What is anxiety?

According to American Psychological Association (APA) anxiety is an emotion


characterized by feelings of tensions, worried thoughts, and physical changes like increasing of
blood pressure. Increase of blood pressure and dizziness, body responses can be the cause of
having anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorder is form of category of mental health diagnoses that
leads to excessive nervousness, fear, suspicion, and worry. The APA describes a person with
anxiety disorder having current inconvenient thoughts or concerns.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual: Fifth Edition (DSM-V) classifies anxiety disorder into three
main types (1.) Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). Is a chronic disorder involving excessive,
long lasting anxiety and worries and nonspecific life events, objects, and situations. GAD is the
most common type of anxiety disorder, and people with the disorder are not always able to
identify the cause of their anxiety. (2.) Social Anxiety Disorder. This is a fear of negative judgment
from others in social situations or public embarrassment. Social anxiety disorder includes a range
of feelings, such as stage fright, a fear of intimacy, and anxiety around humiliation and rejection.
This disorder can cause people to avoid public situations and human contact to the point that
everyday living is provided extremely difficult.(3.) Separation Anxiety Disorder. This is a fear of
separating from a person or a place that provides feelings of security or safety. Separation might
sometimes result in panic symptoms.

Anxiety disorders have a complicated network of causes, including: (a.) Environmental factors:
Elements in the environment around an individual can increase anxiety. Stress from personal
relationship, job, school, or not even financial stable can contribute greatly to anxiety disorders:
(b.) Genetics. People who have family members with an anxiety disorder are more likely to have
themselves. (c.) Medical factors. Other medical conditions can lead to an anxiety disorder, such
as the side effects of medication, symptoms of a disease, or stress from serious medical
condition. (d.) Brain chemistry. Stressful or traumatic experiences and genetic factors can change
brain structure to react more that cause to trigger an anxiety disorder. Psychologist and
neurologist define many anxiety and mood disorder as separation of hormones and electrical
signals to the brain. (e.) Use of or withdrawal from an illegal substance. The stress of day-to-day
living combined with any of the above might serve as key contributors to an anxiety disorder.

Treatments will consist of psychotherapy, behavioral therapy and medication. There are some
exercises and action to help a person with mild and short-term anxiety disorder including: (a.)
Stress management. Learning to manage stress can help limit potential for an anxiety to trigger.
(b.) Relaxation techniques. Simple activities can relieve the mental and physical signs of anxiety.
These techniques include meditation, deep breathing exercises, long baths, resting in the dark,
and yoga. (c.) Exercise to replace negative thoughts with positive ones. Make a list of the
negative thoughts that might be cycling as a result of anxiety, and write down another list next to
it containing positive, believable thoughts to replace them.

Counseling. A standard way of treating anxiety is psychological counseling. This can include
cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), psychotherapy, or a combination of therapies. CBT is a type
of psychotherapy aims to recognize and change harmful thought patterns that form the
foundation of anxious feelings. This encourages to confront their fears and helps reduce
sensitivity to their usual triggers of anxiety.

Prevention. There are ways to reduce the risk of anxiety disorders. Take the following steps to
help moderate anxious emotion. (1.) Reduce intake of coffee, tea, cola, and chocolate. (2.)
Before using herbal medicines, check a doctor or a pharmacist for any chemicals that may take
anxiety symptoms worse. (1.) Maintain healthy diet. (3.) Keep a regular sleep pattern. (4.) Avoid
alcohols and illegal drugs.
