Requirements for various types of Tubesheet
U-Tube Fixed Tubesheet

Requirements Clause No.

Refer UHX-12

Refer figure UHX-12.1

Tubesheet shall be flat and circular

Tubesheet shall be of uniform thickness except at the

tubesheet extension as calculated as per UHX-9.
OD, A used for tubesheet Calculations shall not exceed
the diameter at which the thickness of tubesheet
extension is less than minimum(0.75 x tubesheet
thickness (h), h-10 mm).

Tubesheet shall be uniformly perforated by equilateral

triangular or square patterns. Untubed lanes are
permitted for pass partitions.

Channel component integral with tubesheet shall be a

cylinder or hemispherical head (refer Fig. UHX-10). Also
there shall be no cylindrical sections between head and
the tubesheet. Tangent line shall coincide the adjacent
face of the tubesheet.

Tube side and shell side pressures are assumed to be

uniform. No pressure drop and weight loading is
considered.

Design or operating pressure including the static head

shall be the applicable pressure on the shell or channel
side.

Design rules are based on fully assembled heat

exchangers.

Table UHX-12.4-1 provides the load combinations

required to evaluate the heat exchanger. When Psd,
min and Ptd, min are zero, Case-4 shall not be
considered.
When the differenetial pressure is specified by the user,
the design shall be based only on the loading case-3.
If tube side pressure is higher pressure side, then Pt
shall be tubes side design pressure and Ps = Pt - diff.
pressure.
If shell side pressure is higher pressure side, then Ps
shall be tubes side design pressure and Pt = Ps - diff.
pressure.

For tubesheet bending stress σ<= 2S, where S is the

allowable stress for tubesheet at design temp. as given
in UG-23.

For Total Axial stress in Channel or shell

σs < = 1.5 Ss
σc < = 1.5 Sc
where Ss and Sc is the allowable stress for shell /
channel at design temp. as given in UG-23.

Average shear stress, τ <= Min. (0.8 S, 0.533 Sy) where

Sy is yield strength of tubesheet material at design
temp.

Applicable for calculations are per simply supported U-

Tube tubesheet.
For configurations a
For configurations a, e, f:

Increase the Tubesheet thickness (h)

Increase the integral Shell / Channel thickness.

For configurations a, b, c: If σs > 1.5 Ss
For configurations a, e, f: If σc > 1.5 Sc

Perform a simplified elastic-plastic calculations by using

a reduced effective modulus for the integral shell /
channel. However, this may result in higher tubesheet
bending stress.
Analyse the tubesheet as simply supported i.e.
calculating tubesheet thickness without considering the
effect of the stiffness of the integral shell / channel.

For configuration a: This option can be used only when

σs < = 1.5 SPS,s and σc < = 1.5 SPS,c
If σs > 1.5 Ss replace Es with Es*= Es (1.5 Ss/σs )^0.5
and recalculate kc and λs
If σc > 1.5 Sc replace Ec with Ec*= Ec (1.5 Sc/σc )^0.5
and recalculate kc and λc

For configuration b, c : This option can be used only

when σs < = 1.5 SPS,s. Clause UHX 13.9
If σs > 1.5 Ss replace Es with Es*= Es (1.5 Ss/σs )^0.5
and recalculate kc and λs

For configuration e, f: This option can be used only

when σc < = 1.5 SPS,c
If σc > 1.5 Sc replace Ec with Ec*= Ec (1.5 Sc/σc )^0.5
and recalculate kc and λc

Perform Step.10 for calculating the stresses in the shell

and channel except the following steps,
For configuration a, b and c shell need not be of
minimum length requirement as mentioned in UHX
12.5.10.
For configuration a, e and f channel need not be of
minimum length requirement as mentioned in UHX
12.5.10.

Increase the Tubesheet thickness (h)
Increase the integral Shell / Channel thickness.
For configurations a, b, c: If σs > 1.5 Ss, Increase the
shell thickness
For configurations a : If σc > 1.5 Sc, Increase the
channel thickness

Perform a simplified elastic-plastic calculations as

defined in UHX-13.7 by using a reduced effective
modulus for the integral shell / channel. However,
due to load shifting this may result in higher
tubesheet bending stress.
Analyse the tubesheet as simply supported i.e.
calculating tubesheet thickness without considering
the effect of the stiffness of the integral shell /
channel.

Use different shell material and thickness adjacent

to the Tubesheet. (Using shell bands)
