Challenges faced

Farmers
○ Low and inconsitent income/yield
○ Lack of agrcultural labour
○ Sub-optimial use of water and nutrient/fertilizer
○ Lack of and erratic electricity

Organizations
○ Lack of data on crop yield and quality, before hand
○ Lack of data on wether/climate conditions in case of insurers

Government
○ Lack of data to provide support to farmers in terms inputs like
right water, nutrients, pesticide

Improvement Area
Impact of over-irrigation – Crop Yield
decrease, Water can be saved

Figure 1. Corn yield response to different levels

of irrigation, including an over-irrigated plot
(irrigations were replenished at 125 percent of
the actual crop water use rate,
evapotranspiration) at the University of
Nebraska–Lincoln, South Central Agricultural
Laboratory near Clay Center, Neb. Plots were
irrigated using a subsurface drip irrigation
system.

What can be done?
Improving Water Use Efficiency

◍ Measure water used

◍ Surface water (Canal/River/Lake) as source can be used very
efficiently for co-operative/community based agriculture – Efficient
centralized pumps can used, water can be rationed based on
availability
◍ Ground water – Need to be measured and appropriate advisory can
be given for the right crop/water usage. Water can also be pumped
to a agriculture pond incase the borewells sponred by the
government. Pond can be used for distribution of water to multiple
farmers
◍ Soil based water scheduling – This can reduce the evaporation by
15-20%
◍ Soil Moisture and Weather based recommendation – This can
reduced the water usage by 15-20%
Improving Energy Use Efficiency

◍ Centralized water distrbution

■ Can use very efficient pumps
◍ Collecting the irrigation schedue and
managing them centrally helps in
load management which will
enhance effiency and avoid
overloading of grids
◍ Use pumps with duals source
(Solar/Grid) for reducing load on grid
Improving Crop Yield

◍ Crop yield improvement and Increase in Farmer Income

○ Precision irrigation based on Crop, Crop age, Soil type,
Weather
○ Will provide precision Nutrient management in second
phase – This will also reduce the cost of fertilizer
○ Will provide pest and disease management alerts in third
phase – This will help in reducing the losses

Value proposition

◍ Paddy
●AWD method will save 15-30% water in many
countries. Studies in Vietnam have shown that apart
from saving water, it also increased the yield by
15%.
◍Drip Irrigated Crops – Saves 70% over flood irrigation
◍IoT Based Smar irrigtion
●Water saving 15-25% \
