PROCEDURE NO:1
1.1 Purpose:
,
Trees growing as the stone masonry wall have (or will
eventually) resulted in displacement (or cracking) of
stone masonry and over the long term will impact the I \
integrity and functionality of the bridge.
t'
Tress growing from or within (or having root system
within)the stone masonry wall (abutment or pier or .rI a!
ilJ
wing wall) are therefore required to be removed.
a) Step-l: Follow the guidelines for safety, quality assurance, environmental protection, product
delivery, personnel, supervision, storage and handling, etc
b) Step-2: Cut Vegetotion: Cut away or trim vegetation that can be easily removed from, and
around, including trees, shrubs etc. Vegetation should be disposed from site and should not
obstruct width of the right-of-way or waterways.
c) Step-3: The main tree/ivy stems should be cut at the base of the root. This effectively cuts off
the water supply. A hand saw is appropriate for cutting trees.
lf the root is small, it should then be painted or sprayed immediately after cutting with the
chosen herbicide. lf the roots are of reasonable size, upto 200mm in diameter, drill a hole into
the stump 80mm long and fill with the herbicide solution, then plug. lf the root is wider than
200mm, a series of holes can be drilled into stump, making sure the holes are atleast 30mm in
from the cambium (the formative layer of cellular tissue that lies between the young wood
and the outer surface).
The herbicide solution should then be poured in and the holes plugged. Once the main root
has been cut, secondary roots may attempt to burrow invasively into the weaker areas of wall
fabric to access moisture naturally present in the walls. lmmediate spraying will prevent this
damage occurring.
d) Step-4: Spray herbicides: Trimmed face should then be sprayed immediately with an
appropriate herbicide. Tree/lvy roots and shoots can seal themselves within an hour once
damaged, and so must be sprayed as soon as possible.
ge
S.C.G Consultoncy Services (lnspection, Repairs & Rehabilitotion Division) SCG tD : PWD-05 L/KOP-0j/KOP-03
e) Step-S: The vegetation should then be left to die away naturally. lt can take up two years it
has decayed sufficiently to ensure safe removal. The state of the vegetation should be
periodically checked as it may require a second treatment during this time, and perhaps again
a few weeks prior to removal.
f) Step-6: The plant must never be removed from masonry while still alive. Once the stems have
died, they should be removed with the utmost care by hand, not with a rope or any other
means, in order to avoid damage to the masonry or possible collapse of masonry. lf there are
areas of loose masonry, then remove affected masonry carefully, remove roots, clean the
joints of dust etc. and reset the stones.
g) Step-7:Herbicide: Products suitable for vegetation removal on and around masonry will
contain the active ingredients either glyphosate or triclopyr.
Glyphosote is non-selective; therefore it will target all vegetation with which it is in contact
Triclopyrcontrols woody and broadleafed species (such as ivy).

PROCEDURE NO:2
2.1 Purpose:
To remove weak, cracked, loose, honeycomb or carbonated concrete over an area from its
surface with pneumatically operated or power driven tools by chiseling, chipping etc. The rusted
steel if required to be removed shall be cut by chisel or gas under strict control and supervision.
Power pneumatically driven chisel, chipping tools, gas cutting tools, complete with
or
accessories, hand tools like chisel, hammer, pH indicator (O.2% phenolphthalein solution) with pH
range at least up to 10.5, and clinical injection syringe.
a) Step-l: Prop ond support to relieve the structural member of stress and strains (Procedure
No.1).
b) Step-2: Providing and fixing working plotform and access (Scaffolding System) for beam and
slab shall be erected suitably.
d) Step-4: Mork off the area to be repaired using straight lines between corners. The marked area
shall have 90" corners with the sides parallel or normal to the direction of the reinforcement.
The marked boundaries for the repair area should be a minimum of 50mm outside the
perimeter of the spall. For a single spall, the repair area should have a minimum width of
L00mm in any direction. lf a number of spalls are closely located to each other, these spalls
should be included in a single area marked for repair.
e) Step-S: Cut shall be mode olong the morked boundory, normal to the surface. lt should be made
with a diamond cutter blade. However, when diamond cutting is not practical, the normal cut
can be made with a power driven chisel. Minimum depth of cut shall be 10mm. in situations
where the diamond saw could cut into reinforcement steel due to inadequate concrete cover,
the boundary edge should be formed manually by means of chisel and impact hammers.
f) Step-6: Chipping to remove oll the unsound, honeycomb and weak concrete material shall be
done carefully from the damaged portions of structural members by adopting mechanical or
manual means up to the required depth to produce sound concrete surface to near uniform
depth for the repair area.
Tolerance: The chipping tolerance shall be +5mm

Chiseling by hond tool - work is typically applicable for concrete removal for smaller, moderate
and areas of limited access. Removal should begin at the interior of the repair area and progress
toward the boundaries, using suitable hammer.
Power Driven Chisel/Hammers are normally applicable for chiseling smaller thicknesses upto
about 50 mm.
Pneumatic Hommers are normally applicable for chiseling large thicknesses in excess of 50 mm.
Mechanicol Milling (single drum, rotary cutter head with Tungsten carbide bits) is applicable for
large areas where the concrete cover is to be removed. Care must be taken to avoid contact
with the reinforcing steel as both the reinforcement and the cutter drum could be damaged.
Rounded ond Feothered Edges should be hand cut to form normalto the surface boundaries. All
the edges and cavities shall be square shouldered.
g) Step-7: Test for corbonation shall be carried out at embedded or exposed reinforcement
locations, by spraying phenolphthalein indicator on concrete in contact and in the immediate
vicinity of reinforcement soon after its chipping. As otherwise, chipped concrete surface in
contact with air is likely to get carbonated soon after its coming in contact with atmospheric
carbon dioxide.
h) Step-8: A full depth chiseling and removol of concrete all round reinforcement shall be carried
out, in case the concrete in contact and in immediate vicinity of the reinforcement is
carbonated.
i) Step-9: lnspection and soundness testing, after concrete removal and cleaning, for weakness
and delamination of exposed surfaces shall be visually carried out. lf required, additional
removalwill be done.
,) Step-10: Cleoning of debris and dust shall be carried outfrom within the chiseled/chipped area
and its disposal as per direction of the Engineer-in-charge.
2.4 Measurements:
The dimensions of the area chipped off for RCC slabs shall be measured separately. The average
thickness shall be determined by taking an average of five thickness readings recorded with one
reading each at corner and at the point of intersection of wires stretched diagonally from corner
points of the rectangular area chipped. The extra/less thickness than specified for slabs shall be
recorded in millimeters. Corresponding areas of slab shall be separately worked out in square
meter correct to second place of decimal.
2.5 Rates:
The rates shall cover cost of all materials, labour and T&P involved in all the operations
described
above except those involved in steps L, 2 and l.
