HEALTH EDUCATION

Health education builds students' knowledge, skills, and positive attitudes about

health. Health education teaches about physical, mental, emotional and social health. It

motivates students to improve and maintain their health, prevent disease, and reduce risky

behaviors.

Health education curricula and instruction help students learn skills they will use

to make healthy choices throughout their lifetime. Effective curricula result in positive

changes in behavior that lower student risks around:

Alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, injury prevention, mental and emotional

health, nutrition, physical activity, prevention of diseases and sexuality and family life.

Health education promotes learning in other subjects! One study showed that

reading and math scores of third and fourth grade students who received comprehensive

health education were significantly higher than those who did not. In general, healthy

students learn better. Numerous studies have shown that healthier students tend to do

better in school. They have higher attendance, have better grades, and perform better on

tests.

But the researchers found out that Health Education has weaknesses with regards

on teaching some of topics under it. These topics must consider first the maturity and age

of the audience or the students. Next is the sensitivity of each individual with regards to

those topics. Because of these lapses, some of the topics are not learned inside the

classroom and they will gain the knowledge from that topic thru internet without the

guidance and approach of the teachers or elders that will cause so many consequences

when they misunderstood those topics.

The proponents conduct a survey on which the respondents simply tell what are

the topics of Health Education are being teach to them and what are the topics should

give more emphasis so that they have the awareness to those topics.

The data below is the result of the survey of 100 College of Education students

answering the question whether if the University is adopting a policy stating that college

students have learned already each of the following topics inside the classroom.

As what the table shows, some of the topics are learned from school but some is

not being emphasized during the class. These are Dental and Oral Health,

Pregnancy prevention, HIV Prevention, STD Prevention, Death and Dying,

Immunizations or Vaccinations, Sun Safety or Skin Cancer Prevention. Some of

the topics have their own commonalities and that is all of them is more of

prevention of diseases and more related to sex education. These topics is

considered as sensitive topics because the number of teenagers having these cases

is increasing here now in our country. But on the other hand, some topics have

showed that they are learned inside the classroom and up until now, they can still

remember what these topics all about are. Emotional and mental health, Suicide

prevention, Tobacco use prevention, Alcohol or other drug use prevention,

Violence prevention, for example bullying, fighting, or homicide, Accident or

injury prevention, CPR, First aid, Consumer health, and Environmental health.
