I.OBJECTIVES:

1. Identify local, recyclable materials found in the community.

2. Tell the importance of recycling in the community and to people.

A. Content Standards:
The learners demonstrate understanding of materials undergo changes
due to oxygen and heat.

B. Performance Standards:
The learner uses local, recyclable solid and or/liquid materials in making
useful products.

C. Learning Competencies:
Design a product out of local, recyclable solid and or/liquid materials in
making useful products.
(S5MT-Ih-i-4)

II.CONTENT:
Local and Recyclable Materials in the Community

III. LEARNING RESOURCES:

A. References:
1. Teacher’s Guide pages - Curriculum Guide page 30
2. Textbook pages- Science and Health for Elementary 6
Rebecca R. Fallaria, pp. 133-135
B. Other Learning Resources: activity sheets, pictures, Real objects,
power point

IV. PROCEDURES:

Classroom Rules:
1. Listen to your teacher intently.
2. Raise your hand if you want to answer or have queries.
3. Cooperate with your group during class discussion.
4. Speak in a low voice when speaking during group activities.
5. Do the tasks ahead of others or finish it on time.
A. ELICIT
Reviewing previous lesson or presenting the new lesson

Review about 5R’s (Stand when the situation shows 5R’s technique)
1. Use the empty jars of mayonnaise as candy jars or food storage
jars.
2. Put all food residues together with the other trash in one container.
3. Bury aluminum cans and broken glass underground.
4. Segregate glass wastes from plastic, papers and rubber.
5. Burn old tires and broken plastic toys at the backyard.

B. ENGAGE
Establishing a purpose for the lesson

Integrated to English and literacy

The learners will play Minute to Win It (Jumbled Letters)

Divide the class into four. Provide each group with set of jumbled
letters of recyclable materials. Give a minute to arrange the jumbled
letters. The group who can form the letters will be declared the
winner.

What is the main idea of the words that you have form?

C. EXPLORE
Presenting examples/instances of new lesson

Activity (Group collaboration and hands-on activity)

1. Present the rubrics to be followed in performing the activity.

2. Group the learners into four.
3. Distribute the materials and activity sheets per group.
4. Answer the questions after performing the activity.

Questions:
1. What materials are recyclable from your activity?
2. Are these waste materials can be found in our community?

D. EXPLORE
Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills #1

Call reporter for their group presentation.

E. EXPLAIN
Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills # 2

1.What are the common recyclable materials that are found in our
community?
2. What new product can we make out of these?

F. EXPLAIN
Developing to mastery (leads to formative assessment)

HOTS
1. What will happen if all these non-biodegradable or non-decaying
materials be thrown to our environment?

Show a video. Explain.

2. If we are going to help in recycling the waste materials, what will

happen to our environment?
3. Why is recycling important?

G. ELABORATE
Finding practical application of concepts and skills in daily living

NUMERACY
The Barangay Milagrosa advocates a program of “Basura Mo, Ipon
Mo”, where you can sell your garbage or waste materials for 5 pesos
per kilo. If you have the following waste materials, how much will you
earn?

Waste Materials Price per Kilo Amount

Tin cans 5
plastics 5
TOTAL AMOUNT

H. ELABORATE
Making generalizations and abstraction about the lesson

What are the local recyclable materials found in your community?

There are many recyclable materials found in our community,

examples are used paper, plastic bottles, plastic cups, drinking straws,
shampoo and lotion containers, plastics bags, cellophanes, metals,
glasses, tin cans and many others.
How important is recycling to our environment and to people?

It is important to recycle waste materials to:

a. Lessen the production of waste
b. Help clean the environment
c. Prevents sickness
d. Earn money

Differentiated Activities
Group 1- Make a slogan about recycling
Group 2- Sing a song in the tune of “Let It Go”
Group 3- Dramatize the situation
Group 4- Recite the poem about recycling

I. EVALUATE
Evaluating learning

Put a Check (/) if the material can be found in our community, encircle
the possible product you can make out of it. Put (X) if the material
cannot be found in your community, no need to encircle the product
inside the parenthesis.

_____1. Plastic bottle of softdrink (flower vase,,pillow)

_____2. Shredded cellophane (pillow, jewelry box)
_____3. Pack of Bear Brand (flower pot, pencil case)
_____4. Used bond papers (basket, flower pot)
_____5. Deformed bars (kabilya) ( window grills, nails)

J. EXTEND
Additional activities for application and remediation

Literacy
1. Collect wrappers of biscuits, corn chips, candies, etc.
2. Clean them and write on your notebooks 50 English words that you
can read.
3. Cut into tiny strips then make a pillow out of these.
