1.2 GAS-TURBrnE ENGINE TEST

Before assembly into the packaged set, every Centaur gas-turbine engine is subjected
to a run-in and performance acceptance test. For this test, the engine power is
, absorbed by a high-speed dynamometer, enabling all aspects of engine performance
to be measured. Operation at incremental loads up to full speed and power ensures
ftmctional and structural integrity. Details of engine performance acceptance test-
ing are described in Specification ES 1546. Natural Gas Fuel Spec, ES 1211, and
Lubricating OilSpec, ES 9-224, were adhered to during the engine test.

1.3 DRIVEN EQUIPMENT TEST

Basic testing of the gearbox and the pump is conducted by the respective manufacturer
of each unit. Solar conducted no additional test on the gearboxes.

1.4 PACKAGE ACCEPTANCE TEST

After satisfactory completion of the performance acceptance tests for the gas-turbine
engine, the engine is installed in the Mechanical Drive Set in preparation for the
package acceptance tests. These tests specify procedures and requirements to be
met for the hydrauliC, pneumatic, and electrical systems supplied with the Centaur
Mechanical Drive Set. During the acceptance tests, the engine safety shutdown
system is tested under actual operating conditions by introducing, or simulating,
the various saiety shutdowns. After completion of the acceptance tests, the package
is prepared for shipment to the customer. Details of the package testing are des-
cribed in the package acceptance test specification, ES 1546. ES 1211 and ES 9-224
were adhered to during the test.

411 The compressor pressure ratio is computed from the measured

compressor discharge pressure and the inlet pressure.

• Compressor temperature rise is calculated from measured values

and used with the compressor pressure ratio and the calculated
power output to compute the thermodynamic characteristics of the
engine.

I) The specific fuel consumption (SFC) is computed, relating calculated

fuel flow, fuel heating value, and measured power output.

• Engine test performance is compared with specified performance •

• 2.2 RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

During the performance acceptance test, the engine is operated to design conditions
by increasing the load Wltil a specified speed is reached. At this speed, the engine
must produce the minimum specified power commensurate with a turbine inlet gas
temperature at or below the level at which the engine is allowed to operate for
continuous duty service.

Figure 1 shows engine performance acceptance test results. Performance criteria

for the T-4002 Centaur engine are also shown in this table. Performance parameters
are compared with the required standard, having been corrected to standard conditions,
as shown. The results presented have been compiled from the engine-performance
computer-analysis sheet, shown in figure 2. Data used in the computer analyses were
taken from test cell logs, after engineering evaluation to eliminate inconsistent read-
ings or improperly recorded data.

Items indicated out of tolerance (D) figure 1 were rejected and placed on a Withholding
Notice per Solar Quality Standard Procedure. Withholding Notice was processed
through Solar Material Review Board. Mter due consideration and evaluation items
were accepted.

SECTION 2

GAS-TURBINE ENGINE PERFORMANCE ACCEPTANCE TEST SUMMARY

Before assembly into a Centaur Mechanical Drive Package, each Centaur gas-turbine
engine is subjected to dynamometer testing in one of Solar's test cells. The test
cell contains the necessary equipment and instrumentation to determine the engine's
mechanical and aerodynamic performance at different speeds and loads.

2.1 METHOD AND PROCEDURE

2.1.1 Instrwnentation

All instrwnentation used in the test cell is calibrated per QCI 4.5 at regular inter-
vals. Airflow measuring equipment conforms to the requirements of ASME Power
Test Code, PTC 10.

2. 1.2 Engine Operating Conditions

The applicable sections of Test Specification ES 1546 cover the full operating range
of the engine, and the significant parameters called out are recorded. Acceptable
ranges for these measurements are stated in the specification so that any performance
irregularities can be detected.

2. 1.3 Analytical Procedure

Recorded data from the engine test run are analyzed by computer.

The computer analySiS is generally conducted in the following manner:

• Engine airflow is computed from the ambient pressure,

the pressure differential measured across the air intake
venturi, and the venturi diameter, in accordance with the
ASME flow measurement code.
lIP The fuel flow is computed from relationships involving fuel inlet
pressure, air Ifuel density ratio, and flow meter reading.
• The power output (shp) is calculated from the dynamometer-
measured load and speed.

3
SD 4400

• The compressor pressure ratio is computed from the measured

compressor discharge pressure and the inlet pressure.

• . Compressor temper ature rise is calculated from measured values

and used with the compressor pressure ratio and the calculated
power output to compute the thermodynamic characteristics of the
engine .

., The specific fuel consumption (SFC) is computed, relating calculated

fuel flow, fuel heating value, and measured power output.

• Engine test performance is compared with specified performance.

2.2 RESUL TS AND DISCUSSION

During the performance acceptance test, the engine is operated to design conditions
by increasing the load tmtil a specifIed speed is reached.

