Chapter III

Research Design and Methodology

This chapter is divided into three parts: (1) Purpose of the study and Research

Design, (2) Methods, (3) Data Analysis Procedure.

The First Part, Purpose of the study and Research Design, restates the main problem

and discusses the research design .

The Second Part, Method, describes the participants, the data-gathering

instruments, and the data-gathering procedure used.

The Third Part, Data Analysis Procedure, enumerates the statistical tools used in

analysis of data.

Purpose of the Study and Research Design

This study focused on the Habitual Used of Alcoholic Beverages as correlates of

academic performance among Senior High School Students. This study used the survey-

correlational of research. According to Fraenkel and Wallen (2008), survey method is

where information is collected from a group in order to describe some aspects or

characteristics of the population of which group is a part of. On the other hand, correlational

study investigates the possibility of relationships between or among the variables. However

no manipulation of variables in this type of research design is expected (Frankel & Wallen,

2003). The study was conducted among the 200 respondents among Senior high school of

Capiz National High School, for school year 2019-2020.

In this study, the dependent variable was the habitual used of alcoholic beverages

as correlate of academic performance among students; the independent variables were the

age, gender, and general weighted average.

Methods

Participants

The participants of this investigation were the 526 respondents from the Capiz

National high school, senior high from school year 2019-2020. The 526 participants were

selected from the 1542 population of senior high school using Sloven formula. The

selection was done using stratified random sampling as shown in table 1 and table 2.

Table 2. Respondents for grade 12 senior high students

The respondents were randomly picked from the list of students, school year 2019-

2020 using the random numbers generated by the calculator.

Data Gathering Instruments

The data needed for the study were gathered using survey-questionnaire test. The

researcher prepared 30 items. Each test were face-validated of three (3) jurors who are

research teachers for a long time, the test was created by the researchers.
For the descriptive interpretation of mean score the table below was used:

Mean scores Description

0.10 – 1.00 Very High (VH)

1.10 – 2.00 High (H)

2.20 – 3.00 Moderately High (MH)

3.10 – 4.00 Low (L)

4.10 – 5.00 Very Low (VL)

Data Analysis Procedure

This researchers ask for permission to the Capiz National High School’s Principal

and Assistant Principal of Senior High School to allow the researchers to conduct a survey-

questionnaire at Grade 11 and 12 Students who was been wrote a letter to prepare ideas

and is respected if ever declined for to be answered the series of question that this

researchers prepared and the benefits that may avail after interview and assurance that the

respondents identity must stay confidential.

For the descriptive analyses of data, the frequency counts percentage were used in

age, gender, general weighted average ; while the mean and standard deviation were used

for the academic performance aspects.

These researchers will conduct a survey to collect data and knowledge information,

approaching the Habitual Drinking of Alcoholic Beverages as Correlate of Academic

Performance. The questions will be made and checked before it is used in the study.
