UX Terminology Cheat-Sheet

CTA

Call to action (CTA) is a marketing term used extensively in advertising and selling. It refers to any device designed to prompt an immediate response or encourage an immediate sale. A CTA most often refers to the use of words or phras- es that can be incorporated into sales scripts, advertising messages or web pages that encourage consumers to take prompt action.

User Acquisition

Customer acquisition is the process of bringing new custom- ers or clients to your business. The goal of this process is to create a systematic, sustainable acquisition strategy that can evolve with new trends and changes. Customer acquisition is important for businesses of any age and size.

User Activation

User activation is the state of a browsing session with respect to user actions: an “active” state typically implies either the user is currently interacting with the page, or has completed an interaction since page load.

CTR

Click-through rate (CTR) is an incredibly important concept in search engine marketing. The simplest definition is that click-through rate is the percentage of people who click on your ad after seeing your ad. (In mathematical terms: CTR = Clicks/Impressions.)

UX Terminology Cheat-Sheet

Conversion Rate

The conversion rate is the number of conversions divided by the total number of visitors. For example, if an ecommerce site receives 200 visitors in a month and has 50 sales, the conversion rate would be 50 divided by 200, or 25%. A con- version can refer to any desired action that you want the user to take.

CAC

CAC stands for customer acquisition cost. A company’s CAC is the total sales and marketing cost required to earn a new customer over a specific time period.

LP (Landing Page)

In digital marketing, a landing page is a standalone web page, created specifically for the purposes of a marketing or advertising campaign. It’s where a visitor “lands” when they have clicked on a Google AdWords ad or similar.

Landing pages are designed with a single focused

objective – known as a Call to Action (CTA).

ROI

ROI stands for return on investment and is usually expressed as a percentage and is typically used for personal financial decisions, to compare a company’s profitability or to com- pare the efficiency of different investments.

ROAS

ROAS (Return On Advertisement Spending) is a KPI (Key Performance Indicator) that is used to determine media ef- fectiveness. It can be calculated for online and offline media campaigns.

UX Terminology Cheat-Sheet

Retention Rate

Retention rate is measuring how many customers your com- pany retains at the end of a given period, how many new cus- tomers you got and the number of customers who left your company.

Churn Rate

Your churn rate is the amount of customers or subscribers who cut ties with your service or company during a given time period. These customers have “churned.”

Daily Active Users (DAU)

Daily active users (DAU) is a measurement of how many users take an action within a website or app on a daily basis. Many startups and investors consider DAU to be a critical measure of product stickiness and growth. Measured alone, however, it can conceal hidden trends and is best analyzed in concert with other metrics.

Cost Per Acquisition (CPA)

Cost per acquisition (CPA), also known as cost per action, pay per acquisition (PPA) and cost per conversion (CPC), is an online advertising pricing model where the advertiser pays for a specified acquisition – for example a sale, click, or form submit (e.g., contact request, newsletter sign up, registration etc.)

Lifetime Value (LTV)

In marketing, customer lifetime value (CLV or often CLTV), lifetime customer value (LCV), or life-time value (LTV) is a prediction of the net profit attributed to the entire future relationship with a customer.
