1. symbol definition
The symbol comes from the word symballo which comes from Greek. Symballo
means throwing together, throwing or putting together in one idea or concept of visible
objects, so that the object represents an idea. According to William Dillistone (in
Masbied), symbols are depictions of a real or imagined object that evokes feelings or is
moved by feelings. Feelings associated with objects, with each other and with the subject.
The symbol has another function.
According to Skemp (1979: 69) symbols are sounds or things that can be seen,
mentally related to an idea. This idea is what the symbol means. Without an idea attached
to it, the symbol has no meaning. Symbols and their meanings must be accepted as a
whole. So, in general symbols are images, shapes, or objects that represent an idea, an
idea, or the amount of something. Although the symbol is not the value itself, but the
symbol is needed for the benefit of the values they represent. The symbol can be used for
any purpose. For example science, social life, also religion. The symbol form is not only
in the form of visible objects, but also through movement and speech. Symbols are also
used as one of the language infrastructures, known as symbol languages. The most
common symbol is writing, which is a symbol of words and sound.
Soedjadi (2007: 13) argues that symbols in mathematics are generally empty of
meaning so that they can be given meaning according to the scope of the universe.
Symbols in mathematics are artificial that have meaning after a meaning is given to them,
without which mathematics is only a collection of dry formulas or symbols without
meaning. In this regard, it is not uncommon to find in life, many people say that X, Y, Z
have no meaning at all. For symbols to be meaningful, we must understand the ideas
contained in these symbols. Therefore, the most important thing is that ideas must be
understood before the ideas themselves are symbolized. For example the symbols (x, y)
are pairs of symbols "x" and "y" that are still empty of meaning. If the concept is used in
analytic geometry, it can be interpreted as a point coordinate, for example A (1,2), B
(6,9), point A (1,2) point A is located at the intersection of the line x = 1 and y = 2 point B
(6, 9) means that point B lies at the intersection of the lines x = 6 and y = 9. Relationships
with symbols and then applying the concepts produced in a real situation. Therefore, in
learning especially mathematics the process of communicating good symbols by the
teacher to students becomes very important.
1. Symbols for numbers, quantities, variables or objects. Included in this category are
symbols on trigonometric functions, ranks, roots, logarithms or symbols to fund
variables.
2.Operations symbols that describe operations on numbers. Included in this category are:
addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, and symbols in a set, factorial, integral and
differential.
3.Relationship symbols that describe something are established. Symbols are equal to (=)
and inequality (<and>), ratio (ratio).
2. Symbol functions
1. Communication Equipment.
5. Explanation
A. Communication tools
Concepts are objects, pure mindset, cannot be heard and cannot be seen. Because
there is no way to directly observe a person's mind, must use tools that can be heard
or seen, such as saying a word or other sound, writing words or other signs written
on paper (the way of writing)
It must be remembered that symbols are linked to the same concepts in thoughts A
and B, then give birth to symbols. A can call concepts from memory B into its own
understanding. Once this relationship is formed, the meaning is projected to the
symbol, then the symbol and its meaning are accepted as a whole. However, it
could be that a meaning attached to a symbol by someone is different from the
meaning accepted by others even if the symbol is the same. For example the word
"braces" for English people can mean a tool to hold pants (so as not to loose) but
for Americans interpreted as {braces}.
For example: "five", "five", "cink" "5", "V", "101"All of them express the same
number, but in different symbols.
Usually when we declare a symbol, we want to draw the receiver's attention to the
idea attached to the symbol rather than the symbol itself.
First are people who don't know the things we are talking about but they want to
know. To them we must choose the symbols that are most likely to be heeded and
use them as carefully as we can in order to communicate nothing but truth.
Second are people who understand what we say in general. Here we try to
communicate some special things. If they want to be with us, we should save time
and concentration on the essential things.
Third of the listener or reader consists of people who understand what we say but
want to blame it.
An idea is not only something that cannot be seen and cannot be heard but can
also be lost. If a person dies, his knowledge will die with him unless he has
recorded it or communicated it to others.
There are three simple rules that are used to convey the desired meaning when a
symbol relates to many concepts:
a. Ensure that the scheme used is well known to the listener / speaker.
b. Make each symbol / symbol in the scheme represent only one idea.
c. Don't change the schemes without the knowledge of the listener / reader.
b. A line that starts at a certain point and extends indefinitely at another point. The
meaning that matches this word is "ray"
c. The line is finite in length, bounded by two points. The correct meaning for this
word is "line segment".
The essence of the above explanation is that a context (either explicit or implicit)
one symbol should only represent one concept.
Consider the following illustration:
The purpose of the picture above is the meaning of the concept in question, and the
stipulation that a symbol only represents one meaning.
If the new concept is a primary concept (basic). for example red, this is possible
to do without using symbols. These words are simply helping to attract attention.
Because it is a verbal word. 'Red tie', red book ',' red pencil ', red light'
simultaneously states variations and examples and constants of a concept.
Intuitively, students combine non-uniform nature with the lack of uniformity of
words, and then learn to make a name for the concept while forming it.
If a concept is a secondary concept like all mathematical concepts, then the way
to put together a series of examples that are in accordance with the mind of the
learner is to bring them entirely to the corresponding word. 'red. blue, green, yellow
’, all of which are colors.
Examples of new concepts do not always originate from past experiences. One
can imagine a 100-sided polygon without ever seeing it and not drawing it. Instead
the procurement of generalization methods in mathematics is to hold a new class,
and then try to find some of its members.
