Henri Fayol-Managerial activities (planning,organising,command,coordination and control).

Henry Faud’s contribution to management theory is certainly remarkable. He gave overall


concepts of general management and suggested the basic functions of managemen. He gave
overall concepts of general management and suggested the basic functions of management.
He recommended the selection and training of workers and managers.

Henri Fayol is best remembered for his contribution to school of management thought.

First, Fayol believed that organizational and business life was an amalgam of six activities –
technical, commercial, financial security, accounting and management (Fayol, 1949, Parker
and Ritson, 2005b, Bakewell 1931)

Fayol’s contribution to management can be discussed under the following four heads.

Division of industrial activities : Fayol observed the organizational functioning from


managers point of view.

He found that all activities of the industrial enterprise could be divided into six groups

i. Technical (relating to production)


ii. Commercial (buying,selling and exchanges)
iii. Financial (search for capital and its optimum use)
iv. Security (protection of property and persons accounts, returns etc)
v. Managerial (planning, organization,command,coordination and control)

He pointed out that these activities exist in every enterprise. He further said that the first five
activities are well known to manager and consequently devoted most of his book to analyse
managerial activities.

Qualities of an effective manager: Henri Fayol was the first person to recognise the different
qualities for manager.

According to him these qualities are;

i. Physical (health, vigour and address)


ii. Mental (ability to understand and learn judgement, mental vigour, and
adaptability)
iii. Moral (energy,firmness,willingness to accept responsibilities initiative, loyalty,
tact and dianity)
iv. Educational (acquaintance) with matters related to general functioning
v. Technical perculiar to the functions being performed
vi. Experience (arising from the work)
Functions of Management

Frederick Taylor used his engineering background to develop his scientific management
theory. He believed that the used of engineering principles would lead to a reduction of waste
and an increase in production and efficiently that would benefit not only the business but
employees and society in general.

Role of Board of Directors

Determine the company’s vision and mission to guide and set the pace for its current
operations and future development

Determine the values to be promoted throughout the company

Determine and review company goals

Determine company policies

Responsibilities of Directors

The directors must always exercise their powers for a proper purpose-that is in furtherance of
the reason for which they were given those powers by the shareholders

Directors must act with due skill and cave

Directors must consider the interests of employees of the company
