1. Problem based on Nernst Equation:

1) A copper- silver cell is set up. The copper ion concentration in it is 0.10M. The
concentration of silver ion in it is not known. The cell potential measured is 0.422V.
Determine the concentration of silver ion in the cell.

(EO Ag+/Ag=+0.80V, E° Cu2+/Cu=0.34V )

2) A voltaic cell is set up at 250 C with the following half cells:

Write the equation for the cell reaction that occurs when the cell generates an
electric current and determine the cell potential.

(Given E0 (Ni2+/Ni) = -0.25 V, E0 (Al3+/Al) = -1.66 V)

3) The cell in which the following reaction occurs:

has Ecell= 0.236V at 298K.Calculate the standard Gibbs energy of the cell reaction.

3. Problem based on Gibb’s Free Energy:

5) Calculate the standard cell potentials of galvanic cell in which the following reaction
take place:
2Cr(s) + 3Cd2+(aq) → 2Cr3+(aq) + 3Cd
Also calculate the ΔrG0 value for the reaction.

Given E0(Cr3+/Cr) = -0.74 V ; E0 ( Cd2+/Cd) = -0.40 V , F= 96500 C mol-1)

4. Problem based on Equilibrium Constant:

log Kc = (n x E°cell / 0.0591)

6) Calculate ΔG0 and log Kc for the following reaction at 298 K:

Given : E0 cell = 2.02 V

5. Problem based on Molar conductivity:

7) The conductivity of 0.001 mol L-1 solution of CH3COOH is 3.905 × 10-5 S cm-1. Calculate its
molar conductivity and degree of dissociation(α).

Given λ0(H+) = 349.6 S cm2mol-1 and λ0(CH3COO-) = 40.9 S cm2 mol-1


8) Conductivity of 0.00241 M acetic acid is 7.896 × 10–5 S cm–1. Calculate its molar
conductivity and if limiting molar conductivity for acetic acid is 390.5 S cm2 mol–1, what is its
dissociation constant?

9) Limiting molar conductivity for NaCl, HCl and NaAc are 126.4, 425.9 and 91.0 S cm2
mol–1 respectively. Calculate limiting molar conductivity for HAc.

6. Problem based on Cell constant and specific conductance:

Conductance (G) = 1/ Resistance (R)

10) The resistance of 0.01N NaCl solution at 250C is 200 ohm. Cell constant of conductivity
cell is unity. Calculate the molar conductance of the solution.

11) The resistance of a conductivity cell containing 0.001M KCl solution at 298K is 1500Ω.
What is the cell constant if the conductivity of 0.001M KCl solution at 298K is 0.146×10-3 S
cm-1
7. Problem based on Faraday’s law:

12) Three electrolytic cells A,B,C containing solutions of ZnSO4, AgNO3 and CuSO4, )
respectively are connected in series. A steady current of 1.5 amperes was passed
through them until 1.45 g of silver deposited at the cathode of cell B. How long did the
current flow? What mass of copper and zinc were deposited?
13) Calculate the time to deposit 1.17 g of Ni at cathode when a current of 5 A was passed
through the solution of Ni(NO3)2. ( Molar mass of Ni=58.5 g mol-1, 1F = 96500 C mol-1)

14) When a current of 0.75A is passed through a CuSO4 solution for 25 min, 0.369 g of
copper is deposited at the cathode. Calculate the atomic mass of copper.
