Jazmine Brown Date: 9/9/2019-9/10/2019

Area: Feeds & Nutrition
Job: Pearson Square
Situation: This is the third lesson after taking over the Feeds & Nutrition class. The class before we used OSU
Cowculator to balance rations with three or more ingredients. We are now working on Pearson Squares and how
formulating by hand is different than using a computer program. This lesson will be done over two days- the first day
going through steps on how to do a Pearson Square & practicing them, and the second creating their own feed
company & balancing the actual ration.

Targets/Questions/Objectives:
Balance a ration using Pearson Square
Identify Requirements for a Feed Tag
Materials Needed:
Computer
PowerPoint
Pearson Square Practice Problems
Feed Company Worksheet
Materials for ration formulation- two types of cereals, M&Ms, peanuts, etc.
Hook:
- Before class: Label all the “feed” options as Feed 1 with the possible CP%, Feed 2 with the possible CP%, and
the mineral/vitamin premix. Tell students the mineral/vitamin premix should make up 5% of the diet.
- Handout Pearson Square math sheet: Tell students they are going to be creating one of the rations from #2 or
#3. Have them read through the two and choose one, making a note of it on their worksheet.
- Once students know which diet they chose, have them make a “guesstimation” ration to try and make the
right CP%.
- Tell students they can start eating their diet after they come show me & I take a picture. (5 Minutes)
Plan of Action (Time included):
Day one:
- Re-cap what we did last class with OSU Cowculator and how that helped us make rations. Talk about how
using a Pearson Square is different. Talk about how the Pearson Square is used in real-life (formulate sausage,
ground beef, hot dog batches, etc.) Go over the objectives for the day. (5 Minutes)
- Go through the Pearson Square notes. Have at least one student write the problem on a separate board while
we go through the steps in the PowerPoint. Print out copies of the PowerPoint so they can use it as a step-by-
step guide on how to solve a Pearson Square (30 Minutes)
- Pass out Pearson Square Practice Problems and give students a chance to complete them. Pause after almost
every student has completed the first practice problem and go through it on the board together. (40 Minutes)
- Take a Brain Break half-way through Pearson Square Practice (10 Minutes)
Day two:
- Start class by going over the right answers for the Pearson Square problems. If students are still struggling
with understanding Pearson squares, do another problem on the board as a group. (15 Minutes)
- Review the requirements for a feed tag label that we discussed during the specialty feeds lesson (5 Minutes)
- Pass out Student Feed Company assignment and go over the expectations of the Feed Tag Label. Give
students time to create their feed companies tag for the feed they chose yesterday & did the Pearson square
CP% on. (30 Minutes- Check-in and assess if more time is needed)
- Once the feed tags are complete, have students start by calculating the number of grams they will need for
each of the feed ingredients & confirm with you before moving on. (10 Minutes)
- Check in with students to confirm they know how to use/zero the scales. Have students measure out their
diet and put it in a Ziploc bag. (15 Minutes)
- Before class make a PowerPoint with pictures of each students ration
Assessment Plan – What did students learn? How do you know?
- To assess student learning I will collect their Pearson Square math sheets and check for correct answers.
Additionally, I will collect their Feed Tag they create and check that all required parts of a feed tag are
included.
