Chapter 1

Introduction

In this generation we live in a high technology generation, this is the

generation that some of our problem can be solved by the power of High –

technology devices like the Water Level Pump Detector. This product is made out

of a small electric motor that pumps up the water when the water level detector

detects that it reaches the maximum level of the flood water. This product can

help everyone in rainy situation most likely those who live near the shore or the

river.

According to Daniel Rubin (2015) in a world where probability is becoming

increasingly important, we are constantly looking for new and innovative ways to

add convenience to our lives. One of the most frustrating things that could happen

is that when it rains so badly and the house is below the ground the water could

easily go high and fill up the lower level of the house. In this product water will be

pumped out of the ground and to another reservoir or direction such as for

example river to a tank or another river. The researchers thought of this product

because here in the Philippines flood is becoming more and more common due to

there is two seasons, the rainy season and summer season.

STI- College Global City
Senior High School
Background of the Study

The researcher will conduct a study about the product named as the Water

level pump detector. The product detects water level (example: 10m, 5m, etc.)

and when the water level detector detects that it reaches the maximum height or

level it will then quickly suck up the extra water that is not needed. The product

could go bigger and bigger as we have the budget to product one big and working

product like this in the future. The researchers target consumer is Senior High

School ITMAWE and Computer Communication Technology strands. Although the

researcher could get resources from almost every strand with this product, the

researcher have had decided that we will focus on CCT and ITMAWE Senior High

School Students of STI College Global City because the researchers strand is

connected with technology, therefore the participants or the target of this research

have/has some knowledge about how technology works. A water level detector or

indicator may be defined as a system by which we can get the information of

water within the reservoir. Water Level indicator systems are quite useful to

reduce the wastage of water from any reservoir, while filling such reservoir. Water

level is indicated by led’s such as colour green and red. In this project the

researcher designed the product to measure water up to four levels.

Hypothesis

Null Hypothesis: The Water Level Pump Detector will not be effective and have no

effect on flooded areas because the product is not prepared enough to be actually

used in flooding situations.

Alternative Hypothesis: The Water level Pump Detector will be effective as a

service and a product because the product can be properly used in flood-prone

areas and it can properly detect the water level and pump out water effectively.

Scope and Limitations

This research is all about making a new improved device for the

community and the students. This product will make the work more convenient

when maintaining or either decreasing the level of water when there is some

unwanted situation such as flooding.

This study is not limited to anyone because the product is for

everyone or for anyone who would like to have one. On the off chance that it is

conceivable to make it greater and helpful for anyplace. The respondents that the

researchers are going to question are the Computer Communication Technology

and ITMAWE Senior High School Students of STI College Global City.

Review of Related Literature and Studies

This chapter presents the related literature and studies before the

comprehensive and in-Depth search done by the researchers. This will also

present the compound of the art, conjectural and conceptual framework to fully

understand the research to be done and lastly the definition of terms for better

comprehension of the study.

Related Literature

According to Zaity Syazwani Mohd Odli, Tengku Nuraiti Tengku Izhar,

Abdul Rahim Abdul Razak, Sara Yasina Yusuf, Irnis Azura Zakarya, Farah

Naemah Mohd Saad, Mohd Zaim Mohd Nor (2016) article about the

“Development of Portable Water Level Sensor for Flood Management System” the

early warning systems for flood management have been developed rapidly with

growth of technologies and will help alert the people early. Many has proposed

that the system used to alert people of floods should be used through the use of

short message service, however this system is still too complex to program. And

the proposed model to be used determines water levels using ranging sensors.

This device will then be powered from the rechargeable batteries. And based on

Sood, Kaur, and Lenka (2013) article “Automatic Water Level Controller” stated

that prominence on the need of water level controller in irrigation in agriculture. In

here they used a technique that will measure flow rate of water in irrigation
STI- College Global City

pipelines. It uses a Hall Effect Sensor to measure the rate flow. It also states that

every crop require different amount of water and this can be done by using

automatic water level controller which will also help in reducing wastage of water.

According to Jaehyoung Yu Harnsoo Han (2006) explained the

monitoring water level in a river or in a reservoir is important in the applications

related to agriculture, flood prevention and fishing industry et al. The schemes

developed for measuring water level can be categorized as 4 types based on

measuring features such as pressure, supersonic waves, heat, and image. Dan

Opel, Erika Lee Hagstrom, Aaron K Pace, Krisanne Sisto, Stefanie A Hirano-Ali,

Shraddha Desai, James Swan explained that the biological significance of light-

emitting diodes was realized. Since this discovery, various light sources have

been investigated for their cutaneous effects. A Medline search was performed on

light-emitting diode lights and their therapeutic effects between 1996 and 2010.

