your scholar to count how many slices of
apples they have (or something you have on hand) and compare that to the
number of fingers you are holding up. Which is more or greater than?
Which is less or less than? Are they the same or equal to each other?
