EXTERIOR DECKING INSTALLATION BASICS

1 Solid supporting structure
2 Correct joist spacing
3 Install the fasteners correctly.
Structure must be solidly designed according to SABS Specs.
Do not exceed the joist and bearer spacing.
Supporting beams (joists) must be: 450mm or less for 19mm or 22mm Decking 600mm or less for
32mm Decking. DO NOT USE WIDER SPACING !
Choose the correct fastener for the timber and DO NOT SKIP FASTENERS: 2 screws at every joist.

ALL DECKING MUST BE OILED after installation and reapplied when dry.
4 Oil your deck
Do NOT use a surface sealing varnish or sealer. We recommend easy to use Galseal® Timber sealer.

INTERIOR FLOORING INSTALLATION BASICS

1 Solid supporting structure

The structure must be solidly designed according to SABS Specs according to the intended load. Alternatively when laying flooring on battens, these
must be installed securely. Do not exceed the joist and bearer spacing. Poor performing, creaky and springy flooring can mostly be attributed to a
poorly designed and constructed support structure.

2 Correct joist spacing

Supporting beams (joists) must be: 450mm or less for 22mm Flooring.

3 Ensure moisture barrier is sound

It is vital to ensure that the moisture content is correct BEFORE installation. A moisture barrier must be installed (eg plastic) to prevent uneven moisture
contents above and below the floor.

4 Install and seal your floor correctly

Use a reputable sanding company to sand and seal your pine or hardwood floor.

Quality timber
Our structural timber is sourced DIRECT from the Southern Cape plantations which produce the best quality structural pine in South
Africa. The majority of our structural timber is FSC certified from sustainable plantations.
CCA Treatment
CCA is the standard water based preservative treatment prescribed by law on all timber used in construction. It imparts a
green/brown colour to the timber.
Clear treatment
SABS Azure H2 Treatment on structural is available on order. This requires a lead time of approximately 3-5 days.
Untreated structural is also available ex stock or on order.
Planing of timber
We select untreated timber and plane it to SABS specifications or your required size.
Standard planing sizes: 32x32mm, 32x44mm, 32x70mm, 32x108mm, 32x144mm, 32x220mm, 44x70mm, 44x144mm, 44x220mm, 70x220mm
After planing your order is treated to the required specification.
This is done on order only and requires a lead time of approximately 3-14 days depending on raw material availability.

TAKE SABS 457 specification states that tapered poles are classed (measured) on the THIN end of the pole only.

NOTE A 80-99mm pole will measure between 80mm and 99mm on the THIN end.
The thick end is not measured and may be thicker due to natural taper of timber poles which varies.

CORRECT METHOD OF PLANTING POLES

 If a treated pole or post is planted in the ground it is essential that you

allow for drainage of rainwater.
 Do not enclose the planted end of the post in the concrete.
 If you need to use concrete then let the concrete form a collar around
the post with the end protruding through the concrete.
 If you plant the post on concrete at the bottom of the hole, let the
concrete set before planting the post.