Additionally, an open-label, investigator-blinded study was performed using a

yellow light-emitting diode device to treat acne, rosacea, photoaging, alopecia

areata, and androgenetic alopecia. The authors identified several case-based

reports, small case series, and a few randomized controlled trials evaluating the

use of four different wavelengths of light-emitting diodes. These devices were

classified as red, blue, yellow, or infrared, and covered a wide range of clinical

applications. The 21 patients the authors treated had mixed results regarding

patient satisfaction and pre- and post-treatment evaluation of improvement in

clinical appearance.

Local Studies

This study conducted by Alden B. Almaden, Mary Ann O. Beringuil, Lovena

P. Jalandoni, Michael D. Nono, Analyn G. Ranalan (2012) aimed to construct an

auto filler tank that could be controlled by a stand-alone circuit that has a water-

level indicator. The device would automatically fill the tank when the water level

was at its minimum and would also automatically close the inlet when the water

level was at its maximum. Auke idzengan (2012) he helps to set up the alternative

indigenous development foundation inc. he developed and promoted the hydraulic

ram pump technology that provides clean affordable water. A tool that can help

lessen the people being affected by floods is a needed, in a article by

worldbank.org (2017) stated that the Philippines ranks third among countries most

at risk for disasters, including floods, storms, and earthquakes. In the past 30

years, more than 360 disasters struck the Philippines, with a total death toll of

33,000 people which affected 120 million people. Typhoons and floods are the

most devastating in terms of their economic and social impact, accounting for 80

percent of all deaths, 90 percent of the total number of affected people, and 92

percent of the total economic impact. Elmer Granadozo Bautista, Nguyen Thanh

Nghi, Masanori Saito, Manuel Jose, Cajayon Regalado (2015) in their literature

water pumping and electricity generation have been an important point of interest

in the world today. This study was aimed to examine the actual performance of a

locally designed wind-pump system installed in Tarlac, central Luzon, Philippines,

and to evaluate its potential using a 10-year (2004-2013) weather data, and to
STI- College Global City
Senior High School
assess the input-output energy of the wind-pump system. Field tests showed that

the daily discharge of the wind-pump system fl uctuated from 0.7 m 3 day-1 to

22.1 m 3 day-1 with an average of 9.2 m 3 day-1. Based upon the relationship

between wind speed and discharge of the wind-pump system, annual average

daily wind speed of 1.78 m s-1 in Nueva Ecija, central Luzon, Philippines will

make it possible to discharge 8.38 m 3 day-1 of water with the wind pump. The

potential of the wind-pump estimated from an average of 10-year weather data

showed that the highest daily water output was in December with daily average of

7.34 mm d-1, and that the lowest was in August with an average daily output of

1.27 mm d-1. An average pumping output during dry season (December to

March) was estimated to be 14.13 m 3 day-1 which was far below for irrigating 1

hectare of rice field. The energy output was computed from the water output of the

wind-pump system which was assumed to be used for 20 years. The energy input

and output of the wind-pump system was 25.0 GJ and 37.5 GJ, respectively.

Foreign Studies

Thoma and Kittredge (1931) were trying to evaluate the complete

characteristics of pumps; they accidentally found that pumps could be operated

very efficiently in the turbine mode. The turbine mode operation became an

important research question for many manufacturers as pumps were prone to

abnormal operating conditions. In later years, chemical industries became another

area for the application of PATs for energy recovery. Even in water supply
STI- College Global City
Senior High School
networks identical applications of this technology were found. This background

gave some momentum to a rich phase of research and then onwards, standard

manufactured pumps were studied in turbine mode. In later years, many more

techniques were developed by many researchers (Rawal and Kshirsagar, 2007).

McDaniel (2012) stated that floods are the second-most widespread natural

disaster on Earth. It happens when water overflows or soaks land that is normally

dry. There are few places on Earth where people don’t need to be concerned

about flooding. Generally, floods take hours or even days to develop, giving

residents time to prepare or evacuate. Sometimes, floods develop quickly and

with little warning. Flooding may result from the volume of water within a body of

water, such as a river or lake, which overflows or breaks levees, with the result

that some of the water escapes its usual boundaries, or may be due to

accumulation of rainwater on saturated ground in an area flood. It can also arise

from abnormal heavy precipitation, dam failures, rapid snow melts, river

blockages (Mwape, 2009). Floods are among the most dramatic forms of

interaction between man and its environment. They are always associated with

heavy loses of life and property, misery hardship disease and at times, famine.

