Chapter 2

Methodology

This chapter includes the review of related literature and studies which the

researchers have perused to shed light on the topic of the study

Foreign Literature
Atli Anarson, PhD (2018) in his article “6 Science-Based Health Benefits of

Malunggay (Moringa oleifera),” discussed that Malunggay (Moringa oleifera) is a

plant that has been praised for its health benefits for thousands of years. It is very

rich in healthy antioxidants and bioactive plant compounds. In the fourth paragraph

of his article, it is written there that Malunggay may reduce inflammation.

Inflammation is the body’s natural response to infection or injury but if it continues

over a long period of time can be linked to many chronic health problems,

including heart disease and cancer. Scientists believe that the isotiocyanates that

are found in Malunggay leaves, pods, and stems can be used as an anti-

inflammatory compound. In summary, Malunggay has been shown and

scientifically proven to have anti-inflammatory properties.

This literature is closely related to the current study, for it directly mentions

the anti-inflammatory effects of Malunggay. The present study, like the article,
aims to put the benefits of Malunggay to use for people who suffer health

complications.

Local Literature
Jan Alwyn Batara in his article “What are the benefits of Malunggay for

your family?”, states that Malunggay pods and seeds have been found to have anti-

inflammatory properties. This also means that eating more Malunggay can help

your body better protect itself against illness or injury. In this article, it is also

revealed that Malunggay grows almost everywhere in the country but, surprisingly,

not a lot of people are aware of the health benefits of Malunggay.

This is similar to the present study because it discussed that Malunggay is

common in the country, which proves that’s it available anywhere and also very

beneficial to us. The fact that not a lot of people are aware of the health benefits of

Malunggay makes it even more important to create products that promotes the use

of this very common plant.

Foreign Studies

PMC (2016) conducted a study about the wound healing properties of ethyl

acetate fraction of Malunggay in normal human dermal fibroblasts. The research

results indicated that EtOAc fraction of Malunggay leaves was effective in

promoting and accelerating wound closure process in HDF-N cells. This natural
agent is rich target for development as alternative therapeutic wound healing agent,

though, there is a need for scientific validation and safety evaluation before this

plant could be commercialized for alternative wound treatment.

This is similar to the present study because it both discussed the

scientifically proven benefits that humans get from Moringo oleifera.

Local Studies

Ramon S. Del Fierro and Fiscalina A. Nolasco (2013) validated that

Malunggay has been known to have healing properties even to traditional healers

in Southwest, Cebu. In these parts, it is said that the traditional healers use

Malunggay to treat small cuts, wounds and also swelling.

Their study was relevant to the present research because it proves that

Maluggay is known to treat small cuts, wounds even to rural areas. However their

research dealt mostly if the medical treatment traditional healers give to the people

in their community is actually scientifically proven to treat those health issues.

While this study concerns more to the anti-inflammatory effect of Malunggay.
