EXERCISE 1

1. V is a vector 14.3 units in magnitude and points at an angle of 34.8º above the
negative x axis. (a) Sketch this vector. (b) Find V x and Vy .

2. Two vectors have length V1  3.5 km and V 2  4.0 km. What are the maximum
and minimum magnitudes of their vector sum?

3. A plane heading the North at 450 km hr-1 with the wind blowing at 50 km hr-1 south-east. What it the
actual direction of the plane?

4. A ship from port A heading port B to the East which is 300 km away . It continues
its journey for 200 km to port C at bearing 60o . What is the position of C relative
to A?

5. A car is driven 215 km west and then 85 km southwest. What is the displacement of
the car from the point of origin (magnitude and direction)? Draw the vector
diagram.

6. A 1 kg body is acted upon by forces F1 = (3.0N)i + (4.0N)j and F2 = (-2.0N)i + (-

6.0N)j. What is the net force Fnet?

7. A 100 N force, directed at an angle  above a horizontal floor, is applied to a 25.0

kg box sitting on the floor. Calculate
(a). the horizontal component Fh of the applied force and
(b). the total normal force FN that acts vertically on the floor
for cases  = 0,  = 30.0o and  = 60.0o

8. What single force is the equivalent of the two forces 15N at 10° above the positive
x-axis and 25N at 40° below the positive x-axis?

9. A plane flies from base camp to lake A, a distance of 280 km at a direction of 20.0°
north of east. After dropping off supplies, the plane flies to lake B, which is 190 km
and 30.0° west of north from lake A. Determine the distance and direction from lake
B to the base camp.

10. While exploring a cave, an explorer starts at the entrance and moves the following
distances: 75.0 m north, 250 m east, 125 m at an angle 30.0° north of east, and 150
m south. Find the resultant displacement from the cave entrance.

11. A commuter airplane starts from an airport first flies to city A, located 175 km away
in a direction 30.0° north of east. Next, it flies for 150 km 20.0° west of north, to
city B. Finally, the plane flies 190 km due west, to city C. Find the location of city
C relative to the location of the starting point.

12. An airplane starting from airport A flies 300 km east, then 350 km at 30.0° west of
north, and then 150 km north to arrive finally at airport B. (a) The next day, another
plane flies directly from A to B in a straight line. In what direction should the pilot

travel in this direct flight? (b) How far will the pilot travel in the flight? Assume
there is no wind during either flight.

13. A hiker begins a trip by first walking 2.5km southeast where she sets up her tent for
the night. On the second day she walks 4.0 km in a direction 60 o north of each at
which point she discovers a tower. What is the position of the tower from her
starting point.

14. You are driving from Kota Bharu to Kuantan in the direction of 65o South of East at
a distance of 250km for 3 hours. After resting for 1 hour, you continue driving in
the direction of 30o South of West heading for Kuala Lumpur 180km away for 1.5
hours. Calculate your average speed.

15. Two ships leaves simultaneously from a port. The first ship is heading North at 30
km h-1 and the second to the East at 45 km h-1. What is the position of the second
ship with respect to the first 3 hours later?

16. The distance between two jetties in 2km. The journey upstream takes 40 minutes
and downstream takes 32 minutes. What is the speed of the water?

17. A man can row his boat in still water at 1.2 ms-1. (a) If he wants to cross directly on
the other side of a river flowing downstream at 0.5 ms-1 what will be his speed and
direction. (b) If the river is 300m wide, calculate the time taken.

18. Use a graph paper for this question.

During an experiment on linear motion, the following data is obtained.

a. Which of these variables is an independent variable.

b. Construct a graph of this data. Properly label your axes
c. Determine the slope of the graph. What does this slope represents.
d. Write an equation for this graph.