Some examples of natural causes are heavy rainfall and overflowing of river

banks which usually results to perennial flooding (Devalsam, 2011). In a research

by Inyiama and Obota (2013) it stated that the efficient monitoring and control of

water level which however represents an important input on flood prevention and

control is realized. This technology, if wisely deployed, could prevent or reduce

STI- College Global City
Senior High School
the incessant flooding and its attendant hazards on the populace. The benefit of

this design can be extended to other control systems e.g. irrigation control, oil

spillage control etc. Anna Emiliawati studied that a small-scale water pump which

is effective to lift more discharge is generally used. The ones that are most

preferred are centrifugal types which having low absorbability. Pump performance

is limited by

pressure level in real electrical power whereas pump efficiency is influenced by

head and discharge.

Theoretical Framework

The researcher came up with an idea that may help the issue that has been yet to

be resolved. If a water level detector could have an added function to further

improve its effectiveness in reducing the casualties or people that are being

affected in floods.

Connecting another wire that is connected to the water level detector with a pump

so that when the water is in a certain level the pump will activate along with the

red led so that the device will be able to inform and at the same time the product

will be able to reduce the water level automatically.

Methodology

In this chapter we explain how the study is constructed by the researchers

and what methods we use to gather the data that we needed to the respondents.

This study is a quantitative research according to Babbie (2010) it emphasize

objective measurements and the statistical, mathematical, or numerical analysis

of data collected through polls, questionnaires, and surveys, or by manipulating

pre-existing statistical data using computational techniques. This method allows

the researchers to get the facts. The researchers choose this research because

it’s great for generalizing results from a large sample population and is great for

getting facts and not abstract.

The method that we use to gathered data from the respondents is a survey

method; we want to know the opinion of the respondents to the product and

according to Sincero (2012) one of the advantages of the survey method is that

it’s fast and reliable to gathered data from the respondents. The respondents are

grade 11 and 12 Computer Communication Technology and Information

Technology, Mobile app and Web Development students of STI College Global

City and the total respondents are 243 students will be eligible to take the survey.
STI- College Global City

Research Design

The research design represents the major methodological thrust of

the study, being the distinctive and specific approach, which is best suited to

answer the research questions. The researchers used the Descriptive Method as

their research design to properly gather information. The research questions, the

aim and the objectives of the study thus influence the selection of the research

design. Quantitative research is the type of research that the researchers used in

this study. This type of research is fitted for this study because we want to know

how efficient, effective, and helpful the product to the respondents. The

researchers also choose quantitative research because it’s great for it makes use

of measurable data to conclude facts and get the truthful opinions of the grade 11

and 12 Computer Communication Technology and Information Technology,

Mobile app and Web Development students to the Water Level Pump Detector

and can help the researchers clarify how efficient and effective the product is.

Research Instrumentation and Technique

The researchers used a Survey to properly gather data and get answers

from the respondents that they chose. The researchers chose the Survey method

as it seemed most appropriate to collect data. Questionnaire is the research tool

that we had used to gather the data from our respondents. According to (McLeod,

2018) questionnaire is a research instrument consisting of a series of questions

for the purpose of gathering information from respondents. Questionnaires can be

STI- College Global City
Senior High School
thought of as a kind of written interview. We use this tool is because it’s a reliable

and fast to get the information that we needed to the study. This helps us to

gather the data faster and accurate from the respondents. The researchers made

a self-administered questionnaire to gather data to get the quantitative data of this

study. The main target of the questionnaire is to find out the opinions of Computer

Communication Technology and Information Technology, Mobile app and Web

Development students on their thoughts on the product and if the respondents

think that it will be applicable during floods in their area. This research will only

use closed questions and it is a use to match the respondents answer rather than

copying down the same words given by the respondents.

Data Gathering

After selecting the research respondents the researchers will make a

consent form for the School Admin and for the affected Teachers. The

researchers will explain to the teachers what our product is. The researcher also

explain what are the nature and the purpose of the study, this is our first phase.

The second phase is where the researchers agreed to the policy that has been

talked about by the teachers due to the concerns of the school. Before we start

the instruction of each test used in the study is made clear. We make sure to

follow school procedures. In order to get the free, unique, honest answers from

our respondents, we make sure that there are no right and wrong answers in the
STI- College Global City
Senior High School
questionnaire and we make it confidential. The researchers will try to make it

confidential as the answers should only be used in research purposes.

