Scaffolding Discussions
You can scaffold discussions to help students clearly express their ideas and
feelings about stories they listen to or read.
When you scaffold discussions, students ask more questions and give more
elaborated responses, achieving greater understanding.
This is especially true for struggling readers and English language learners.
• Request clarification.
Asking “why” and “how” questions helps students make inferences and
explain what they are feeling and thinking.
Allow students to converse with each other about what they read.
If students understand that their ideas and responses are valued, they are
more likely to participate.
Pose questions that turn the thinking back to the students for
further consideration, such as, “John thinks the girl is unhappy.
Does anyone know why she is unhappy?”
