Facing reality
● We live in a world that requires us to prepare for things like “worst case
scenarios” regarding school safety.

● While we would prefer to put our energy towards teaching and learning, it is
important that we ensure student and staff safety.

● Specifically, we have to be sure that we are prepared for an armed intruder

situation should one arise
Today’s drill
● In a moment, you will be taken through scenarios that will require you to
respond to information given to you via the PA system-ALERT

● During this drill, please remember the following items:

○ This is a DRILL.
○ We are conducting this drill as part of our state mandated yearly requirements as
they relate to emergency management.
○ During this drill - BE SAFE and take it seriously.
○ This is not a time to joke around, play games, or do something that could endanger
yourself or your classmates.
○ LISTEN
During this drill...

Be safe!
Do not throw anything

Do not make physical contact with anyone

Take this drill seriously

Make good/smart choices regarding your actions during this drill.

If there is a dangerous situation, we must
Inform everyone.
Tell a staff member if you hear something threatening.
Tell a staff member if you hear about or see a weapon in school.
If there is a dangerous person at school,
your teacher or princpal will Alert you and
others.
Listen to your teacher or principal. Be ready for directions.
This is NOT the time to take out your cell phone
INFORM
Examples of INFORM that support good decisions:

● “There is an intruder in the cafeteria wearing a

yellow jacket.”
● “There is a tall man with a weapon entering the
auditorium.”
● “There is an intruder in the student parking lot.”
If you hear “Lock Down”...
Listen to your teacher’s directions. Be quiet and be ready to move.
You will NOT clump together or hide.
LOCK DOWN
Prepare to counter:
What items in your classroom could you gather that you could use to counter if an intruder
forced their way into your classroom? Name 3 things…

Stay quiet and out of sight… or evacuate if safe

https://youtu.be/V9ZYCiCS5YI
If an intruder comes into our safe space, we
may be asked to Counter.
Listen to your teacher. Be ready to spread out, to throw something, and to move.
Discussion Questions
● Is it okay to throw any and everything at an intruder?

● How does COUNTER keep us safe?

● Why is it important to scatter around the space when in

LOCK DOWN?

● Do you have to counter?

EVACUATE
● Consider the location of the nearest exit outside

● Listen for information regarding the location of the intruder

● Listen to the adult in charge of your classroom/area

● If necessary to break a window, aim for top corner of the frame

● Do NOT run toward danger

● Do NOT attempt to approach a responding officer

Evacuate
● If we do evacuate the building, don’t worry!
● We will find all of our students.
● There will be a lot of people to help!

Discussions and Questions
● How does this training differ from how we used to do lock downs?

● Why is this a more safe approach?

● What questions do you have regarding ALICE?

LOCK DOWN
1. Shortly, you will hear the following statement over the PA system:

▪ “This is a drill. Lockdown, lockdown, lockdown. There is an intruder on school grounds.

This is a drill.”

2. During this drill, we want you to focus on the following:

▪ Ensuring that your classroom door is locked, blinds are closed, and the lights are turned off.
▪ Barricading your classroom door:
What is currently in your classroom that you can use to block entry:
Select at least two items you can use to barricade the door.
Safety First
● This lesson is to provide you with skills to ensure your safety in the very
unlikely event that this kind of situation were to happen in our school
community.

● Our school community is stronger now with this information.

Thank You…
● Be empowered
● Be vigilant
● Be prepared
● Be safe