For example: we already have the concept of square roots, negative numbers,
and combine them to form a new concept of square roots of negative numbers. The
discovery of examples of this new class and examining its properties will lead to a
series of new ideas which, although they are in the form of imaginary numbers, are
used in physics, for example in the theory of alternating current and oscillator
circuits.
As we mentioned earlier we show that we are still referring to the same object by
using the symbol "=", and by renaming it according to custom we can look for traits
that were initially unclear.
Example:
E. Explanation
b) The gap between new ideas and the existing scheme is too large.
a2 = a × a
a3 = a × a × a
am × an = am + n
most likely the student will say that he does not understand and also likely they will
say "you are too fast".
In this event, it is necessary to improve the explanation phase used, so that the gap
will be resolved. Psychologically, someone who explains will say symbols that are
suitable for generating concepts related to existing schemes with new ideas.
c) Existing schemes may not be able to absorb new ideas without providing
accommodation, especially in the case of mathematical generalizations. In this
situation the function of explanation is to help students to describe the schemes they
think about, to release examples or pure ideas that have a narrowing effect and to
modify those ideas appropriately. The expansion of zero, negative and fraction
notation is an example of this case, if a new idea is presented in further
communication is needed to understand it. It seems that this method can be used in
teaching. It is not desirable to place students on something that is not in accordance
with the level they already have. This program does not offer a challenge and there
is not much variation. It is often useful to pay attention to the problem first, for
example a momentary discovery of speed and a free parachutist. Next defines
precisely the "instantaneous speed" and modification of development with the
process of describing new concepts (eg limits) needed to solve the problem.
This section includes one's awareness of a concept and scheme, paying attention
to its structure and relationships, and using it in various varied ways. The three
functions of the system are illustrated in the diagram marked "Recipient", "Thought
Intervention Process", and "Executing".
The process of one's awareness of concepts for the first time learning them seems
difficult. Even so, for people who have high reflective abilities still need a struggle
to find new ideas. To build new ideas seems to be closely related to associating its
symbols, but this seems not well known.
Concepts are difficult to understand and inaccessible, and perhaps symbols (which
are in the form of basic concepts) are for the most part the most abstract concepts
we can know clearly. Of course some knowledge processes can improve our ability
to think. After the association is formed, the symbol will act as a label that
combines it so that it can choose (from our memory) and can manipulate our
concept when desired. This will be prioritized by using symbols that we can control
with our thoughts.
One of the goals of reflection is to find out how the relationship between one idea
with another idea then combine them. However, our range of memory for
remembering information at one time is very limited. Moreover, information or
topics are more difficult, it will require more concentration and more attention, also
requires accuracy in directing faster before thinking. So someone who records one's
thoughts on paper is a progress. This form is more permanent than "thinking hard"
by reducing the tension in safeguarding information by using mathematical notation
that is with symbols.
Compare the following:
The usual notation for the logarithm of an x number on base a is (read: logarithm
with base a of x). From the logarithmic definition, which does not need our
attention here (explained in Chapter 14), if the logarithm is denoted by n,
Then x = an.
From these examples it is not expected to replace the old notation, so it will still
be expected that the selection of notations must be done very carefully, paying
attention to how effective the notation is used for an idea.
The power of mathematics is very broad and at all levels, symbols contribute
substantially in it. But without the ability of mathematicians to instill
understanding, all is of no use.
The symbol function that will be explained this time is almost the same as the
previous discussion, namely (ii) symbols to record knowledge and (vi) symbols are
also described as a combination of labels to identify and manipulate concepts. With
the help of symbols one can reformulate concepts that he has learned in the past
more easily. For example, if students are asked about a form that has reflective,
symmetrical and curved properties, then they will immediately answer 'parabolic',
rather than answer by describing the characteristics of a parabola in long sentences.
Another example is a quadratic equation. Does it have real roots? To answer that
problem, usually the first thing that comes to mind is the 'discriminant' or the b2 -
4ac symbol. Then followed by the emergence of the memory of the calculation
method about the diskriman.
Symbols in mathematics are very helpful for recalling concepts that are already
stored in our minds, because in mathematics our memory is a combination of
concept structures and related symbols.
Unfortunately not all ideas obtained in such ways can fulfill their abilities. After
understanding it should be followed by an examination of its truth. In science this
means testing ideas with experiments. In mathematics this means analyzing logic,
testing internal consistency, and receiving knowledge. Once again, a reflexive
process for symbols is essential. If the election is carefully contributed directly to
declare a new structure.

1. Definisi simbol
2. fungsi simbol
Fungsi-fungsi simbol dijelaskan sebagai berikut :
A. Alat komunikasi
kedalam pengertiannya sendiri.
seringkali salah dipahami orang.
matematika.
Misalnya : “lima”, “five”, “cink” “5”, “V” , “101”
Biasanya jika kita menyatakan suatu simbol, kita ingin minta perhatian penerima
namun mereka ingin tahu.
Diberikan simbol/kata lapangan.
pengertian saja.
a. Garis tak terbatas panjangnya, memanjang tanpa batas di kedua arah. Makna yang tepat
untuk kata ini adalah “garis”
simbol seharusnya hanya mewakili satu konsep.
sederhena membantu menarik perhatian. Karena merupakan kata verbal. ‘Dasi merah’,
contoh tentang konsep-konsep baru.
kemungkinan penyebabnya, yaitu:
a) Penggunaan skema yang salah.
a2 = a ×a
a3 = a×a×a
