There are 14 punctuation marks that are commonly used in English grammar. They are the
period, question mark, exclamation point, comma, semicolon, colon, dash, hyphen, parentheses,
brackets, braces, apostrophe, quotation marks, and ellipsis. Following their correct usage will
make your writing easier to read and more appealing.
PERIOD, QUESTION MARK, EXCLAMATION POINT (Sentence Endings)
Three of the fourteen punctuation marks are appropriate for use as sentence endings. They are
the period, question mark, and exclamation point.
The period (.) is placed at the end of declarative sentences, statements thought to be complete
and after many abbreviations.
As a sentence ender: Jane and Jack went to the market.
After an abbreviation: Her son, John Jones Jr., was born on Dec. 6, 2008.
Use a question mark (?) to indicate a direct question when placed at the end of a sentence.
When did Jane leave for the market?
The exclamation point (!) is used when a person wants to express a sudden outcry or add
emphasis.
Within dialogue: "Holy cow!" screamed Jane.
To emphasize a point: My mother-in-law's rants make me furious!
1. ampersand ( & ) Use the ampersand symbol in sentences in place of the word
"and."
The ampersand symbol should only be used in very informal writing such as a
friendly letter or email, texts, tweets, memos, rough drafts, class notes and journal
writing.
Examples:
Bill & I would like you to come to our house for supper on Sunday.
2. asterisk ( * ) The word "asterisk" comes from the Latin word "asteriscus" and
the Greek word "asterikos" meaning "little star." Use an asterisk or asterisks to
indicate a footnote at the bottom of the page.
If there are multiple footnotes (more than one), use one asterisk for the first
footnote, two asterisks for the second and so on.
*first footnote
**second footnote
***third footnote
Be sure that footnotes at the bottom of the page match the asterisks in the
original text.
3. at sign ( @ ) The at sign looks like a lowercase letter "a" surrounded by an open
circle ( @ ). Some common names for the at sign in the English language are:
at sign
commercial at
commercial a
apetail
at
about
4. bullet ( • ) Bullets are used in place of numbers when the order of the items in the
list is not important. Numbered lists are used for recipes and other instructions
because the order of the items is important.
5. degree symbol ( ° ) Use the degree symbol for temperatures in Celsius (C) and
Fahrenheit (F)
Fahrenheit is the temperature scale that is used in the United States. It is abbreviated
by a capital F.
All other countries use Celsius as their temperature scale. Celsius is part of the metric
system. We abbreviate Celsius with a capital C. When writing something informal, you
can either use the degree symbol or write out the word "degrees." When writing for
science, use the degree symbol.
Examples:
number sign ( # ) In the English language, the number sign ( # ) is also known as
a pound sign
pound key
pound
hex
octothorpe
hash (British English)
In the American English, the # symbol is read as "number" when it comes before a
number. We mostly use the number sign in informal writing, such as emails, texts,
journal entries and advertisements.
7. underscore symbol ( _ ) The underscore looks like a dash below the letters ( _ ).
The underscore sign is also called:
understrike
underbar
low line
low dash
underline
underdash
8. copyright symbol ( © ) Copyright is the legal right to be the only one to publish or
sell a book, musical recording, etc. The person with the copyright is the legal owner,
and other people cannot use the product without his or her permission.
The trademark symbol is a small "TM." ( ™ ) If you want to claim rights to a word,
name, or logo that represents a company that makes a product, use the trademark
symbol.
11. dollar sign ( $ ) The dollar sign is used to represent the dollar and peso. You
can use the dollar sign in all informal writing (journals, emails, texts, friendly
letters)
Examples:
Tom will mail you a check for $152.55 to cover the bill.
Please send $500 for your December rent payment.