Items .indicated out of tolerance (D) figure 1 were rejected and placed on a Withholding
Notice per Solar Quality Standard Procedure. Withholding Notice was processed
through Solar Material Review Board. Mter due consideration and evaluation items
were accepted.

1.2 GAS-TURBINE ENGlliE TEST

Before assembly into the packaged set, every Centaur gas-tw-bine engine is subjected
, to a run-in and performance acceptance test. For fuis test, the engine power is
abs'Orbed by a high-speed dynamometer, enabling all aspects of engine performance
to be measured. Operation at incremental loads up to full speed and power ensures
functional and structural integrity. Details of engine" performance acceptance test-
ing are described in Specification ES 1546. Natural Gas Fuel Spec, ES 1211, and
Lubricating Oil Spec, ES 9-224, were adhered to during the engine test.

1.3 DRIVEN EQUIPMENT TEST

Basic testing of the gearbox and the pwnp is conducted by the respective manufacturer
of each unit.

During the acceptance tests, the engine safety shutdown
system is tested t.mder actual operating condItions by introducing or sim:ulatirlg,
the various safety shutdowns. After completion of the acceptance tests, the package
is prepared for shipment to the customer. Details of the package testing are des-
cribed in the package acceptance test specification, ES 1546. ES 1211 and ES 9-224
were adhered to during the test.

I 2.1 METHOD AND PROCEDURE

2.1.1 Instrumentation

All instrumentation used in the test cell is calibrated per QCI 4.5 at regular inter-
vals. Airflow measuring equipment conforms to the requirements of ASME Power
Test Code, PTe 10.

2.1.2 Engine Operating Conditions'

The applicable sections of Test Specification ES 1546 cover the full operating range
of the engine, and the Significant parameters called out are recorded. Acceptable
ranges for these measurements are stated in the specification so that any performance
irregularities can be detected.

2.1.3 Analytical ·Procedure

Recorded data from the engine test run are analyzed by computer.

The computer analysis is generally conducted in the following manner:

• Engine airflow is computed from the ambient pressure,

the pressure differential measured across the air intake
venturi, and the venturi diameter, in accordance with the
ASME flow meas urement code.

• The fuel flow is computed from relationships involving fuel inlet

pressure, air/fuel density ratiO, and flow meter reading.

.. The power output (shp) is calculated from the dynamometer-

measured load and speed.

It The compressor pressure ratio is computed from the measured

compressor discharge pressure and the inlet pressure.

• Compressor temperature rise is calculated from measured values

and used with the compressor pressure ratio and the calculated
power output to compute the thermodynamic characteristics of the
engine.

.. The specific fuel consumption (SFq) is computed, relating calculated

fuel flow, fuel heating value, and measured power output.

Engine test performance is compared with specified performance.

2.2 RESULTS AND DJSCUSSION

During the performance acceptance test, the engine is operated to design conditions
by increasing the load until a specified speed is reached. At this speed, the engine
must produce the minimum spec:ified· power commensurate with a turbine inlet gas
temperature at or below the level at which the engine is allowed to operate for
continuous duty service.

Figure 1 shows engine performance acceptance test results. Performance criteria

for the T-4002 Centaur engine are also shown in this table. Performance para-
meters. are compared with the required standard, having been corrected to standard
conditions, as shown. The results presented have been compiled from the engine-
performance computer-analysis sheet, shown in figure 2. Data used in the com-
puter analyses were taken from test cell logs, after engineering evaluation to eliminate
inconsistent readings or improperly recorded data.

Items indicated out of tolerance (D) figure 1 were rejected and placed on a Withholding
Notice per Solar Quality Standard Procedure. Withholding Notice was processed
through Solar Material Review Board. After due consideration and evaluation items
were accepted.

PACKAGE ACCEPTANCE TEST RESULTS

Since major parts· of each package were satisfactorily tested as individual components,
acceptance testing is designed as a final check to ensure the integrity of the package
systems and provide the customer an operational-ready !.mit.

3. 1 METHOD AND PROCEDURE

3. 1. 1 Instrumentation

Solar QCI 4.5 prescribes the periodic calibration schedule used to calibrate and
certify accurate the instruments used during testing.

3. 1. 2 Acceptance Performance Test

The acceptance tests were conducted in accordance with Specification ES 1546. The
following paragraphs form a brief outline of the acceptance specification.

Electrical Check

This checkout was completed by manually Simulating sensing device actuations by

closing various switches installed in series or parallel with the driven devices. Thus,
the modes of operation, malfunction protection and circuit integrity were demonstrated
• in accordance with the test agenda.

Prestart Check

A mechanical check of the packages was conducted, including prestart flushing of the
lubrication and seal oil lines, calibration of instruments and controls, and actual
operation of the startup sequence to the point of starting the engine.

Operational Check

The package was tested up to full engine speed to detect any system leakage, check
overall vibration levels, and verify satisfactory subsystem operation and functional
integrity. Figure 3 attests to the performance of these test operations.
