TITLE: Caring for Children With Special Needs: Easing Their Lives Through
Practical Physical Therapy Programs.

PROPONENT: Sentro Kalinga Parents, Faculty and Staf

RATIONALE:
Taking care of a child could be tough. Taking care of child with special
needs, as they say, could be tougher. The special challenges are compounded for
parents and primary care-givers. Among these challenges are learning about the
disability, researching and accessing efective treatments, coping with the
emotional and physical demands of taking care of them, getting appointments and
discussing with medical providers, therapists, teachers, paying for all the
interventions, and the list goes on.

All of these things result to great stress, especially, to parents who feel and
worry about the child’s pain and sufering, what his future would be, or whether
they are giving or doing enough or doing it right to help the child. Parents and
primary care-givers of children with special needs are often exhausted and
frequently become depressed.

It is for these reasons that this seminar is proposed. Often the most
beneficial support and information parents receive is from other parents of
children with special needs. This seminar aims to educate and inform parents,
care-givers, teachers, other stakeholders a better understanding of the
importance of knowing the motor skills of an individual and how the practical
applications could actually make a change in their everyday lives.

OBJECTIVES:
1. It is to provide basic knowledge on the motor skills of a normal individual so
parents/caregivers/attendees could have a better understanding of the
disability of their child as this is one of the challenges faced by parent as
mentioned above.
2. It is to provide efective movements or functional strategies that could help
parents in coping with the physical and emotional demands of taking care
of them. Examples of which include:
2.1) Proper Body Mechanics
2.2) Relaxation Techniques

3. It is to educate and inform parents and caregivers practical physical therapy

programs to help these children gain more confidence and eventually
independence in doing activities of daily living (ADLs). Such activities
include:
3.a) Home Exercise Programs (HEP)
3.2) Pain Management Strategies
3.3) Practical Functional Activites

4. It is to help create a consistent carrying-out of instruction and information

among team players consisting of parents, care-givers, teachers, therapists
and other stakeholders.
