CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING
Introduction
It is said that students or youth is the hope of a world that is why it is

just right to provide them an education. According to Nelson Mandela who

was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, political leader, and

philanthropist who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999,

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the

world.” So providing the youth an education and let them learn from the

lessons and by experiences for them to be able to become a productive

citizen which the country’s economy can rely on.

Education is one aspect of life that enables a person to increase the

level of their thinking that provides them the ability to make righteous

decision, have the essential skills, abilities and knowledge that can lead to

the overall growth of the person’s community and nation as a whole. In

education an individual’s skills, knowledge, abilities and proficiency are

enhanced through the learning and academic performance. The academic

performance of a student is determined through class participation,

proficiency test, class assignments, examination and participations to

competitions. But there are factors that can affect the academic performance

of the students. One factor is a break time, which at this time the students are

able to do whatever they want. Like taking a nap to refresh the brain,

socialize and interact with their classmate that increases their productivity

and social skills.

Recess serves a critical role in school as a necessary break from the

loads and the rigor of academic challenges of the students. It may be

commonly practiced in elementary schools and junior high school, but in

some senior high school, it is not. Teens already face a lot of challenges as

they face puberty, and as they take the next level of their education, they

sometimes get bombarded by lots of school works. Students are easily

distracted, but regular, short breaks can help them focus, increase their

productivity, and reduce their stress. Short breaks increase their productivity

and provide them with opportunities to develop creativity and social skills.

In Makati city, one university that provides this kind of education is the

University of Makati. In this university the students are provided with an

education which lets them learn through academic performances and

experiences.

Background of the Study

Some students often struggle with staying focused for a long period of

time. They tend to pay no attention or participate in their class’ activities and

tasks. When students engaged in a task involve concentration for an

extended period of time, the brain messenger chemical tends to “burnout”

UNIVERSITY OF MAKATI
HIGHER SCHOOL NG UMAK 4

that can affect their brain’s capacity to store information effectively. Students

can be easily distracted and get out of focused immediately, it is hard to

focus for a long period of time that it gives them so much stress listening to

teachers in different subjects to study. Every student of Higher School ng

UMak needs break time. Since students have so many things and stuffs to

do. Projects, assignments school performance; they are loaded of works

every week and every grading period. Recent studies show that having break

time, students are more attentive and better able to perform cognitively. This

is because break makes our brain healthy and it helps the brain to function

well in cognitive activities. Both students and teachers benefit from using

break to reduce stress.

Breaks are essential for learning, but the benefits extend beyond the

psychological well-being of a student. It can affect their physical health,

especially to those students who have issues where they have to strictly

follow their schedule of eating. Having no break time may also affect their

mental aspects. Therefore students deserve to have a break time. They need

it to rest their mind and body for a while. Break time will also increase

students’ productivity. Giving them short break will help them focus and reset

their attentions.

Students can also improve their social skills through breaks. They can

socialize with other students and learn how to manage their emotions and

behaviors which is the fundamental skills for life. Students in the University of
UNIVERSITY OF MAKATI
HIGHER SCHOOL NG UMAK 5

Makati have no break times from 6 am to 12 pm straight, unless professors

will give them time to rest and have a snack. That is the only chance to have

a break, relax and conditioned themselves. Studying may be important, but

students’ health and how they behave when in school or during discussion

should be the top priority.

Breaks can be an essential part of learning effectively, and they may

even improve a students’ quality of life.it may only take 10-15 minutes, but it

is so important to students. In some schools, they have long breaks that can

take 1 hour or more. Learning is so important, but the brain needs to rest too

for it to function efficiently. Researchers are studying this to know how having

no break time affects students’ academic performance and productivity in

school.

Statement of the Problem

The University of Makati is known as the University of Character, it

develops a good values and morals within its students UMak belongs to the

top public and locally founded university in the Philippines, the students are

no doubt good academically but how about physically and mentally? Many

students here and abroad experienced a day without a break time due to

their hectic schedule. Some herons and lady herons (UMak students) are

one of them. This study intends to show the importance of having break time

CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
The first chapter shows the conceptual framework of the present

problem and important matters about the research. It is composed of the

introduction about the study, the background and importance, statement of

the problem, and the scope and limitation of the study. In this chapter the

reviews of the related literature are presented for the researchers to be

familiarize with both previous theory and research for the present research to

take place in the development of the discipline. This chapter also suggests

the sources of the data, method and statistical technique that is appropriate

to the solution of the problem. By this review of related literature, researchers

can get strong points and limitation of the previous studies to enable them to

maximize their own investigation about the topic and to arrive in the proper

perspective of the study.

Foreign Related Literature

Students often struggle with staying focused for the long periods of

time. There are many factors regarding this problem, one of them is the time

schedule. Many school in the Philippines are starting their class as early as

6:00-7:00 in the morning, this prevents the students to be focused and active

during the discussion. They also tend to be more pressured and stressed in

the everyday classes without having short breaks at all.

