Introduction

With the world population continuing on a steady rise, considerable effort and innovation are

needed to sustainably enhance food production, decrease food waste and losses and ensure those

suffering from malnutrition and hunger have access to food. Various organizations have

undertaken various steps to address the problem of hunger with various degrees of success but

official reports indicate that persons affected by hunger have increased over the past three years.

The study will identify and explore modern techniques and approaches to ending hunger. The

main objective of this study will be to examine whether the current policies in place are

effective. It will also identify the group of people who are suffering from hunger, the root causes

of hunger and how to end world hunger.

1.0 Background

Ending world hunger has been a global agenda for close to five decades. With reports indicating

that cases of populations afflicted by hunger are on the rise, it is imperative that long lasting

solutions are found once and for all. Findings by the United Nations indicates that food wastage,

poor harvesting and wars among other factors have contributed to food scarcity(Goal 2: Zero

Hunger 2).This study seeks to find out the root causes of hunger and the group of people who are

suffering from hunger. The researcher contends that modern techniques and approaches can be

applied to end world hunger.

1.1 Problem Definition

After decades of trying to fight hunger, hunger is on the rise with sub-Saharan Africa and south

Asia being the most affected. A radical change is needed in the global agricultural and food

systems if the 815 million persons facing hunger are to be fed. Official estimates indicate that the

world needs an estimated $267 billion every year in order to eradicate world hunger by the year
2030 (United Nations Statistics Division). A world without hunger can have positive effects on

social development, economies, equality and health. Given the nature of the problem, this study

will attempt to find solutions to ending world hunger.

1.2 Problem Statement

This research effort is relevant in current times because according to official reports the number

of hungry persons across the world continues to grow reaching approximately 815 million in

2017. Among the world’s hungry people, 10 % experience acute food shortages. The other 90%

endure chronic hunger -a nagging a hunger that does not end. Limited progress is also being

witnessed in addressing various forms of malnutrition, which range from stunted growth in

children to adult obesity. The report further indicates that hunger has been increasing over the

last three years reaching levels last observed three decades ago. The situation seems to be

worsening in Sothern Asia and several regions in Africa (Goal 2: Zero Hunger 2). These adverse

developments inform policymakers and relevant authority that more needs to be done if the

world is to end hunger by the year 2030.

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this study is to find long-lasting solutions to the problem of ending hunger

around the world. This will involve an in-depth analysis of the region most affected to

investigate the factors that lead to food access disparities and hunger by the use of precise

calculations and statistical analysis. Further, various studies on the problem of ending hunger

have not covered the issue comprehensively, therefore, this study will contribute to the existing

knowledge by introducing modern techniques and approaches. The study will also help in

increasing global awareness about the need to end this scourge by encouraging everyone to

participate through various efforts. This will be in line with the main goal of ending hunger,
achieving food security and nutrition and promoting sustainable agriculture (Goal 2: End Hunger

1). The findings from this study will help in policy formulation by the relevant authority.

1.4 Research Questions

The study will attempt to answer the following research questions.

1) Who are the group of people suffering from hunger

2) What are the root causes of hunger

3) How to end world hunger

Ending world hunger is one of the major priorities of the United Nations. Alarming reports about

the increasing incidents of hunger sends a clear message that there is still a lot to be done in

order to end world hunger. Whereas there are various anti-hunger programs initiatives that have

been started this study will examine whether the current policies are effective. Consequently, the

study will focus on exploring the root causes of hunger and how to end world hunger.

1.5 Significance of the Study

In 1974, governments meeting in Rome for the World Food conference summit proclaimed that

everyone had the inalienable right to live without facing and malnutrition so that they can

develop their mental and physical faculties. Currently, 5 billion of the world’s 6.8 billion

population are living in poverty, which deprives the capacity to acquire basic needs (Powledge

5). As a result, the conference set a goal to eradicate hunger, malnutrition and food insecurity

within a decade. For various reasons including lack of funding and poor policymaking, that

objective has not been met four decades later. The overall significance of this study is to explore

long lasting solutions to ending world hunger. This study could serve as a platform to raise

global awareness as many persons remain ignorant to the plight of millions suffering due to lack

of food. It is important to note that at the global level, ending world hunger will benefit the
global economy as currently many resources are directed at combating the issue. These funds

will be directed at addressing other equally important social issues. This research will also

introduce modern techniques and approaches to tackling world hunger.
