Referee Hand Signals
STANDARDS
Content: The learner demonstrates understanding of lifestyle and weight management to
promote community fitness.

Performance: The learner maintains an active lifestyle to influence the physical activity
participation of the community and practices healthy eating habits that support an active
lifestyle.

INSTRUCTIONAL SEQUENCE
SMART Objectives
1. Performs physical activities and physical fitness assessments
2. Identifies the different qualities of a good officiating official.
3. Gives value to the correct practice of officiating officials in facilitating safe and fair
games.
4. Performs the different referee hand signals during practice or actual games.

Procedure:
Priming:
Watch a video clip about the proper role of a referee in a basketball game.
What usually happens when a referee fails to call out correct and fair judgment in a game?
Is it possible to have a very physical game to have an organized and safe flow?
Do you think you could be a referee in a game? What were your qualities that would be
useful in being a referee?

Abstraction
What do you think are the qualities of a person that could make him a good referee?
Let the class watch the video clips about referee hand signals for:
o Basketball
o Volleyball
o Soccer (football)
What have you noticed in their way of delivering hand signals?

Analysis
o Complete the fishbone diagram:

Application
Divide the class into 4 groups and let them perform synchronized referee hand signals.
The teacher or leader of the group will be flashing cards with a corresponding referee hand signal and
they will perform the hand signals as the whistle sounds.

STANDARDS

lifestyle.

LEARNING COMPETENCY/IES
The Learner:
• Assesses eating habits based on the Philippine Food Pyramid/ My Food Plate.
• Determines risk factor (obesity, physical inability, poor nutrition, smoking) for major non-
communicable diseases lifestyle related (e.g. Diabetes, heart diseases, stroke, cancer).
• Distinguishes among facts, myths and misinformation associated with eating habits.

INSTRUCTIONAL SEQUENCE
SMART Objectives
1. Performs physical activities and physical fitness assessments
2. Appreciates the importance of monitoring health and fitness levels
3. Identifies the different factors affecting nutrition and weight management.
4. Sets and plans weight management by logging daily dietary habits on a notebook
and take positive action towards ideal weight based on the self-assessment of daily
dietary habits.

Procedure:
Priming:
Do your preliminary activities:
o Obtain heart rate at rest.
o 10-15 minute warm-up exercises (static and dynamic stretching exercises).
o Obtain heart rate after the warm-up activity.

Group yourselves according to BMI classification:


o Group 1 - Underweight
o Group 2 - Normal
o Group 3 - Overweight/Obese
You are going to have a game. It’s called modified obstacle relay. You will be provided with
an obstacle course with specific stations indicating the task to accomplish. All are related to
sports officiating (e. g. basketball). Blow your whistle first before executing the needed
signal or skill.
Refer to the illustration regarding the challenges you have to pass through in the
obstacle course as your guide.
The first team to finish wins.
Abstraction
Assemble in columns per group and discuss among group members the following
questions:
What went well? What went wrong?
How does body weight influence one’s physical activity like in the one you just did?
What suggestions can you give to perform better next time, and in other physical
activities at hand?

Analysis
Read pages 10-13 of the Learner’s Material and answer the following on your notebook:
1. How does a person gain weight the healthy way?
2. What is a calorie?
3. How do we determine how much calorie our body needs?

Application
The Daily Dietary Habit Log
Start logging your daily food consumption. You can do this by listing down the foods you eat on
a daily basis each meal for the day. Use the following example as a guide:

Basic First Aid

participation of the community and practices healthy eating habits that support an active
lifestyle.

LEARNING COMPETENCY/IES
The Learner:
1. Undertakes physical activity and physical fitness assessments.
2. Monitors periodically one's progress towards the fitness goals.
3. Performs appropriate first aid for injuries and emergency situations in physical activity and
sports settings ( e.g. Cramps, sprain, heat exhaustion)

INSTRUCTIONAL SEQUENCE

1. Performs physical activities and physical fitness assessments

3. Perform basic first aid for injuries and emergency situations using simulated
activities (and be able to apply them in real-life situations-when necessary)
4. Give emphasis on safety precautions when performing physical activities to prevent
injuries and perform preliminary activities before engaging in physical activities for
the prevention of injuries.

Procedure:

Priming: Part I. The PAR-Q (Physical Activity Readiness-Questionnaire) Activity”


(Assess the class’ PAR-Q before physical activities)

- Afterwards proceed with helping them determine their fitness goals and
explain why they need a fitness goal and its importance
- Review on how to get their THR (Target Heart Rate) for Moderate and
Vigorous Physical Activity – Discuss/Explain further, if necessary, why
they need to monitor their HR before and after physical activities and
how vital it is with monitoring THR.
- Let the students check their pulse at rest.

with your THR for moderate and vigorous activities? What are the results?

2. What would it take you to reach your THR?
3. How do you plan to reach your THR? Do you think it is healthy for you? Why

1. How do you see your role as a student in keeping your fellow classmates
safe?
2. How does it feel when you were able to help people in times of need such as
injuries and emergencies?
3. Why do we need basic first aid knowledge? Do you see yourself applying first
aid treatment to an injured person? How well do you think you would do?
What can you do to perform better first aid treatments? How do you plan to do
it?
4. Discuss the basic first aid treatments for specific injuries.