UNIVERSITY OF MAKATI
HIGHER SCHOOL NG UMAK 11

From the American Academy of pediatrics (AAP), in its 2013 policy

statement titled “The Crucial Role of Recess in School”, describes recess as

“a necessary break in the day for optimizing a child’s social, emotional,

physical and cognitive development”. Recess ought to be safe and well

supervised, yet teacher does not have to direct student activities. Having

breaks should have enough time to allow the students to relax their brains

and schools should allow the students to experience recess periods daily.

Break time in school is the time where students stop working or

studying for a brief period, it is either they are resting and conditioning their

mind or eat snacks to re-gain their attention and improve brain function.

According to Schwartz (20140 “You need to give your brain time to

consolidate all the information that’s come in,” “Children shouldn’t be overly

scheduled. They should have blocks of time to promote spontaneity and

creativity.

COGNITIVE/ACADEMIC BENEFITS

Children develop intellectual construct and cognitive understanding

through interactive, manipulative experiences. This type of exploratory

experience is a feature of play in an unstructured social environment. Optimal

cognitive processing in a child necessitates is a period of interruption after a

period of concentrated instruction. The benefits of these interruptions are

best served by unstructured breaks rather than by merely shifting from one

cognitive task to another to diminish stress and distractions that interfere with
UNIVERSITY OF MAKATI
HIGHER SCHOOL NG UMAK 12

cognitive processing. Several studies demonstrated that recess; whether

performed indoors or outdoors, made children more attentive and more

productive in the classroom. This finding was true even though, in many

cases the student spend much of their recess time socializing. In fact, a

student’s ability to refocus cognitively was shown to be stimulated more by

the break from the classroom than by the mode of activity that occurred

during that break; any type of activity at recess benefited cognitive

performance afterward. Although specified time afforded for recess

diminishes with age, the benefit of periodic breaks in the academic day to

optimize cognitive processing applies equally to adolescents and younger

children.

SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL BENEFITS

Recess promotes social and emotional learning and development for

children by offering them a time to engage in peer interactions in which they

practice and role play essential social skills. This time of activity, under adult

supervision, extends teaching in the classroom to augment the school’s

social climate. Through play at recess, children learn valuable

communication skills, including negotiation, cooperation, sharing, and

problem solving as well as coping skills, such as perseverance and self-

control. These skills become fundamental, lifelong personal tools. Recess

offers a child necessary, socially structured means for managing stress. By

UNIVERSITY OF MAKATI
HIGHER SCHOOL NG UMAK 13

adapted and adjusting to the complex school environment, children augment

and extend their cognitive development in the classroom.

PHYSICAL BENEFITS

There is a wealth of literature published on the need for the benefit of

physical activity a fitness, not only for the child’s physical well-being but also

for academic and social maturation. Although not all children play vigorously

at recess it does provide the opportunity for children to be active in the mode

of their choosing a practice movement and motor skills. Importantly, recess

affords young children free activity for the sheer joy of it. Even minor

movement during recess counterbalances sedentary time at school and at

home and help the child achieve the recommended 60 minutes of moderate

to vigorous activity per day, a standard strongly supported by the American

Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) policy, which can help lower risk of obesity.

ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

According to the researchers (Aba & Makinde, 2014) academic

performance refers to level of performance in written works and exams. How

students deal with their studies and how they cope with or accomplished

different tasks given to them by their teachers, within this work measured

from the stand point of academic grades. While according to other

researches (Dixon & Shen, 2017), it refers to academic achievement of

students who meet or exceed performance standards prescribed by course

work.

CHAPTER III
METHODOLOGY
This chapter presents the research design used in the study, including

the locale, type of respondents and the instrument used for data collection. It

also describes the data gathering procedure and the statistical treatment

applied.

Research Design

The overarching aim of this research is to know the importance of

having break time in the academic performance of the grade 12 students in

Higher School ng UMak. It is a significant research in terms of discussing the

arguments regarding on how having no break time can affect students’

academic performances.

This study is quantitative and statistical in nature. A quantitative

research focuses on acquiring numerical data through the use of research

instrument. According to Aliaga and Gunderson (2002), “Quantitative

research is an inquiry into a social problem; explain phenomena by gathering

numerical data that are analyzed using mathematically based methods.”

This study is a descriptive type of research that enables readers to

become more familiar to the phenomena and gain new insights. This study

include includes large sample of population. The purpose of descriptive

studies is to describe and interpret the current status of individual, settings,

conditions or events (Mertler 2014).

UNIVERSITY OF MAKATI
HIGHER SCHOOL NG UMAK 15

Population

This study needs a large number of populations that is why, the

researchers use a sampling technique. The researchers limit its population to

100 students to be their respondents. The portion of the population that will

be used is called sample population. The sample population of this study is

from the different section of Grade 12 ABM students of Higher School ng

UMak.

