Max. Marks: 100
Note: Answer all questions

1 Read the passage carefully and answer the questions given below it.

At the Harvard Negotiation Project we have been developing a new method of

negotiation explicitly designed to produce good results efficiently and amicably. This
method, called principled negotiations or negotiations on the merits, can be boiled
down to four basic points.

The first point recognizes that human beings are not computers. People have strong
emotions, often see things very differently, and do not always communicate clearly.
In negotiation it often happens that emotions get mixed up with the objective rights
and wrongs of the situation. Taking up a fixed position makes this worse because
people’s personalities become identified with their positions. So before the actual
negotiation begins we need to distinguish between personal differences and
differences over solutions to the problem.

The second point distinguish between what people say they want, their stated
positions, and what they really want, their underlying interests. Negotiating positions
often hide what you really want. A compromise between two positions is not likely to
produce an agreement which satisfies the need underlying each position.

The third point acknowledges the problem of having to find a perfect solution while
you’re under pressure. Making up your mind in the presence of your opponent
restricts your ideas. Deciding on something very important or trying to find the
perfect answer limits creative thought. You can get around these limitations by
arranging a set amount of time to think up a wide range of possible solutions which
help both sides and creatively bring them together.

When both sides find that their interests are directly opposed, one negotiator may try
to win simply by being stubborn. However, you can respond to such tactics by
insisting that his/her opinion alone is not enough and that some fair independent
standard is needed. This does not mean that you yourself select the independent
standard, rather that both of you decide on one, such as market value expert opinion,
or law. By discussing such criteria neither side need give in to the other.

Briefly answer the following questions:

1a What situation is created when emotions intrude into the negotiation process? 2
1b People do not always state what they desire. What do they do instead? Discuss. 2
1c Negotiators need to have a fixed ‘time-alone’ period. Why? 2
1d Why does it often become necessary to consult a specialist in the process of
negotiation? Who should these people be? 2

1. Read the following passage and make notes in an appropriate format. (15)

Chocolate. There are few foods that people feel as passionate about – a passion that goes
beyond a love for the “sweetness” of most candies or desserts: after all, few people crave
caramel, whipped cream, or bubble gum. Chocolate is, well, different. For the true chocoholic,
just thinking about chocolate can evoke a pleasurable response.

Two years ago, my wife and I travelled to the Amazon. On one of our expeditions, our guide
pointed out a cacao tree growing wild in the jungle. I had never seen one before.

Looking strangely alien, dozens of yellow-green pods hung from the trunk and stems of the
tree. Our guide picked one of the hand-sized fruits, stripped off the rippled outer layer with his
knife, and handed us chunks of the fibrous white pulp inside – the fruit of the cacao tree. Two
local children who had followed us into the forest waited impatiently for their own turn. With
practiced hands, a girl of about six borrowed the guide’s knife, hacked off the covering from
another pod, and shared a big chunk of pulp with her brother.

Few people get to sample the fruit of the cacao tree. It was mild tasting, with a subtle,
bittersweet chocolate flavour. Embedded in the pulp were dark, purple-colored seeds that,
after being dried and processed, chocolate lovers like myself have come to recognize as
“chocolate beans.”

The cacao tree (Theobroma cacao) is a native of Central and South America. Today, it is
cultivated around the equator, and can be found in the Caribbean, Africa, South-East Asia, and
even in the South Pacific Islands of Samoa and New Guinea.

By the beginning of the sixteenth century, the Aztecs had an advanced and powerful civilization
located in what is now central Mexico. Many people believe that the Aztecs first developed

chocolate. However, chocolate goes back much farther. The ancient Maya, who inhabited what
is now parts of southern Mexico and Central America, certainly consumed chocolate. In fact,
the word “cacao” is Mayan: as early as 500 A.D., the Mayans were writing about cacao on their
pottery. Some think chocolate may be even older, dating back to the Olmec civilization that
preceded the Maya.
The chocolate of these Mesoamerican civilizations was consumed as a bitter-tasting drink made
of ground cacao beans mixed with a variety of local ingredients, a drink that was said to build
up resistance and fight fatigue.

Answer all the questions

1 Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow:

A lot of people are involved with nature conservation, taking care of the plants and
animals which share the planet. Until the beginning of the 20th century, people thought
we could conserve nature by looking after individual species by putting wild animals in
zoos, or plants in botanical gardens. Now we understand that we need to conserve whole
habitats, the places where these plants and animals live.
Polar bears may be able to survive as individual animals in concrete pools in Zoos. But to
conserve the species properly they each need hundreds of square kilometers of Arctic
landscape where they can hunt in seas free from pollution and roam across snowfields
that are not disturbed by people. Nearer home, hedgehogs need a whole neighbourhood to
live in, with quiet leafy corners for hibernation, and plenty of undergrowth where they
can hunt for slugs and worms, without any danger of eating poisonous chemicals.
We can grow primroses in plant pots, but to conserve these wildflowers properly, we
need to conserve the woodlands where they grow naturally. Nature reserves are important
for providing a safe environment for wildlife, but nature conservation can take place
anywhere.
Lots of people are creating new habitats such as ponds and wildflower meadows, in
gardens and school grounds. In fact some species thrive best in special artificial habitats.
Many starlings, for instance, spend the cold winter nights roosting on the windowsills of
centrally heated office blocks in towns, and then feed all day on the grubs and worms that
live in the soil beneath school playing fields, sports pitches and parks. Most of the
wildflowers we call weeds can survive only if a farmer or a gardener cultivates the soil
and accidentally makes a new seed bed for them each year.
