 Lack of emergency/disaster preparedness- Community
 Staff preparedness for emergencies- Impatient

 OBJECTIVE #1: Synthesize the role of the Advanced Practice Nurse in providing culturally responsive care to diverse
clients in the long-term acute care hospital.
 OBJECTIVE #2: Compare emergency operation protocols at the long-term acute care hospital with best practice
recommendations from National Response Framework.
 OBJECTIVE #3: Investigate community resources for elderly patients diagnosed with chronic diseases.
 OBJECTIVE #4: Develop an educational pamphlet to increase family and patient awareness of disaster/emergency
preparedness with regards to their chronic disease.
 OBJECTIVE #5: Implement a nursing staff campaign in the long-term acute care hospital focused on early awareness,

Objective #1: Reviewed pre-screens to determine if patients where appropriate for
admission to the facility
Objective #2: Participated in a four-day training course in healthcare emergency
management
Objective #3: Collaborate with Case Management about equipment needed for a
patient going home to be cared for by their family
Objective #4: Obtain a FEMA produced emergency pamphlet from Limestone County
EMA
Objective #5: Participated in tornado awareness training
Objective #6: Assessed the current protocols for emergency/disaster response in the
long-term acute care hospital.
Objective#7: Assessed new admits and reviewed admission orders with CRNP, to
ensure medical treatment was appropriate for the patients

 Beliefs they did not need to prepare due to there was “no need to” or it is too
“overwhelming”

 Visit the sites beforehand, this author felt confident her adjustment of teaching
style was successful
 Started earlier to obtain free items to give away to the seniors when presenting
the material, this author underestimated the time to obtain free items

 Adjust method of educational training, as needed
 Have close relationships with vendors to obtain free items
 Help plan a field trip to a retail store to obtain items needed for an emergency

 Plan with the activities director a day set aside to help seniors develop a plan to
evacuate when needed