Sampling Technique

The researchers use a stratified random sampling method to select its

respondents. The sampling technique is done through splitting the chosen

population first in groups, and the overall sample is consist of some members

from every group and then the members of each group are chosen randomly.

The technique is conducted to give a fair and equal representation of the

variables of the study. It is based on the effects and importance of having

break time or having no break time in school experienced by the grade 12

ABM students to know the importance of break time in the academic

performance of the students. This was achieved by conducting a survey in

each group or section with members selected randomly and with each

respondent given a survey questionnaire. After the conducted survey the

answers of the respondents show the effects and the importance having

break time in the academic performance of the students.

UNIVERSITY OF MAKATI
HIGHER SCHOOL NG UMAK 16

Research Locale

The conducted research entitled “The Importance of Break Time to the

Academic Performance of Grade 12 ABM Students in Higher School ng

UMak” is held at the vicinity of university of Makati (Higher School ng UMak)

located at J.P Rizal Ext, Makati. The conducted research is using grade 12

ABM student of HSU as their respondents from the said university. The

respondents answer the survey questionnaire provided by the researchers.

The researchers use grade 12 ABM students since they can provide the

needed information for the data to be done and since the respondents and

the researchers are in the same level, the researchers can compare their

thoughts with the answer of the respondents. The study is conducted on the

first semester of the year 2019-2020.

Research Instrument

The researchers prepare a questionnaire to conduct a survey to gather

data. The research sees to it that there are enough items to collect data to

cover all aspects of the problem and to answer all the specific questions

under the statement of the problem. The prepared survey questionnaire aims

to know the information about the research variable which is the importance

of having break time in the academic performance of the students.

The questionnaire is divided into two parts, Part 1 which is the

respondents profile and Part 2 which includes the frequency survey.

UNIVERSITY OF MAKATI
HIGHER SCHOOL NG UMAK 17

Data Gathering Procedure

Since the study uses stratified random sampling technique the

researchers get their sample population from grade 12 ABM students and

group it according to sections then picking randomly from this chosen

sections. After picking their respondents, the researcher immediately

approached them and explains the objectives of the study before handing out

the questionnaire. The researchers instructed the respondents to respond as

honest as possible to the prepared survey question. The respondents are

given 15 minutes to accomplish the questionnaire. During the conduction of

the study, the researchers give survey questionnaires personally to

guarantee the absolute recovery of questionnaires.

After the days of conducting the survey, the researchers retrieve the

fully filled forms. Then the researchers carefully tabulated, tallied, analyze

and interpreted the result using statistical tools.

Statistical Treatment of Data

In this statistical method, the researchers use data analysis to analyze

and interpret the data gathered during the conducting of the survey. The

researchers use bar graph to visually present the data gathered.

CHAPTER V
SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION
This chapter presents the summary, conclusion and recommendation of

the study including the purpose and the result formulated by the researchers

for the students as their respondents.

Summary

This study was conducted with a goal of determining the importance of

having break time during school hours for the Grade 12 ABM students of

Higher School ng UMak. The purpose of this study was also to determine the

effects of break time to the academic performance of the grade 12 ABM

students.

According to this research, recess serves a critical role in school as a

necessary break from the loads and the rigors of academic challenges of the

students. Students often struggle with staying focused for long periods of

time. According to Schwartz (2014), you need to give your brain time to

consolidate all the information that comes in. Students shouldn’t be overly

scheduled. They should have blocks of time to promote spontaneity and

creativity.

In the researchers’ survey, the findings imply that a larger portion of

the respondents strongly agree to the idea that break time is important and

should be implemented. Having 74% of the respondents who strongly agree

UNIVERSITY OF MAKATI
HIGHER SCHOOL NG UMAK 34

and 20% who agree, it can be said that break time is indeed a need and

necessary to be implemented.

The methods that the researchers used is stratified random sampling

technique, the sample population came from grade 12 ABM students and

pick randomly from the chosen sections. A set of survey questions were

constructed and given to the chosen respondents. After giving the survey

questionnaire, the objectives were explained and the researchers instructed

the respondents to answer with full honesty. After gathering, analyzing and

interpreting the information, the researchers come up with a summary of the

data and it is as follows:

Recommendation

The researchers’ recommendations to further clarify the purpose and set

direction to the study are as follows:

1. Provide a schedule of class hours wherein students can still relax after

hours of continuous study especially if the loads of school works and the

number of units are heavy.

2. As part of the recommendation, the researchers suggest to have a

student lounge where in students can interact and rest after hours of listening

and doing school works.

3. The researchers also suggest to conduct a seminar wherein students

can be enlightened about the importance of breaks in between period.
