Chapter 1Introduction and Background1.1. Background Firstly, we start from the word Parachute which is derived from the French word “Parare”, meaning to shield and
“Chute”, meaning to fall so Parachute means a shield during fall. But with time, the applications of parachute become too wide therefore parachutes are also known as
“Aerodynamic Decelerators”. The primary function of parachute is the maximization of system to decelerate. Now days the parachutes can be used to decelerate the aircraft
or other vehicles for effective landing on wet or icy runways and for high speed emergency landings. These parachutes proved to be so effective that they are now used for all
landings, resulting in a substantial reduction in tire and brake wear [1]. Ribbon type aircraft deceleration parachutes were used successfully during World War II, but the
present-day ring slot deceleration canopy reduces the long landing rolls associated with high speed jet aircraft landings. A single canopy brake parachute is designed to stop
the aircraft, having landing weight varying from 9500 kg to 15760 kg, for normal landing at speed of 260 kmph and emergency landing speed of 310 kmph, respectively.
Figure 1.1: F-35A Drag Chute System [8] 1.2. Aerodynamics of Parachute The aerodynamics of a parachute is one aspect of their multifaceted design. Based on application and
carrying of parachute, it must be of light weight, air resistance strength and can absorb sudden shocks during inflation. The design and deployment of the parachute should be
simple and reliable. It must be easy to manufacture so cost is low in comparison with where it is stored to decelerate and deliver [1]. The main consideration in aerodynamics
of parachute is given to the inflation mechanism and flight mechanics, such as the rate of system descent in a given type of application as paragliding, drag parachute etc.,
the drive and the lifting behaviour of the parachute. The safe working of parachute also considered the