The next thing the researchers will do is to let the entire grade 11

and 12 Computer Communication Technology and Information Technology,

Mobile app and Web Development students of STI Global City to answer the

survey test that the researcher made to know how effective “Water Level Pump

Detector” as a useful service when flooding. The researchers demonstrate the

functions and explain how useful and of help this product is during floods.

Population and Sampling

This study will be conducted among the grade 11 and 12 Computer

Communication Technology and Information Technology, Mobile app and Web

Development students of the STI Global City who is enrolled during the school

year 2019 – 2020. There are a total of 269 students from grade 11 and 12

Information, Technology, Mobile App, Web Development and Computer

Communication Technology. But to get an adequate sampling of the total

population Slovin’s equation was utilized as follows:

N = n / [1+[n(e)^2]]

Where:

N = size of the sample

n = size of the population

e = margin of error
STI- College Global City
Senior High School

The total respondents for all Information Technology, Mobile App, Web

Development and Computer Communication Technology will be 243.

The researchers used random sampling technique for the respondents to

have an equal and independent chance of being selected for the sample. The

researchers selected the respondents who were present on the class and willing

to answer the survey questionnaire. In case of irregular students who were

enrolled in more than one section, they could only participate once.

81 the respondent’s lives in a high-altitude area. Most of the respondents live in

low-altitude areas. This means that most of them have a problem on flooding

because they don’t live on areas that are above flooding.

Table 3.3

Questionnaire Yes No
Does your drainage 176 67

system of your area

often clog?

Interpretation and analysis:

As represented in the table 3.3 of the respondents will often have their

drainage system in their area, while the drainage system of the other 67 of the

respondents doesn’t often clog. Most of the Barangays that our respondents live

in seem to be prone to flooding because their Drainage System gets clogged

when flooding breaks out.

Table 3.4

Questionnaire Yes No
Is there an evacuation 223 20

area in your barangay?

Interpretation and analysis:

As represented in table 3.4, 223 of the respondents has an evacuation

area in their barangay, while 20 of the respondents doesn’t have an evacuation

area in their barangay. Most of the respondents live in Barangays that have an

evacuation area but a small minority of them don’t which can prove to be a fatal

mistake if their Barangay actually suffer a major flooding.

Chapter 5

This section shows the summary, findings, conclusions, and

recommendations on the study pertaining to the Effectiveness of the Water Level

Pump Detector.

Conclusion

According to the feedback of the respondents, the device is effective as

most of the objectives have been met. The effectiveness of the device can be

seen through the reduction of the water levels. With the prototype and the

illustration, the researchers were able to show the product’s capabilities. The

respondents gave the researchers a positive feedback on how effective the

product is in an event of a flood but many of the respondents are uncertain or

disagree if the product is actually durable enough in the event of harsh weather.

The majority of the respondents agree that the product could be used in a variety

of flood prone areas with a small minority of them being either uncertain or

disagree entirely that the product could be used. Most of the respondents seem to

agree that the product’s price is reasonable but a good percentage of the

respondents are uncertain about the price of the product. Most of the respondents

also agree that the product is small enough to fit on sidewalks without actually

taking up too much space but a good number of the respondents are also unsure

about the product because sidewalks tend to vary on size and width.

Recommendations

The research that the researchers did is mostly focused on floods and water

levels. Here are some possible future research topics that could be made based

on this research:

The Effects of Flooding on the Livelihood of People Living in Flood-Prone Areas.

The Impact of a Water Level Detector on Evacuation Efforts on Flood-Prone

Areas.

The Effects of the Integration of a Water Control System in a Residency.

The Effects of a Water Control System on the Infrastructure of a Small Residency.

The Effectiveness of a Water Level Indicator in Risk Reduction in Flood-Prone

Areas.

The Effectiveness of a Water Pump in Reducing Water Levels in Flooded areas.

These are the possible research topics that can be based on the research that the

researchers have done. These topics are related to the research that has been

done due to how they are mostly based on water levels and flooding thus this

research will prove useful to future researchers that plan to do research on topics

involving water levels, flood, risk reduction and Water Control System and Pumps.

Summary

This study will focus on how effective the water level pump detector can be

in the events of a flood if it can detect the water level and if it can reduce the water

level at the at the area that the product is placed in. This product will help the

masses in the events of a flood or when the drainage of their area is clogged and

water is building up in their residency.
