Inquiry on how reliable is memory

Introduction to the topic

My topic will revolve around the human memory and how reliable it actually is. Many
people believe that their memory can be quite reliable, and in some cases even completely accurate;
however, I want to explore the extent of which memory can be considered any of those things. The
reason I have decided to explore the extent of the reliability of memory is because I believe that
lots of people don’t actually realize how flawed our memory can be, and in some cases even
inconsistent. Even if I don’t know much about the details, I think that this essay will help enhance
my knowledge on how we perceive and remember things and how exactly we process them. With
that being said, my essay will focus on how humans try to remember things, and as well how we
recall them. Most of the information that I will be using will be from studies and experiments that
have been conducted in the past in order to attempt to answer the topic.

Method
As stated a while ago, I will be using studies and experiments that have been conducted in
the past as the source of my information. The reason for this is because my topic falls under the
field of psychology, which is the study of mind and behavior. In psychology, it is very common
for multiple researchers to conduct studies and experiments of the same topic or theory, in order
to either approve or disapprove one another. This method has been used for the longest time by
psychologists, and is how a lot of theories in the field have developed and have come to be. By
gathering the information that numerous psychologists have gathered, I feel like I can come up
with my own answer and interpretation for how reliable memory is. To gather these studies in
experiments, I am going to search online on Google Scholar and refer to books about psychology
that are related to this topic. If possible, I would also try to attempt to conduct experiments related
to memory perception on people, with their consent which is signed through a consent form.

General purpose
I believe that my topic is important because like I said, many people don’t realize how
flawed and inconsistent our memory is. By attempting to answer the extent of which it is
inconsistent, I hope that the readers will be able to apply this knowledge to their everyday lives,
so they can at least try to avoid these inconsistencies and share their newfound knowledge on it
with other people.
